Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to sustainable architecture that is based on bio-compatible criteria, it offers an important contribution on the need to redirect emphasis to the relationship between building construction processes and building quality: seeking the optimal balance between production costs, the protection of resources and the quality of both natural and man-made environments. The fundamental objective is to contribute to research into a development system in the construction sector that can lead over time to the creation of settlements based on a design of buildings and urban spaces that is consciously capable of managing exhaustible energy resources; exploiting energy available from renewable and cost-free resources to the full and, at the same time, improving the level of environmental well-being for the individual.Over the last decades, the introduction of regulations regarding the reduction of consumption and the rationalisation of energy costs in buildings, as well as the revision of such regulations following current European decrees, provides a hopeful premise for an effective change of approach in the design of future buildings and the management of those already in existence, which are in actual fact quantitively more substantial. These are the ideas that are extensively examined in the first part of this volume, in four essays written by authoritative experts: Thomas Herzog a world famous architect, Brian Ford, head of the Faculty of Architecture at Notthingham University (Great Britain), Mario Cucinella, a leading architect on the Italian and international scene and Paolo Rava, a founding member of the National Association for Bioecological Architecture ANAB. These are architects who have, for years, based their philosophy and professional activity on issues of sustainability and they contribute to the improvement of state of the art practices on a daily basis. The second part of the book contains projects selected from the "Premio Internazionale Architettura Sostenibile", a prize conceived and promoted by Fassa Bortolo agency and by the Architecture faculty of Ferrara University, now at its third edition. The projects are grouped according to their functional typology, so as to offer the most effective interpretation and allow readers to navigate with ease within their specific field of interest ; descriptions have been elaborated by the editor on the basis of the illustrative reports and technical dossiers provided on each project. A brief text introduces this second part of the volume, schematically summarising the principles behind sustainable construction processes, though in no way does it claim to be exhaustive. The third part of the book deals more specifically with the "Premio Internazionale Architettura Sostenibile". The winning projects and the jury's decisions are presented as well as brief descriptive dossiers on the projects that participated in the first three editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influential Dutch architect's long-awaited manifesto on the everyday environment as the first and best ground for establishing the significance and coherence of architecture. According to N. J. Habraken, intimate and unceasing interaction between people and the forms they inhabit uniquely defines built environment. The Structure of the Ordinary, the culmination of decades of environmental observation and design research, is a recognition and analysis of everyday environment as the wellspring of urban design and formal architecture. The author's central argument is that built environment is universally organized by the Orders of Form, Place, and Understanding. These three fundamental, interwoven principles correspond roughly to physical, biological, and social domains. Historically, "ordinary" environment was the background against which architects built the "extraordinary." Drawing upon extensive examples from archaeological and contemporary sites worldwide, the author illustrates profound recent shifts in the structure of everyday environment. One effect of these transformations, Habraken argues, has been the loss of implicit common understanding that previously enabled architects to formally enhance and innovate while still maintaining environmental coherence. Consequently, architects must now undertake a study of the ordinary as the fertile common ground in which form- and place-making are rooted. In focusing on built environment as an autonomous entity distinct from the societies and natural environments that jointly create it, this book lays the foundation for a new dialogue on methodology and pedagogy, in support of a more informed approach to professional intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parametricism is an avant-garde architecture and design movement that has been growing and maturing over the last 15 years, emerging as a remarkable global force. The tendency started in architecture but now encompasses all design disciplines, from urban design to fashion. In architecture, the style has an international following and is currently progressing beyond its experimental roots to make an impact on a broader scale, with practices like Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) winning and completing large-scale architectural projects worldwide. Parametricism implies that all elements and aspects of an architectural composition or product are parametrically malleable; and the style owes its original, unmistakable physiognomy to its unprecedented use of computational design tools and fabrication methods. All design parameters are conceived as variables that allow the design to vary and adapt to the diverse, complex and dynamic requirements of contemporary society. Although Parametricism has been talked about and hotly debated for a number of years, so far there has been no publication dedicated to Parametricism. The issue is guest-edited by Patrik Schumacher, partner at ZHA, and one of the world's most highly renowned advocates of Parametricism. Contributors: Philippe Block, Shajay Bhooshan, Mark Burry, Mario Carpo, Manuel DeLanda, John Frazer, Mark Foster Gage, Enriqueta Llabres and Eduardo Rico, Achim Menges, Theo Spyropoulos, Robert Stuart-Smith, Philip F Yuan. Featured architects and designers: Arup, Mark Fornes/THEVERYMANY, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Ross Lovegrove.
