O'LEARY 1.1 Environmental technology Perhaps the place to start this book is with definitions of the two key words [1]: • Technology - the scientific study and practical application of the industrial arts, applied sciences, etc., or the method for handling a specific technical problem. • Environmental - all the conditions, circumstances and influences surrounding and affecting the development of an organism or group of organisms. Environmental technology is the scientific study or the application of methods to understand and handle problems which influence our surround ings and, in the case of this book, the surroundings around oil industry facilities and where oil products are used. Traditionally the phrase has meant the application of additional treatment processes added on to industrial processes to treat air, water and waste before discharge to the environment. Increasingly the phrase has a new meaning where the concept is to create cleaner process technology and move towards sustainabili ty. 1.2 The beginning As we begin our discussion of environmental technology, it is important to take a few moments to remember how we became so involved with this substance, oil. Regardless of our opinions about its use, oil is, and has been, the key resource in the twentieth century. From humble beginnings as a medicine and a lamp oil, oil has become the energy of choice for transport and many other applications and the feedstock for a major class of the material used today, plastic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of oil in the world economy cannot be overstated, and methods for recovering oil will be the subject of much scientific and engineering research for many years to come. Even after the application of primary depletion and secondary recovery processes (usually waterflooding), much oil usually remains in a reservoir, and indeed in some heterogeneous reservoir systems as much as 70% of the original oil may remain. Thus, there is an enormous incentive for the development of improved or enhanced methods of oil recovery, aimed at recovering some portion of this remainil)g oil. The techniques used range from 'improved' secondary flooding methods (including polymer and certain gas injection processes) through to 'enhanced' or 'tertiary' methods such as chemical (surfactant, caustic, foam), gas miscible (carbon dioxide, gas reinjection) and thermal (steam soak and drive, in-situ combustion). The distinction between the classification ofthe methods usually refers to the target oil that the process seeks to recover. That is, in 'improved' recovery we are usually aiming to increase the oil sweep efficiency, whereas in 'tertiary' recovery we aim to mobilise and recover residual or capillary trapped oil. There are a few books and collections of articles which give general overviews of improved and enhanced oil recovery methods. However, for each recovery method, there is such a wide range of interconnected issues concerning the chemistry, physics and fluid mechanics of flow in porous media, that rarely are these adequately reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an initiation to the use of the acoustic method for characterizing formations. The use of acoustic well logging to determine the velocity of compressional waves in formations is common practice and dates back a long time (1952). Full waveform acoustic data acquisition enables loggers to apply signal processing techniques to acoustic data. Such techniques are similar to the ones used in seismic processing. The information obtained by acoustic data processing can be used for a more thorough characterization of formations. The present book is made up of four parts, each describing a specific application of signal processing used for acoustic data.

Book excerpt: Children in the Information Age: Opportunities for Creativity, Innovation and New Activities contains selected papers from the Second International Conference and Exhibition ""Children in the Information Age: Opportunities for Creativity, Innovation and New Activities,"" held in Sofia, Bulgaria, 19-23 May 1987. The contributions made by researchers at the conference covered topics such as the past, present, and future of school informatics in the USSR; the family computer boom and its implications for computer literacy; the new meanings of literacy related to new information and communication technologies; computer use in education; and literacy in the information age. Other papers dealt with computer-based training in India; knowledge based systems for use in pedagogical contexts; informatics competitions in Germany; the information age; information and communication technology in the French educational system; and the role of information technology in education in Australia. The final two chapters present the recommendations that emerged from the conference as well as the recommendations of the Working Meeting of Editors of Journals and Magazines on Informatics in Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social survey has become an essential tool in modern society, providing crucial measurements of social change, describing social life, and guiding government policy. But the validity of surveys is fragile and depends ultimately upon the accuracy of answers to survey questions. As our dependence on surveys grows, so too have questions about the accuracy of survey responses. Authored by a group of experts in cognitive psychology, linguistics, and survey research, Questions About Questions provides a broad review of the survey response problem. Examining the cognitive and social processes that influence the answers to questions, the book first takes up the problem of meaning and demonstrates that a respondent must share the survey researcher's intended meaning of a question if the response is to be revealing and informative. The book then turns to an examination of memory. It provides a framework for understanding the processes that can introduce errors into retrospective reports, useful guidance on when those reports are more or less trustworthy, and investigates techniques for the improvement of such reports. Questions about the rigid standardization imposed on the survey interview receive a thorough airing as the authors show how traditional survey formats violate the usual norms of conversational behavior and potentially endanger the validity of the data collected. Synthesizing the work of the Social Science Research Council's Committee on Cognition and Survey Research, Questions About Questions emphasizes the reciprocal gains to be achieved when insights and techniques from the cognitive sciences and survey research are exchanged. "these chapters provide a good sense of the range of survey problems investigated by the cognitive movement, the methods and ideas it draws upon, and the results it has yielded." —American Journal of Sociology
