Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the possibility of developing practical and habitable low-income housing in India based on the implementation of three simple constructs: affordability, cost-recovery and replicability. In this context, Pugh argues for a shift in emphasis in housing policy from radical redevelopment to a system of feasible upgrading. He buttresses his argument by citing the success of various World Bank-aided projects in India. In the process of describing these new efforts, Pugh critically analyzes the Indian government's housing policy, the economics of reform and the failures of land policy in Delhi.

This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. The privatization of former social state housing through recent public-private partnerships is becoming increasingly prevalent in Third World as well as in Western countries. In most Third World countries, this shift has had profound effects upon the patterns of access of shelter. Drawing on studies of South Asian and other Third World contexts, as well as original in-depth empirical research from Amritsar, a city in North-West India, this book offers an analysis of the withdrawal of state housing provision. It develops and applies a unique model based on social status to analyze the new routes of access to housing and land by the urban poor. Its conclusions argue that these new privatization policies largely rely upon already existing informal and self-help settlements which continue to attract the poor and to be the largest housing providers in many cities, thus providing a ready-made safety net for such policies. The inter-linkages between the private state and the public market make up a highly diversified and complex picture of shelter arrangements being accessed by the poor which is reflected in the social differentiation and increasingly stratified housing market. The book argues that these partnership policies therefore have long-term implications upon social patterns of inclusion and exclusion which must be addressed.

Book excerpt: In this unique book on housing in India, 11 leading scholars come together to offer a critical appraisal of current housing policies and programmes in India. Contributions contextualise and conceptualise the Indian housing paradigm with an integrated perspective, covering diverse regions and themes related to housing, such as: Financial constraints to adequate housing in India Policy implementation dynamics of national housing programmes in India, using evidence from Madhya Pradesh Indigenous urbanism and mass housing programmes in Aizawl, Mizoram Studies of the peripheralisation of low income housing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Chennai, Tamil Nadu The chapters in the book show how each theme affects the other, and suggest policy directions on the basis of past successes and failures. They seek new vocabularies to describe the processes of housing over 1.3 billion Indians—particularly capturing urban formations in the small and big cities of India, where housing plays the most dominant role. The book offers varied perspectives representing diverse regions and themes, together presenting a microcosm of housing problems and solutions in India. Housing India will be a key resource for researchers and practitioners of housing and social policy, urban sociology, built environment, urban planning, public policy, development studies and economics. It will also appeal to housing professionals aiming to obtain qualifications and wanting a broad understanding of the housing provision in India. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Housing Policy.

Book excerpt: This book proposes operational approaches to public sector support to community-led development of urban low-income group social housing in the prevailing and medium-term. Within the context of mitigating and redressing the existential threats of climate change and global pathogenic transmission, building on current concerns of global heating and the lessons learnt from the 2020-22 COVID-19 pandemic, the book closely examines recent examples from a wide international range of countries and cities from the Sri Lanka experience to Arab States of the Middle East and the Andes. Topics include maintenance and management of public sector housing, poverty alleviation objectives, climate change mitigation, housing density, local land management and planning, land rights, affordable housing markets, and international governance and administration, ultimately pointing to the universal need for institutional, organisational and human skills development and the compilation and dissemination of operationally successful examples of participatory partnerships for affordable social housing. The book will be of interest to researchers, instructors, practitioners, and students of urban development, housing, environmental design, land-use planning, public administration and environmental health engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Housing policies and programmes tend to result from political expediency, rather than a rational and informed analysis of the situation and the demands of individual households for housing. Housing the Poor in the Developing World aims to show how methods of analysis can be used to improve efficacy and equity in housing projects and policies, with analysis designed for local circumstances. This book is aimed at satisfying the need to bring together methods of analysis from several disciplines which can be applied to housing. Each method is presented and illustrated with a case study to show how it can be used to inform housing policy in a wide range of countries in all parts of the developing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing adequate housing in an increasingly urbanised world is a major challenge of current times. This book puts together a compelling story based on fine-grained analysis of housing processes, as lived by slum-dwellers and their voice-bearers. It situates the lived experience of claiming adequate housing within informal transactions and negotiations of patronage networks vis-Ă -vis the formal institutional opportunities and closures of Indian democracy. In doing so, this research extends an innovative array of conceptual and methodological tools to grasp the context in which housing claims succeed and fail. This book contributes by responding to critical areas of social movement scholarship and by displaying community engagements and tactical strategies to bring about transformative change to claim adequate housing and resist co-opting forces for socially sustainable housing futures.
