We went sight-seeing and health-seeking, as well as on business intent, to secure personal knowledge of prairie farming, by "doing" the Northwestern Catholic Colonies - with possible and probable choice of new homes for some families who were wearing out both patience and good Irish and American muscle on Middle-Kentucky farms lying back from the Ohio, and cut off from railroad lines. The agitation for the migration of Catholics from the crowded cities East, and the poorer agricultural districts South, was inaugurated fourteen or fifteen years ago. The plan was carried into execution beyond the Mississippi River, so that we find a more or less connected system of plantings scattered in every state bordering its western banks.
