Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is routinely used in performance prediction and design of aircraft, turbomachinery, automobiles, and in many other industrial applications. Despite its wide range of use, deficiencies in its prediction accuracy still exist. One critical weakness is the accurate simulation of complex turbulent flows using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. The goal of this research has been to develop an eddy viscosity type turbulence model to increase the accuracy of flow simulations for mildly separated flows, flows with rotation and curvature effects, and flows with surface roughness. It is accomplished by developing a new zonal one-equation turbulence model which relies heavily on the flow physics; it is now known in the literature as the Wray-Agarwal one-equation turbulence model. The effectiveness of the new model is demonstrated by comparing its results with those obtained by the industry standard one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model and two-equation Shear-Stress-Transport k -- [omega] model and experimental data. Results for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows in and about complex geometries are presented. It is demonstrated that the Wray-Agarwal model can provide the industry and CFD researchers an accurate, efficient, and reliable turbulence model for the computation of a large class of complex turbulent flows.

This type of problem currently poses one of the greatest challenges for computational methods because its characteristics covers a wide range of physical processes that often place contradictory requirements on the numerics employed. This thesis seeks to investigate the physics of complex, separated flows pertinent to aeronautical engineering and to assess the performance of variants of the Implicit Large-Eddy Simulation approach in predicting this type of problem realistically. For this purpose, different numerical solution strategies based on high-resolution methods, distinguished by their order of accuracy, are used in precursor simulations and one selected approach is applied to a fully three-dimensional wing flow. In order to isolate the development from laminar to turbulent flow after separation has occurred, the prototype Taylor-Green Vortex is considered. Here, the behaviour of the numerical schemes during the linear, non-linear and fully turbulent stages in the flow evolution is tested for different grid sizes. It is found that the resolution power and the likelihood of symmetry breaking is increasing with the order of accuracy of the numerical method. These two properties allow the flow to develop more realistically on coarse grids if higher order schemes are employed. In the next step, flow separation from a gently curved surface is included. The fundamental study of a statistically two-dimensional channel flow with hill-type constrictions demonstrates the basic applicability of ILES to problems featuring massive separation. Without specific wall-treatment, high-resolution methods can improve prediction of the detachment location when compared to classical Large-Eddy Simulations. Book excerpt: Abstract The goal of the present research is to develop and assess multiscale and hybrid turbulence models in simulation of separated turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers in terms of grid refinement and CPU resources required for a certain level of spectral resolution of the separated flow. These investigated multiscale turbulence models include the DES (Detached Eddy Simulation), hybrid RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes) /LES (Large Eddy Simulation) and PANS (Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes) closure models. These techniques adapt a turbulence model, that function as a RANS model in regions where the grids are highly stretched and the high Reynolds number boundary layer is attached, to function as a sub-grid scale LES type model where the grid is nearly isotropic in the separated flow regions. This accomplished by reducing the turbulence eddy viscosity to promote resolution of more turbulence scales in these regions while still reverting to the original RANS behavior in attached flow and near wall regions. The sensitivity of the computed results to multiscale closure model parameters are compared for three developed formulations of the DES model, one variant of hybrid RANS/LES model, a proposed adaptation of the PANS model and the original multiscale SST-DES model for a number of problems involving unsteady separated high Reynolds number flow. The flow configurations include transonic flow over open cavity, subsonic flow over a back facing step and flow over wall-mounted hump. Simulation predictions are compared with experimental data and also equivalent LES simulations. Simulated results show that these models perform better when there is a distinct demarcation between the attached and separated regions and unsteady shear layers dominate the flow. Computed results show that multiscale methods based on the modification of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate provide the most accurate results and the computed results for the unsteady spectra amplitude and frequency are significantly influenced by the model parameters and the grids. These models provide a useful tool for predicting complex 3-D separated unsteady flows over an expansive dynamic range at high Reynolds number and are comparable to LES predictions at (1/6)th - (1/10)th the corresponding LES CPU resources.
