Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Folk-Tales: From Exclusively Slavonic Sources Beginning with his native tongue, the Bohemian language, he passes on to the closely-allied Moravian and Hungarian Slovenish (slovak) dialects, and then takes the Upper and Lower Lusatian, the former of which is related to the old Bohemian, while the latter inclines rather to the Polish language. He next goes on to the Kashubian, a rapidly perishing sub-dialect of Polish, and then to the Polish tongue itself. Next comes the White Russian, forming a transition from Polish to Great Russian, whereas the Little Russian in Galicia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.D. Kokoszka grew up in Texas with a Jewish mother and a Polish-American father. While he was aware of roots going back to Eastern Europe from both families, he found it hard to learn very much about them. He knew that Polish people would whack one another with palm leaves around Easter, and he knew that his great-grandmother purportedly believed in forest spirits known as borowy. However, it wasn't until he was in his teens that he became vaguely aware of an ancient people known as the Slavs who gave rise to the Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Slovakian, Slovene, and Czech languages. It quickly became clear to him that this was a family of cultures currently under-represented in popular culture, and even in western scholarship. Not simply a regurgitation of scholarship from the Soviet period - and presenting new analyses by using previously neglected resources - Bogowie: A Study of Eastern Europe's Ancient Gods offers one of the most painstaking scholarly reconstructions of Slavic paganism. These new resources include not only an overview of folklore from many different Slavic countries but also comparisons with Ossetian culture and Mordvin culture, as well as a series of Slavic folktales that Kokoszka analyzes in depth, often making the case that the narratives involved are mythological and shockingly ancient. Readers will recognize many European folktale types and possibly learn to look at these folktales differently after reading this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bridge to the Other Side is a collection of articles and traditional folk tales that deal with our feelings about and attitudes towards Death, both our own death and that of those nearest and dearest to us. A bridge between earth and heaven, this world and the next, features in the mythology of many different peoples. For example, in Norse legends, Bifröst or Bilröst is a burning rainbow bridge between Midgard, the world, and Asgard, the realm of the gods. The bridge is known as Bilröst in the Poetic Edda; compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and as Bifröst in the Prose Edda; written in the 13th century by Snorri Stureuson. Both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda alternately refer to the bridge as Asbrú (Old Norse Æsirs means bridge). The Persians believed in a bridge between earth and paradise too. In his prayers the penitent in his confession would say: I am wholly without doubt in the existence of the Mazdayaçnian faith; in the coming of the resurrection of the latter body; in the stepping over the bridge Chinvat; as well as in the continuance of paradise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of fairy tales from Poland, Russia, Bohemia and Serbia. It may be said that Bohemian stories, perhaps through the genius of the poet who preserved them, are more artistic, more elegant, and more complete than other stories in their original form. Those from Poland reflected the passive virtues and amiable warmth of the peasants they portrayed. The characteristic of the Russian stories is simpler, even a little childish. And the combination of the Serbian's exalted imagination and keen feeling, their vigorous and beautiful romance made Goethe admired.
