Book Synopsis Understanding Cryptography by : Christof Paar
Download or read book Understanding Cryptography written by Christof Paar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryptography is now ubiquitous – moving beyond the traditional environments, such as government communications and banking systems, we see cryptographic techniques realized in Web browsers, e-mail programs, cell phones, manufacturing systems, embedded software, smart buildings, cars, and even medical implants. Today's designers need a comprehensive understanding of applied cryptography. After an introduction to cryptography and data security, the authors explain the main techniques in modern cryptography, with chapters addressing stream ciphers, the Data Encryption Standard (DES) and 3DES, the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), block ciphers, the RSA cryptosystem, public-key cryptosystems based on the discrete logarithm problem, elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC), digital signatures, hash functions, Message Authentication Codes (MACs), and methods for key establishment, including certificates and public-key infrastructure (PKI). Throughout the book, the authors focus on communicating the essentials and keeping the mathematics to a minimum, and they move quickly from explaining the foundations to describing practical implementations, including recent topics such as lightweight ciphers for RFIDs and mobile devices, and current key-length recommendations. The authors have considerable experience teaching applied cryptography to engineering and computer science students and to professionals, and they make extensive use of examples, problems, and chapter reviews, while the book’s website offers slides, projects and links to further resources. This is a suitable textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses and also for self-study by engineers.

Download or read book State of the Art in Applied Cryptography written by Bart Preneel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Electrical Engineering-ESAT at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven regularly runs a course on the state of the art and evolution of computer security and industrial cryptography. The rst course took place in 1983, the second in 1989, and since then the course has been a biennial event. The course is intended for both researchers and practitioners from industry and government. It covers the basic principles as well as the most recent - velopments. Our own interests mean that the course emphasizes cryptography, but we also ensure that the most important topics in computer security are covered. We try to strike a good balance between basic theory and real-life - plications, between mathematical background and judicial aspects, and between recent technical developments and standardization issues. Perhaps the greatest strength of the course is the creation of an environment that enables dialogue between people from diverse professions and backgrounds. In 1993, we published the formal proceedings of the course in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (Volume 741). Since the el d of cryptography has advanced considerably during the interim period, there is a clear need to publish a new edition. Since 1993, several excellent textbooks and handbooks on cryptology have been published and the need for introductory-level papers has decreased. The growth of the main conferences in cryptology (Eurocrypt, Crypto, and Asiacrypt) shows that interest in the eld is increasing.
Download or read book Code Girls written by Liza Mundy and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Hidden Figures and The Girls of Atomic City, Code Girls is the amazing true story of the young American women who cracked German and Japanese military codes during World War II. More than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II, recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to the nation's capital to learn the top secret art of code breaking. Through their work, the "code girls" helped save countless lives and were vital in ending the war. But due to the top secret nature of their accomplishments, these women have never been able to talk about their story--until now. Through dazzling research and countless interviews with the surviving code girls, Liza Mundy brings their story to life with zeal, grace, and passion. Abridged and adapted for a middle grade audience, Code Girls brings this important story to young readers for the first time, showcasing this vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.
Book Synopsis The Cryptographic Imagination by : Shawn James Rosenheim
Download or read book The Cryptographic Imagination written by Shawn James Rosenheim and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1996. In The Cryptographic Imagination, Shawn Rosenheim uses the writings of Edgar Allan Poe to pose a set of questions pertaining to literary genre, cultural modernity, and technology. Rosenheim argues that Poe's cryptographic writing—his essays on cryptography and the short stories that grew out of them—requires that we rethink the relation of poststructural criticism to Poe's texts and, more generally, reconsider the relation of literature to communication. Cryptography serves not only as a template for the language, character, and themes of much of Poe's late fiction (including his creation, the detective story) but also as a "secret history" of literary modernity itself. "Both postwar fiction and literary criticism," the author writes, "are deeply indebted to the rise of cryptography in World War II." Still more surprising, in Rosenheim's view, Poe is not merely a source for such literary instances of cryptography as the codes in Conan Doyle's "The Dancing-Men" or in Jules Verne, but, through his effect on real cryptographers, Poe's writing influenced the outcome of World War II and the development of the Cold War. However unlikely such ideas sound, The Cryptographic Imagination offers compelling evidence that Poe's cryptographic writing clarifies one important avenue by which the twentieth century called itself into being. "The strength of Rosenheim's work extends to a revisionistic understanding of the entirety of literary history (as a repression of cryptography) and then, in a breathtaking shift of register, interlinks Poe's exercises in cryptography with the hyperreality of the CIA, the Cold War, and the Internet. What enables this extensive range of applications is the stipulated tension Rosenheim discerns in the relationship between the forms of the literary imagination and the condition of its mode of production. Cryptography, in this account, names the technology of literary production—the diacritical relationship between decoding and encoding—that the literary imagination dissimulates as hieroglyphics—the hermeneutic relationship between a sign and its content."—Donald E. Pease, Dartmouth College

Book Synopsis The Block Cipher Companion by : Lars R. Knudsen
Download or read book The Block Cipher Companion written by Lars R. Knudsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block ciphers encrypt blocks of plaintext, messages, into blocks of ciphertext under the action of a secret key, and the process of encryption is reversed by decryption which uses the same user-supplied key. Block ciphers are fundamental to modern cryptography, in fact they are the most widely used cryptographic primitive – useful in their own right, and in the construction of other cryptographic mechanisms. In this book the authors provide a technically detailed, yet readable, account of the state of the art of block cipher analysis, design, and deployment. The authors first describe the most prominent block ciphers and give insights into their design. They then consider the role of the cryptanalyst, the adversary, and provide an overview of some of the most important cryptanalytic methods. The book will be of value to graduate and senior undergraduate students of cryptography and to professionals engaged in cryptographic design. An important feature of the presentation is the authors' exhaustive bibliography of the field, each chapter closing with comprehensive supporting notes.
