Book excerpt: This book on federal executive power in Australia examines what the Commonwealth government can do withour legislative authorization, and considers in detail the constitutional relationships between the Queen and the Governor-General, the Governor-General and the Ministry, and the Parliament and the Executive, and the extent to which the Executive is independent of legislative control. It discusses the nature of the prerogative, and examines the extent to which the courts can review governmental action based upon constituionally conferred power, including an analysis of judicial review of the exercise of prerogative powers, and of the 'reserve powers' of the Crown. Download or read book The English Constitution written by Walter Bagehot and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1867 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great difficulty in the way of a writer who attempts to sketch a living Constitution-a Constitution that is in actual work and power. The difficulty is that the object is in constant change. An historical writer does not feel this difficulty: he deals only with the past; he can say definitely, the Constitution worked in such and such a manner in the year at which he begins, and in a manner in such and such respects different in the year at which he ends; he begins with a definite point of time and ends with one also. But a contemporary writer who tries to paint what is before him is puzzled and a perplexed: what he sees is changing daily. He must paint it as it stood at some one time, or else he will be putting side by side in his representations things which never were contemporaneous in reality.

Book excerpt: This new Liberty Fund edition of James McClellan's classic work on the quest for liberty, order, and justice in England and America includes the author's revisions to the original edition published in 1989 by the Center for Judicial Studies. Unlike most textbooks in American Government, Liberty, Order, and Justice seeks to familiarize the student with the basic principles of the Constitution, and to explain their origin, meaning, and purpose. Particular emphasis is placed on federalism and the separation of powers. These features of the book, together with its extensive and unique historical illustrations, make this new edition of Liberty, Order, and Justice especially suitable for introductory classes in American Government and for high school students in advanced placement courses.
