Book excerpt: From the author of the #1 bestseller The Man Who Listens to Horses, a book for all of us seeking to strengthen our human relationships "Monty Roberts will make you marvel."—The New York Times Book Review In The Man Who Listens to Horses, Monty Roberts revealed the depth of communication possible between human and horse. Touching the hearts of more than four million readers worldwide, that memoir—which spent more than a year at the top of The New York Times bestseller list—described his discovery of the "language" of horses and the dramatic effectiveness of removing violence from their training. Now, the world's most famous horse gentler demonstrates how his revolutionary Join-Up technique can be used not just for horses, but as a model for how to strengthen human relationships. With vivid, often deeply moving anecdotes, Roberts shows how the lessons learned from the thousands of horses he has known can provide effective guidelines for improving the quality of our communication with one another—from learning to "read" each other effectively, to creative fear-free environments, and, most importantly, teaching belief in the power of gentleness and trust.

Book excerpt: When she agrees to take on one of the abused horses just rescued by the local SPCA, a new chapter opens in Susan Richards's difficult life. She lost her mother at the age of five and was raised by uncaring relatives; she married unhappily and divorced; and she'd been an alcoholic. Now, at the age of forty-three, she lives with three horses who keep her company: the diva-like Georgia, boyish Tempo and hopelessly romantic Hotshot. While trying to capture another horse assigned to her, Lay Me Down, a skeletal mare, walks into Susan's horse trailer of her own volition. When Susan agrees to take her, she begins to forge a special, healing relationship that alters her life. Poignant and evocative, this is a book for anyone who has ever loved a horse, and for everyone who has ever lost a loved one.

Download or read book First Experience written by Sioux Dallas and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Experience is not a complete book on how to ride, but it is designed to help the beginner choose the best horse for their own use and to select the proper stable for the animal. Animals have feelings just as people do, and because people are supposed to have a better brain, we need to be caring and concerned about the animal. They will serve one faithfully and with unconditional love if they are loved and cared for properly. About the Author Sioux Dallas has loved horses all of her life ever since her father put her in front of him on a horse when she was six months old. However she wasn't financially able to own one until she had finished college and started working. Her first horse was the great-grandson of Man O'War. Dallas had taken lessons in licensed establishments, and one of her jumping instructors had ridden with the Queen's Guards in England. She learned well and began giving lessons to beginners. Dallas was also a charter member in the Riding for the Handicapped School and used her horses free of charge to work with the blind and mentally challenged. She was horrified to learn that supposedly intelligent people knew nothing about matching a horse with the ability of the rider. She felt that the many books on horses were excellent, but not for people who had never owned a horse. She decided to share her knowledge and experience to help others and, hopefully, prevent injury to person and abuse to animals.

As for Black George, such a good horse, it turns out he’s a natural jumper. When he and Abby clear four feet easy as pie, heads start to turn at the ring—buyers’ heads—and Abby knows Daddy won’t turn down a good offer. Then a letter arrives from a private investigator, and suddenly Abby stands to lose not one horse but two. The letter states that Jack’s mare may have been sold to the Lovitts as stolen goods. A mystery unfolds, more surprising than Abby could ever expect. Will she lose her beloved Jack to his rightful owners? Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley raises horses of her own, and her affection and expertise shine through in this inviting horse novel for young readers, set in 1960s California horse country and featuring characters from The Georges and the Jewels.

Download or read book Gunner written by Judy Andrekson and published by Tundra Books. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each book in the True Horse Stories focuses on a contemporary horse from a different part of the world, and each animal is, in his or her own way, a hero. PBJ Decks Smokin Gun (Gunner) is an American Paint Horse, one of the many of Heather Lott Goodwin's herd, and a valuable show animal that won the World Championship Paint Horse title. When Hurricane Katrina passed over the Goodwin property, it took with it the fences, the cattle, and several horses. Heather and her family lived in their horse trailer for six weeks and considered themselves lucky to have safe, comfortable shelter. After the storm, they searched for the animals and recovered many of them. But three months passed before they located Gunner, a hundred miles away. They were told he was in terrible shape and should be put down. Nevertheless, Heather drove on washed-out roads to bring him home, starving, dehydrated, and blind in one eye. With the help of a vet and her mother, she nursed him back to health. Amazingly, nine months later, he was well enough to compete again in the World Championship Paint Horse Show. Gunner's story is a testament to love and to determination.
