The object of this aspect of the project is to investigate the modes of adsorption of NO on the Cu/?-alumina sorbents, to investigate the potential activity of these materials for the catalysis of the reduction of NO. Additionally, when subsequent measurements of NO interacting with a sulfated sorbent are investigated, a baseline of data will have been obtained which can be used to evaluate the effects of surface sulfation on the adsorption process in the absence of other competing effects. Based on the current results and by comparing results with those found by others, the authors have determined that the copper species exist predominantly as isolated copper atoms on the aluminum oxide surface, which behave chemically as copper aluminate. The copper species is responsible for the formation of an NO/Cu{sup 2+} complex which gives rise to an infrared absorption at 1,863 cm−1. There do exist some Cu species on the surface, which are formed only after some time by an interaction with NO, which give rise to an NO−/Cu+ complex with an infrared absorption at approximately 1,700 cm−1. Additionally, an intense feature at 1,640 cm−1 is observed which may be due to NO2 on the surface, which is the expected oxidation product if NO reduces Cu from Cu{sup 2+} to Cu+.

Book excerpt: The NOXSO process is a dry, post-combustion flue gas treatment technology which uses a regenerable sorbent to simultaneously adsorb sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NO3 from the flue gas of a coal-fired utility boiler. In the process, the SO2 is reduced to sulfur by-product and the NO3 is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen. It is predicted that the process can economically remove 90% of the acid rain precursor gases from the flue gas stream in a retrofit or new facility. The objective of the NOXSO Demonstration Project is to design, construct, and operate a flue gas treatment system utilizing the NOXSO process. The effectiveness of the process will be demonstrated by achieving significant reductions in emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides. In addition, sufficient operating data will be obtained to confirm the process economics and provide a basis to guarantee performance on a commercial scale. The project is presently in the project definition and preliminary design phase. Data obtained during pilot plant testing which was completed on July 30, 1993 is being incorporated in the design of the commercial size plant. A suitable host site to demonstrate the NOXSO process on a commercial scale is presently being sought. Preliminary engineering studies provided information to decide on the basic plant arrangement. A scaled up POC design was selected as the general arrangement of choice based on a cost versus technical risk assessment. The first step in developing an adsorber computer simulation was completed. Several processes for producing liquid SO2 from the regenerator offgas were developed and evaluated. It was concluded that the Claus and burn process which involves making elemental sulfur as an intermediate product was the best choice. The NOXSO process computer simulation was updated to include semi-plug solids flow through the fluidized beds of the sorbent heater and cooler. Heat loss calculations were also added.

Book excerpt: Based on the work described simultaneous SO2/Nox removal from flue gas based on direct contact of the gas with SRB and T. denitrificans co-cultures or cultures-in-series has been eliminated as a viable process concept at this time. The technical reasons are as follows: (1) NO inhibition of SO2 reduction by D. desulfuricans - Although the NO concentrations used in the experiments described above are somewhat higher than that found in a typical flue gas, it is quite possible that at lower NO concentrations (or partial pressures) the inhibiting effects will simply take longer to become apparent. (2) Nitrate suppression of NO removal - As noted previously, the cultivation of T. denitrificans in a microbial flue gas treatment system (either one or two stages) would require sulfide-limiting conditions. Therefore, the electron acceptor must be in excess, requiring nitrate in the T. denitrificans process culture. As shown in experiments described above, nitrate significantly suppresses the removal of NO from a feed gas making simultaneous SO2/NOx removal impractical by microbial means. (3) O2 inhibition of SO2 and NO reduction - It has been demonstrated that D. desulfuricans working cultures are tolerant of up to 1.7% O2 in the feed gas. However, further increases in the O2 partial pressure in the feed gas resulted in O2 inhibition of SO2 reduction. These inhibiting levels of O2 are comparable to those concentrations found in flue gases (3). Therefore, in any process in which raw flue gas contacts a D. desulfuricans culture marginal stability at best can be expected.

Book excerpt: The proposed research seeks to advance/improve current flue gas cleanup catalyst technology by modifying promising copper-exchanged zeolite NO decomposition catalysts which reduce NO to elemental nitrogen and oxygen in the absence of an added reducing gas. The authors believe that this approach has great potential. Copper on alumina has been investigated by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) as a NO(subscript x)/SO2 abatement catalyst. Copper on alumina acts as a sorbent for SO2, forming a surface sulfate upon adsorption in an oxygen-containing atmosphere, and as a catalyst for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO(subscript x) using ammonia; both CuO and CuSO4 on the surfaces of these materials are active SCR catalysts. SO2 adsorption in the PETC studies was carried out at 673K, a temperature well within the range for active NO decomposition by the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst. The authors believe that by beginning with a material which decomposes NO without needing an added reducing gas, they will be able to design a catalyst which will act as a regenerable NO(subscript x)/SO2 abatement catalyst which does not need ammonia to accomplish NO(subscript x) reduction, and which will accomplish SO2 abatement by adsorption, similar to the copper on alumina catalyst. Coupled with a SO2 oxidation catalyst, this successful system will be able to remove both NO(subscript x) and SO2 from flue gases with no added reducing agent and no waste.

Book excerpt: Simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx using a regenerable solid sorbent will constitute an important improvement over the use of separate processes for the removal of these two pollutants from stack gases and possibly eliminate several shortcomings of the individual SO2 and NOx removal operations. Recent studies at PETC considered cerium oxide as an alternate sorbent to CuO. The present study aims to determine the effects of ammonia on the sulfation of the sorbent and to obtain a rate expression for the regeneration of alumina-supported CeO2 sorbents. In the past quarter the effect of ammonia on sulfation was investigated. It was found that the presence of ammonia affects the sulfation process unfavorably by forming ammonium sulfate species on the surface which subsequently decompose and cause sulfur loss from the surface. Since formation of surface ammonium sulfates increase the sorbent mass, it is difficult to deduce the magnitude of the sulfur loss from the surface only by thermogravimetric analysis.

Book excerpt: With the continual increase in the utilization of high sulfur and high nitrogen containing fossil fuels, the release of airborne pollutants into the environment has become a critical problem. The fuel sulfur is converted to SO2 during combustion. Fuel nitrogen and a fraction of the nitrogen from the combustion air are converted to nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, NO3 For the past five years Combustion Engineering (now Asea Brown Boveri or ABB) and, since 1986, the University of Tulsa (TU) have been investigating the oxidation of H2S by the facultatively anaerobic and autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus denitrificans and have developed a process, concept for the microbial removal of H2S from a gas stream the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO by D. desulfuricans and T. denitrificans co-cultures and cultures-in-series was demonstrated. These systems could not be sustained due to NO inhibition of D. desulfuricans. However, a preliminary economic analysis has shown that microbial reduction of SO2 to H2S with subsequent conversion to elemental sulfur by the Claus process is both technically and economically feasible if a less expensive carbon and/or energy source can be found. It has also been demonstrated that T. denitrificans can be grown anaerobically on NO(g) as a terminal electron acceptor with reduction to elemental nitrogen. Microbial reduction of NO3 is a viable process concept for the disposal of concentrated streams of NO3 as may be produced by certain regenerable processes for the removal of SO2 and NO3 from flue gas.
