Book excerpt: In 1871, five ships of the United States Asiatic Fleet headed into Korean waters, intent on establishing relations with Korea, a country that had shunned the outside world for centuries. However, as the country had been in conflict with Western countries just five years earlier, it was going to be no easy task but one full of dangers. The Koreans, who were steadfast and unwilling to compromise the safety of their country, saw the people of the “Flowery Flag Country” as interlopers coming to cause trouble like those before them. No matter what it took, they would resist to the last man. No quarter was expected and none would be given. Sinmiyangyo: The 1871 Conflict Between the United States and Korea is a historical account of what took place during the spring of 1871 between the forces of the United States and Korea. It recounts the story from when the Americans first met curious villagers, and then mysterious Korean government officials, leading to the first big cultural misunderstanding between the two countries, which led to a very hostile interaction that reverberates up to the present day. Dr. Thomas Duvernay, who has researched the event for decades, narrates this exciting story, which includes not only the descriptions of the battles fought but also insights into the people, weapons, and strategies that shaped American-Korean relations for generations. There are others who have written about it, but none have seen it as closely as Dr. Duvernay.

Book Synopsis Armed Bluejackets Ashore by : Nelson H. Lawry
Download or read book Armed Bluejackets Ashore written by Nelson H. Lawry and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among other major navies, that of the United States put armed naval landing parties ashore during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although done primarily to protect American interests, they also safeguarded international communities against the "savage hordes" of "uncivilized" nations. Specially designed light field guns carried aboard gunboats and larger warships sometimes supported the bluejackets and marines, customarily when larger parties more likely to face sharp actions went ashore. Most American naval landings of the nineteenth century took place in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, whereas the following century saw landings against larger and otherwise civilized nations such as Mexico and Russia. The last of these landings were made in conjunction with the Allied assaults on North Africa in November 1942. The first purpose-built landing guns, the bronze Dahlgren muzzleloading smoothbore howitzers, saw extensive deployment during the Civil War, and postwar in Korea. The US Navy's very first steel breechloading guns were landing pieces. Five different marks of 3-inch breechloading guns and several guns of other calibers followed in successive decades, serving for varying periods. The history and characteristics of these landing guns are chronicled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon sits a small monument to 15 men who won the Medal of Honor in what is labeled the Korean Campaign of 1871. The names of six Marines and nine Navy personnel who fought in a short 18-hour war serve as one of the few reminders of an incident not even known to most American servicemen stationed in Korea. And yet, this battle was a pivotal moment in the historical relationship of the United States and what was then the Kingdom of Korea. Before describing the battle that occurred on 10 and 11 June 1871, it is important to understand the reasons Koreans and Amen cans found themselves in conflict in the first place. Thus, it is key to understand the national security policy that motivated the United States into getting involved on the Korean peninsula, and the goals the Americans had once they decided to use force as a tool for enforcing foreign policy on the Korean peninsula.

In my effort to present a picture that gave both Korean and American perspectives, I used historical data from both countries, as well as knowledge based on interviews with experts from both countries. From the United States, I used official State Department cables from several individuals as well as translations of letters sent back and forth between U.S. and Korean officials at the time. These are contained, in their entirety, in Foreign Relations of the United States: 1871, a document containing all official dispatches of the State Department for that year. Other key sources from the American perspective included the official reports filed by the Navy and Marine officers who filled key positions on the naval task force during the time of the battle. These official reports can be found, in their entirety, in Report of the Secretary of the Navy: 1871, a document containing all official Navy and Marine Corps reports from actions and operations participated in during that year.

It is also a history of a clash of worldviews (Weltanschaung), or mentalites. The typical Korean mentality regarding foreign powers remains in essence unchanged since Korea's first encounters with the Western "barbarians" in the 1860s. In the present work, the author attempts to elucidate the role of the respective mindsets of Koreans and Westerners in shaping the course of early interactions between the two.
