From the gift of clay swans, under a banyan tree on a beach at the US-Mexican border, a Mother Earth Puja in the gentle rain of suburban London, sitting for a portrait in oils in an Italian market square, a summer visit to Stonehenge, the launch and publication of The Advent with each book signed by Shri Mataji – you are there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Abhisamayalamkara summarizes all the topics in the vast body of the prajñaparamita sutras. Resembling a zip-file, it comes to life only through its Indian and Tibetan commentaries. Together, these texts not only discuss the "hidden meaning" of the prajñaparamita sutras—the paths and bhumis of sravakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas—but also serve as contemplative manuals for the explicit topic of these sutras—emptiness—and how it is to be understood on the progressive levels of realization of bodhisattvas. Thus these texts describe what happens in the mind of a bodhisattva who meditates on emptiness, making it a living experience from the beginner's stage up through buddhahood. Groundless Paths contains the first in-depth study of the Abhisamayalamkara (the text studied most extensively in higher Tibetan Buddhist education) and its commentaries from the perspective of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. This study consists mainly of translations of Maitreya's famous text and two commentaries on it by Patrul Rinpoche. These are supplemented by three short texts on the paths and bhumis by the same author, as well as extensive excerpts from commentaries by six other Nyingma masters, including Mipham Rinpoche. Thus this book helps close a long-standing gap in the modern scholarship on the prajñaparamita sutras and the literature on paths and bhumis in mahayana Buddhism. Arya Maitreya's Ornament of Clear Realization, with its Indian and Tibetan commentaries, presents the complex dynamics of the path to liberation as a succession of realizations of the empty nature of all phenomena. This presentation is a powerful antidote to whatever two-dimensional views we might hold about spiritual experience and the journey to enlightenment.

Book excerpt: 16 Men and I6 hearts. Some good, some bad, and some downright cruel. In talented teacher Jennifer Grace Donnelly's life, there have been 16 men who've left their mark. From her childhood playmate who was her first kiss, to the traveler who opened her eyes to the world's natural beauty, to the handsome drug addict who only cared about his next fix, they have all been imprinted on Jennifer's heart. The most difficult to forget is the unknown man. During Jennifer's late 30s, he comes back to haunt her dreams. Just like the years when he visited her in bed at night, these long-hidden memories now return to awaken her like to an ugly beast from the past. Her night terrors begin to encroach on her teaching life, blurring her past into present, and forcing her to live in a turbulent world of doubt and fear. As the figure of the unknown man becomes more clear, the truth of her family secrets is revealed. With this knowledge comes an understanding of her relationship to men, and Jennifer must find a way to pull on her reserves of patience and resilience to survive. Even in her bleakest moments, Jennifer will never give up-she knows that she must choose to live. And maybe with time, she can learn to find not only support and comfort in others, but maybe even learn to trust and find new love again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the work of Polish phenomenologist Roman Ingarden (1893-1970) with respect to his ontology, epistemology and aesthetics. An outstanding student of Edmund Husserl, it offers a unique tribute to one of the most important figures in contemporary philosophy. Leszek Sosnowski and Natalia Anna Michna introduce a team of renowned scholars to present new and timely readings of Ingarden's thought, placing his philosophy in a broader historical and cultural context. In doing so, they offer a cutting edge reflection on the relevance, refinement and depth of Ingarden's theory. Chapters are not only retrospective, but also set out the present and future development of philosophy inspired by his works. Reinvigorating the debate about Ingarden's phenomenological legacy and its relevance for contemporary thought, this collection of essays guides us through his place in the history of philosophy and presents new perspectives on selected aspects of his theory.

