The importance of the isthmus of Panama in every point of view can hardly be over-estimated: and the present rush of emigrants westward, and the daily increasing prospect of its continuance, have given to that locality, both commercially and politically, an interest such as no other country at this moment can boast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two on a Tour in South America T looks like South America this time - and in a hurry. What do you say about being ready to start in six weeks? Orange-blossom made this announcement just before Christmas - of all times. I gulped hard, sat up straight, and gasped, South America! But why? Who under the sun buys books there? A kaleidoscopic array of monkeys, butterflies, orchids, yellow fever, revolutions and coffee chased madly through my brain - about my only associations with the other half of our continent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Hell and Back: My Trip to South America Ell has been glowingly described as a popular and populous place and since I had so Often been told to go there I bought a ticket for South America. Chicago was our first stop. The city divides honor With bean-eating Boston as a windy burg, puffing itself up with pride over What it should be most ashamed. The herd Of humanity rushes here like cattle to Armour's slaughter house, to become food for jails, hospitals, poorhouses, asylums and cemeteries. Shelley - said Hell was a city very much like London, but then he never saw Chicago. From what I saw and heard, If Christ came to Chicago he must have left on the next train. Surreal, poetic, naturalistic, urbane, peasant-born: All styles intersect and play, often within a single piece. There is "The Handsomest Drown Man in the World," the García Márquez fable of a village overcome by the power of human beauty; "The Aleph," Borges' classic tale of a man who discovers, in a colleague's cellar, the Universe. Here is the haunting shades of Juan Rulfo, the astonishing anxiety puzzles of Julio Cortázar, the disquieted domesticity of Clarice Lispector. Provocative, powerful, immensely engaging, The Vintage Book of Latin American Stories showcases the ingenuity, diversity, and continuing excellence of a vast and vivid literary tradition.

She isn’t a chef or a restaurant owner—she’s never even waitressed. Cooking in her tiny Manhattan kitchen was, at least at first, for special occasions—and, too often, an unnecessarily daunting venture. With the same warmth, candor, and can-do spirit her award-winning blog, Smitten Kitchen, is known for, here Deb presents more than 100 recipes—almost entirely new, plus a few favorites from the site—that guarantee delicious results every time. Gorgeously illustrated with hundreds of her beautiful color photographs, The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook is all about approachable, uncompromised home cooking. These are recipes you’ll bookmark and use so often they become your own, recipes you’ll slip to a friend who wants to impress her new in-laws, and recipes with simple ingredients that yield amazing results in a minimum amount of time. Deb tells you her favorite summer cocktail; how to lose your fear of cooking for a crowd; and the essential items you need for your own kitchen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 2 of 2 When I went down to the water to examine my purchase I found that the vessel was in a pitiful condition and needed sound repairing before she could proceed on a long journey. She was sufficiently good for crossing the stream that was all she was used for by the seringueiros but it would be a different matter to go down rapids for some thousands Of kilometres. It took all the strength of my men, the seringueiros, and myself combined to pull the canoe out Of the water upon the beach and to turn her over. We worked hard for two days with saws and hammers, knives, tar, and wadding, in order to stop up a gigantic crack which extended from one end Of the canoe to the other, under her bottom. Although the crack did not go right through, I could well imagine that a hard knock against a rock might be quite sufficient to split the canoe in two. We scraped her and cleaned her; we over hauled and strengthened her thoroughly; we cut rough seats inside, and built an elevated deck upon which the baggage might be comparatively safe from moisture.
