Book Synopsis The Early Black-Figured Pottery of Attika in Context (c. 630-570 BCE) by : Alexandra Alexandridou
Download or read book The Early Black-Figured Pottery of Attika in Context (c. 630-570 BCE) written by Alexandra Alexandridou and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting as a starting point the introduction of the black-figure technique in Attic workshops at around 630 BCE, this book attempts a contextual analysis of Attic pottery until late in the first quarter of the sixth century BCE. The shapes and their functions, as well as the iconographic themes are explored through this perspective. This offers an interesting insight into funerary, cultic and profane activities in Athens and the Attic countryside, which is completed by an extensive study of the trade and distribution of Attic vases during this period. The result is a complete overview of early black-figure Attic production, enabling an afresh archaeological approach to late seventh-and early sixth-century Attic society.

Book Synopsis The Potters' Quarter by : Agnes Newhall Stillwell
Download or read book The Potters' Quarter written by Agnes Newhall Stillwell and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1948 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited final part of the publication of the Corinth Potters' Quarter is based on the work of the excavator, A. N. Stillwell, edited and supplemented after her death by J. L. Benson. The pottery, although frequently fragmentary, can often be assigned to known painters or workshops, and the deposits, especially in view of the defective pieces in them, can be argued to contain material almost exclusively of local manufacture. A brief introduction serves to explain the organization of the catalogue and to characterize the principal deposits, most of which contained material from several periods; a summary of represented painters and workshops concludes the chapter. The catalogue presents over 2,300 examples from more than 4,000 inventoried pieces. Almost all are illustrated with photographs, frequently supplemented with detail line drawings of motifs; selected profile drawings represent the principal shapes. A new foldout plan of the Potters' Quarter is included.

Book Synopsis Burial and Ancient Society by : Ian Morris
Download or read book Burial and Ancient Society written by Ian Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and the relevant historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society.
Book Synopsis Vessels and Variety by : Annette Rathje

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing topics of production and distribution, iconography, regional studies, and museum collections, this volume sheds new and important light on perspectives in the fields of ancient pottery studies. The articles, substantial and well-illustrated, cover a wide span of time from the Geometric period and into the Roman period, including new results and material from excavations as well as new methodological approaches. The range of vessels and their varieties discussed include Campana A pottery from the southern Levant and the Black Sea areas; Oinotrian-Euboian pottery in a sanctuary context in Timpone della Motta near Sybaris in the Middle to Late Geometric periods; Early Proto Corinthian aryballos in the western Mediterranean; Greek imported and local pottery from the earliest times in Crotone’s history; iconographic history of the myth of Iphigenia from Athens to southern Italian vase-painting; small terracotta figurines from Peloponnesian sanctuaries; anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures on Etruscan impasto vessels; Cypro-Arcaic pottery; and objects – red-gloss relief decorated sherds and Geometric pottery – housed in Danish museum collections. The articles represent recent Danish archaeological research of the Mediterranean and constitute an important contribution to the ongoing international debate on the roles of pottery in ancient societies.
