Book excerpt: ON ETUDIE LE COMPORTEMENT, AU VOISINAGE D'UNE SINGULARITE ISOLEE, DES SOLUTIONS POSITIVES D'UN SYSTEME D'EQUATIONS AUX DERIVEES PARTIELLES ELLIPTIQUE SEMI-LINEAIRE.

Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX PRESENTES DANS CETTE THESE PORTENT SUR LA CONSTRUCTION DE SOLUTIONS AYANT UN LIEU SINGULIER PRESCRIT POUR CERTAINES EQUATIONS AUX DERIVEES PARTIELLES ELLIPTIQUES SEMI-LINEAIRES. LA METHODE QU'ON UTILISE CONSISTE A DEFINIR UNE FAMILLE DE SOLUTIONS APPROCHEES AU PROBLEME A PARTIR DE SOLUTIONS PARTICULIERES RADIALES, PUIS A ETUDIER LE LINEARISE DE L'OPERATEUR CONSIDERE EN CES SOLUTIONS APPROCHEES DANS DES ESPACES FONCTIONNELS BIEN CHOISIS EN L'OCCURENCE LES ESPACES DE HOLDER A POIDS. ENFIN, LA CONCLUSION EST OBTENUE EN UTILISANT LE THEOREME DES FONCTIONS IMPLICITES OU LE THEOREME DU POINT FIXE. DANS LE PREMIER ARTICLE, ON CONSTRUIT UNE SOLUTION DU PROBLEME AVEC NON-LINEARITE SOUS-CRITIQUE DE LIEU SINGULIER EGAL A UNE SOUS-VARIETE COMPACTE SANS BORD. DANS LE DEUXIEME ARTICLE, ON S'INTERESSE AU CAS SUR-CRITIQUE ET ON MONTRE L'EXISTENCE DE SOLUTION FAIBLE POSITIVE DU PROBLEME CONSIDERE DANS LA BOULE UNITE, AYANT UNE SINGULARITE NON ELIMINABLE EN UN POINT FIXE PROCHE DE L'ORIGINE. ON DONNE EN PARTICULIER UNE DEMONSTRATION A UN RESULTAT CONCERNANT L'EQUATION D'EMDEN ENONCE PAR H. MATANO. DANS LE TROISIEME ARTICLE, ON GENERALISE LE RESULTAT PRECEDENT AU CAS D'UN NOMBRE FINI DE SINGULARITES ISOLEES, PLUS PRECISEMENT, ON MONTRE L'EXISTENCE D'UN OUVERT REGULIER CONNEXE CONTENANT UN NOMBRE FINI DE POINTS FIXES ET L'EXISTENCE D'UNE SOLUTION FAIBLE POSITIVE DU PROBLEME QUI EST SINGULIERE EN CHACUN DE CES POINTS. LE QUATRIEME ARTICLE DE LA THESE EST CONSACRE A L'ETUDE DU PROBLEME DE YAMABE SINGULIER. ON Y MONTRE UN RESULTAT DE NON EXISTENCE DE SOLUTION DU PROBLEME DEFINI SUR UN OUVERT ETOILE PAR RAPPORT A UN POINT QUI A UNE SINGULARITE NON EMILINABLE EN CE POINT. ON Y ETEND AUSSI LES RESULTATS DE R. MAZZEO ET F. PACARD AU CAS DU PROBLEME DE YAMABE DEFINI SUR UN OUVERT BORNE CONTENANT DEUX POINTS FIXES. ON DONNE UNE CONDITION SUFFISANTE PORTANT SUR CES DEUX POINTS POUR QU'IL EXISTE UNE SOLUTION FAIBLE POSITIVE DU PROBLEME QUI EST SINGULIERE EN CHACUN DE CES POINTS.