Saeed is an elegant and sophisticated man with a hidden depth of character and emotions, which soon captivates Maria, one of the tutors at the English Language Teaching Centre. The story unfolds as Saeed and Muhammed navigate their new environment, form bonds with other students, and face personal and cultural challenges. Saeed's impeccable fashion sense, deep respect for women, and endearing struggles with the English language create a charming and multifaceted character who quickly becomes the center of attention, especially for Maria and her friend Sarah. As Saeed and Maria's relationship develops, they both confront their own pasts and insecurities. Maria, recovering from a painful divorce, is drawn to Saeed's sincerity and elegance, while Saeed's attraction to Maria grows stronger despite his own emotional barriers. Their journey is marked by moments of humor, drama, and poignant introspection. Saeed's struggle with his feelings for Maria and his encounters with other students, including the flirtatious and persistent Salma, add layers of complexity to the narrative. The novel explores themes of love, cultural exchange, and personal growth. Saeed's revelations, both about his past and his true feelings, culminate in a touching and dramatic conclusion that emphasizes the depth of human emotion and the universal experience of love and loss. From ostentatious scoring totals to unstoppable teams destined for championships, the NHL boasts a history of greatness. But as die-hard fans well know, greatness isn't the whole story. In this image-rich, licenced celebration of the NHL's past and present, veteran hockey journalist Scott Morrison mines a century of NHL hockey to find the game's 100 most important moments. From Bobby Orr's 1969-70 trophy haul, to Detroit coach Scotty Bowman's unprecedented icing of five Russians at once on the Red Wings' way to their first of several Stanley Cups, the Stastny brothers' defection, and Roger Neilson reviewing a game on VHS, these moments weren't always the photogenic peaks of athletic glory that graced the morning news, but each of them changed the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the evidence for an oral epic tradition in ancient Greece has grown enormously along with our ever-increasing awareness of worldwide oral traditions. John Foley here examines the artistic implications that oral tradition holds for the understanding of the Iliad and Odyssey in order to establish a context for their original performance and modern-day reception. In Homer's Traditional Art, Foley addresses three crucially interlocking areas that lead us to a fuller appreciation of the Homeric poems. He first explores the reality of Homer as their actual author, examining historical and comparative evidence to propose that "Homer" is a legendary and anthropomorphic figure rather than a real-life author. He next presents the poetic tradition as a specialized and highly resonant language bristling with idiomatic implication. Finally, he looks at Homer's overall artistic achievement, showing that it is best evaluated via a poetics aimed specifically at works that emerge from oral tradition. Along the way, Foley offers new perspectives on such topics as characterization and personal interaction in the epics, the nature of Penelope's heroism, the implications of feasting and lament, and the problematic ending of the Odyssey. His comparative references to the South Slavic oral epic open up new vistas on Homer's language, narrative patterning, and identity. Homer's Traditional Art represents a disentangling of the interwoven strands of orality, textuality, and verbal art. It shows how we can learn to appreciate how Homer's art succeeds not in spite of the oral tradition in which it was composed but rather through its unique agency.

Book excerpt: Explores how writers, filmmakers and artists have attempted to reckon with the legacy of a devastating war The Iran-Iraq War was the longest conventional war of the 20th century. The memory of it may have faded in the wake of more recent wars in the region, but the harrowing facts remain: over one million soldiers and civilians dead, millions more permanently displaced and disabled, and an entire generation marked by prosthetic implants and teenage martyrdom. These same facts have been instrumentalized by agendas both foreign and domestic, but also aestheticized, defamiliarized, readdressed and reconciled by artists, writers, and filmmakers across an array of identities: linguistic (Arabic, Persian, Kurdish), religious (Shiite, Sunni, atheist), and political (Iranian, Iraqi, internationalist). Official discourses have unsurprisingly tried to dominate the process of production and distribution of war narratives. In doing so, they have ignored and silenced other voices. Centering on novels, films, memoirs, and poster art that gave aesthetic expression to the Iran-Iraq War, the essays gathered in this volume present multiple perspectives on the war’s most complex and underrepresented narratives. These scholars do not naively claim to represent an authenticity lacking in official discourses of the war, but rather, they call into question the notion of authenticity itself. Finding, deciding upon, and creating a language that can convey any sort of truth at all—collective, national, or private—is the major preoccupation of the texts and critiques in this diverse collection.
