Book excerpt: The design of a single stage axial supersonic compressor with a predicted performance of 2.8:1 stage pressure ratio at 82% adiabatic efficiency and 4 lb/sec airflow is discussed. The results of a gas generator performance study to evaluate non-regenerated designs with 16:1 pressure ratio compressors and turbine inlet temperatures between 2500 F and 3000 F are presented and discussed. The design point specific fuel consumption of the engines studied ranged from 0.415 to 0.438 lb/hp/hr. At 50% power this range increased to 0.465 and 0.534 respectively. The engine configuration which indicated the lowest specific fuel consumption has a two spool gas generator and variable stator free power turbine. The preliminary designs of a two stage axial/centrifugal compressor and an advanced gas generator which incorporates this compressor are discussed. The predicted performance of the compressor is 16:1 pressure ratio at an adiabatic efficiency of 77.5% and an airflow of 4 lb/sec. The predicted design point specific fuel consumption and power at a 2500 F turbine inlet temperature are 0.431 lb/hp/hr and 785 hp respectively. The results of a preliminary design study for a variable geometry axial compressor rotor concept are also discussed. This concept offers the potential for improved part speed compressor performance and stage matching. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report describes the development of the complete stage for the 2.8:1 supersonic axial compressor design. The performance of the overall stage including the exit stators and interconnecting duct was evaluated through experimental testing with the rotor and inlet guide vanes developed under the previous phase of this program. The experimental results are analyzed and compared with the design data and criteria for each of the blade rows as well as the overall stage. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report describes the development of the rotor for the 2.8:1 single stage supersonic axial compressor design. The rotor performance was evaluated through experimental testing with the inlet guide vanes but without the exit stator. The experimental results are analyzed and compared to the design data and criteria. Although a circumferential flow distortion at the rotor exit prevented a very accurate assessment of the performance potential, the data provided ample evidence that the rotor performance goals could be met with uniform exit conditions. The presence of the exit stator during the stage development tests in the subsequent phase was expected to reduce the flow distortion at the rotor exit to near uniform conditions. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark joint publication between the National Air and Space Museum and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics chronicles the evolution of the small gas turbine engine through its comprehensive study of a major aerospace industry. Drawing on in-depth interviews with pioneers, current project engineers, and company managers, engineering papers published by the manufacturers, and the tremendous document and artifact collections at the National Air and Space Museum, the book captures and memorializes small engine development from its earliest stage. Leyes and Fleming leap back nearly 50 years for a first look at small gas turbine engine development and the seven major corporations that dared to produce, market, and distribute the products that contributed to major improvements and uses of a wide spectrum of aircraft. In non-technical language, the book illustrates the broad-reaching influence of small turbinesfrom commercial and executive aircraft to helicopters and missiles deployed in recent military engagements. Detailed corporate histories and photographs paint a clear historical picture of turbine development up to the present. See for yourself why The History of North American Small Gas Turbine Aircraft Engines is the most definitive reference book in its field. The publication of The History of North American Small Gas Turbine Aircraft Engines represents an important milestone for the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). For the first time, there is an authoritative study of small gas turbine engines, arguably one of the most significant spheres of aeronautical technology in the second half o

Book excerpt: The report describes the aerodynamic, thermal, and mechanical design and analysis, fabrication, and experimental evaluation of a transpiration cooled, single stage axial-flow turbine component capable of operation at 2500F average inlet temperature. Combustor design and development and test rig design are described, as well as stator vane hot thermal and cold aerodynamic cascade testing. The objective of the program was to advance and demonstrate high turbine inlet technology for use in a gas generator with a compressor pressure ratio of 8 to 10 and an airflow of 4 pounds per second. Additional objectives included turbine work of 140 Btu per pound of airflow at a high level of turbine efficienty. Phase I report presents the design and analysis. It was concluded that the advanced technology incorporated in the turbine design relative to blade cooling and turbine mechanical integrity are practical and can be applied to the design of advanced small gas turbines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the work was to define, by analysis and experimental evaluation, the design criteria and performance characteristics of the high- pressure-ratio, single-stage centrifugal compressor. The overall performance target was a pressure ratio of 10:1 at an adiabatic efficiency of 80 percent at an airflow of 2 pounds per second. The research was expected to lead to development of advanced technologies applicable to small gas turbine engines. The potential advances identified were: (1) Doubling of current power to weight ratio, (2) Reducing full and part load fuel consumption, and (3) Minimizing cost per horsepower. To illustrate the advances possible, two types of thermodynamic cycles (simple and regenerative) were studied. It was shown that a compressor meeting the above targets would provide an opportunity for reducing specific fuel consumptions to 0.49 pound per horsepower per hour (simple cycle) and 0.38 pound per horsepower per hour (regenerative). This report presents the design and test results of a single-stage, high-pressure-ratio (10:1) centrifugal compressor. Impeller and diffuser modifications are discussed, including diffuser throat boundary-layer bleed.

Book excerpt: A cursory design study of the gas generator involving the preliminary design and analysis of a family of axial compressors was conducted. Each axial compressor was designed to be capable of match with advanced centrifugal technology. The minimum overall axial-centrifugal design pressure ratio for each compressor configuration was 16:1. The engine performance using the characteristics of the compressor designs was evaluated and an optimum gas generator configuration was selected. The axial compressor for the optimum gas generator configuration was detail designed for test rig evaluation. This axial compressor has two stages and a 3.0:1 design pressure ratio. The design flow rate is 5.0 pound-per-second and the inlet tip radius is 2.72 inches. (Author).