It was held on July 1-5, 1991 at the Centre International de Recherches Mathematiques (C.I.R.M.) at Luminy, near Marseille (France). This collection of articles, covering many aspects of the theory of integrable Hamiltonian systems, both finite and infinite-dimensional, with an emphasis on the algebro-geometric meth ods, is published here as a tribute to Verdier who had planned this confer ence before his death in 1989 and whose active involvement with this topic brought integrable systems to the fore as a subject for active research in France. The death of Verdier and his wife on August 25, 1989, in a car accident near their country house, was a shock to all of us who were acquainted with them, and was very deeply felt in the mathematics community. We knew of no better way to honor Verdier's memory than to proceed with both the School on Integrable Systems at the C.I.M.P.A. (Centre International de Mathematiques Pures et Appliquees in Nice), and the Conference on the same theme that was to follow it, as he himself had planned them.

Available knowledge of constitutive relations and environmental interactions may be limiterl. As a result, many configurations may he compatible with the rlata. Such questions are incompletely poserl. The papers in this volume address a wide variety of these issues as they are perceived by the material scientist and the mathematician. They represent a portion of the significant activity which has been underway in recent years, from the experimental arena and physical theory to the analysis of differential equations and computation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of these notes is the character variety of representations of a surface group in a Lie group. The author emphasizes the various points of view (combinatorial, differential, and algebraic) and is interested in the description of its smooth points, symplectic structure, volume and connected components. He also shows how a three manifold bounded by the surface leaves a trace in this character variety. These notes were originally designed for students with only elementary knowledge of differential geometry and topology. In the first chapters, the author does not focus on the details of the differential geometric constructions and refers to classical textbooks, while in the more advanced chapters proofs occasionally are provided only for special cases where they convey the flavor of the general arguments. These notes might also be used by researchers entering this fast expanding field as motivation for further studies. The concluding paragraph of every chapter provides suggestions for further research.

Book excerpt: This book identifies three of the exceptionally fruitful periods of the millennia-long history of the mathematical tradition of India: the very beginning of that tradition in the construction of the now-universal system of decimal numeration and of a framework for planar geometry; a classical period inaugurated by Aryabhata’s invention of trigonometry and his enunciation of the principles of discrete calculus as applied to trigonometric functions; and a final phase that produced, in the work of Madhava, a rigorous infinitesimal calculus of such functions. The main highlight of this book is a detailed examination of these critical phases and their interconnectedness, primarily in mathematical terms but also in relation to their intellectual, cultural and historical contexts. Recent decades have seen a renewal of interest in this history, as manifested in the publication of an increasing number of critical editions and translations of texts, as well as in an informed analytic interpretation of their content by the scholarly community. The result has been the emergence of a more accurate and balanced view of the subject, and the book has attempted to take an account of these nascent insights. As part of an endeavour to promote the new awareness, a special attention has been given to the presentation of proofs of all significant propositions in modern terminology and notation, either directly transcribed from the original texts or by collecting together material from several texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an important text of the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics, probably composed in the 16th century. In the Indian astronomical tradition, the karaṇa texts are essentially computational manuals, and they often display a high level of ingenuity in coming up with simplified algorithms for computing planetary longitudes and other related quantities. Karaṇapaddhati, however, is not a karaṇa text. Rather, it discusses the paddhati or the rationale for arriving at suitable algorithms that are needed while preparing a karaṇa text for a given epoch. Thus the work is addressed not to the almanac maker but to the manual maker. Karaṇapaddhati presents the theoretical basis for the vākya system, where the true longitudes of the planet are calculated directly by making use of certain auxiliary notions such as the khaṇḍa, maṇḍala and dhruva along with tabulated values of changes in the true longitude over certain regular intervals which are expressed in the form of vākyas or mnemonic phrases. The text also discusses the method of vallyupasaṃhāra, which is essentially a technique of continued fraction expansion for obtaining optimal approximations to the rates of motion of planets and their anomalies, involving ratios of smaller numbers. It also presents a new fast convergent series for π which is not mentioned in the earlier works of the Kerala school. As this is a unique text presenting the rationale behind the vākya system and the computational procedures used in the karaṇa texts, it would serve as a useful companion for all those interested in the history of astronomy. The authors have provided a translation of the text followed by detailed notes which explain all the computational procedures, along with their rationale, by means of diagrams and equations.
