Download or read book Multilingualism and Intercultural Communication written by H. Ekkehard Wolff and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the changing sociolinguistic dynamics that have influenced South African society. To date, there has been no published textbook which takes into account changing sociolinguistic dynamics that have influenced South African society. Multilingualism and Intercultural Communication breaks new ground in this arena. The scope of this book ranges from macro-sociolinguistic questions pertaining to language policies and their implementation (or non-implementation) to micro-sociolinguistic observations of actual language-use in verbal interaction, mainly in multilingual contexts of Higher Education (HE). There is a gradual move for the study of language and culture to be taught in the context of (professional) disciplines in which they would be used, for example, Journalism and African languages, Education and African languages, etc. The book caters for this growing market. Because of its multilingual nature, it caters to English and Afrikaans language speakers, as well as the Sotho and Nguni language groups _ the largest languages in South Africa [and also increasingly used in the context of South African Higher Education]. It brings together various inter-linked disciplines such as Sociolinguistics and Applied Language Studies, Media Studies and Journalism, History and Education, Social and Natural Sciences, Law, Human Language Technology, Music, Intercultural Communication and Literary Studies. The unique cross-cutting disciplinary features of the book will make it a must-have for twenty-first century South African students and scholars and those interested in applied language issues.

This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This third, extensively revised edition of The Mammals of the Southern African Subregion contains detailed descriptions of all mammals that occur naturally on the African mainland south of the Cunene and Zambezi rivers, together with all mammals indigenous to the subregion's coastal waters. The rapid accumulation of new information resulting from mammal research in southern Africa, together with radical taxonomic changes across all levels of mammalian classification, have necessitated this new edition, which presents the best and latest data accurately in one comprehensive volume for use not only by scientists but also by an increasingly wide audience of general readers with an interest in the natural history of southern Africa." "J. D. Skinner and C. T. Chimimba have revised, expanded and updated the text in a major project overseen by an editorial committee constituted by the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria. Specialists on each mammalian order have served as subeditors, and a range of independent and internationally recognised authorities have reviewed every species description." "In this edition all the distribution maps and many of the illustrations of mammal prints have been updated and redrawn, several new colour plates have been added, and the whole design of this definitive reference work has been enhanced to ensure easy access to information."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: 5.0, , course: Languages and literature, language: English, abstract: With a sociolinguistic scope, the present research work is aimed to investigate and examine SiSwati variations/dialects in the four regions of Eswatini (Hhohho, Lubombo, Shiselweni and Manzini). Since dialectal study is comparative, the SiSwati texts in the four regions have been compared to a standardized version of the language, that is, the SiSwati variant that is being taught in schools. The major linguistic focus of this study is morphological variation, lexical variation and syntactical variation. Four speakers, from the four different regions have been interviewed for this study. The results indicated that SiSwati, just like any other language spoken by a large speech community, has variations. Major linguistic differences have been noted in the construction of words, the choice of vocabulary used by the speakers, and the construction of sentences. Many scholars, like Khumalo have deliberated on the dialects of Emaswati. These studies mainly focus on the phonological variations. So far, little attention has been paid to awareness regarding other areas of dialect variation such as lexical variation and grammatical variation. This study will present the morphological, lexical and syntactic differences of the dialects of SiSwati in the different regions of Eswatini. The effort of this study is to research the different dialects is an effort to understand the differences in the society. It will identify the possible similarities and differences between the lexical items of these dialects and the standard SiSwati, also, with the aim of showing peculiarities as far as their morphologic systems are concerned.
