Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents the simulation of performance of air conditioning system in the vehicle. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the relationship of performance of a car air-conditioning system and with variable speed of the compressor. The thesis describes the fundamental of air-conditioning system, the way the system works and brief explanation of each component involved in air conditioning system. The simulation was done using Matlab Software to obtain the important parameters and data. The COP indicate the performance drop due to higher speed of the compressor. The speed of compressor affects the displacement volume of the refrigerant than affected the mass flow rate of the refrigerant and remain constant. Thus the cause of the mass flow rate make the cooling capacity slightly decrease when the speed of the compressor increases but for the power input of the compressor increases due to the increasing of the compressor speed. However the simulation does not consider the mass of the refrigerant. If the mass of the refrigerant is being considered it would give a better result for the simulation of the performance of the air conditioning system.

Book excerpt: In recent years, operational prediction and optimisation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and central plant to minimise the energy required to maintain building indoor conditions have become increasingly important. To effectively design and implement an energy management program for building energy systems, a simulation study must be performed. This thesis describes research conducted into the development of a modular simulation program for analysing the performance of HVAC systems and central plant. The computer program uses a quasi-steady state modelling approach and is able to simulate a wide variety of systems which are configured using available component models. Steady state mathematical models of HVAC components are developed using fundamental heat and mass transfer principles, laws of conservation of mass and energy and where appropriate empirical data. The carponent models are formulated to allow for the effects of various control strategies on the performance of systems and plant to be investigated. The program is applied to simulate a part of the Collins' Building variable air volume (VAV) air conditioning system and a hypothetical central cooling plant. The results of the simulation exercises are presented and analysed. The issue of validation and building energy simulation models is discussed. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for further work are made.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated performance simulation of buildings and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems can help reducing energy consumption and increasing level of occupant comfort. However, no singe building performance simulation (BPS) tool offers sufficient capabilities and flexibilities to accommodate the ever-increasing complexity and rapid innovations in building and system technologies. One way to alleviate this problem is to use co-simulation. The co-simulation approach represents a particular case of simulation scenario where at least two simulators solve coupled differential-algebraic systems of equations and exchange data that couples these equations during the time integration. This paper elaborates on issues important for co-simulation realization and discusses multiple possibilities to justify the particular approach implemented in a co-simulation prototype. The prototype is verified and validated against the results obtained from the traditional simulation approach. It is further used in a case study for the proof-of-concept, to demonstrate the applicability of the method and to highlight its benefits. Stability and accuracy of different coupling strategies are analyzed to give a guideline for the required coupling frequency. The paper concludes by defining requirements and recommendations for generic cosimulation implementations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the latest modeling and control technologies in the context of air-conditioning systems. Firstly, it introduces the state-space method for developing dynamic models of all components in a central air-conditioning system. The models are primarily nonlinear and based on the fundamental principle of energy and mass conservation, and are transformed into state-space form through linearization. The book goes on to describe and discuss the state-space models with the help of graph theory and the structure-matrix theory. Subsequently, virtual sensor calibration and virtual sensing methods (which are very useful for real system control) are illustrated together with a case study. Model-based predictive control and state-space feedback control are applied to air-conditioning systems to yield better local control, while the air-side synergic control scheme and a global optimization strategy based on the decomposition-coordination method are developed so as to achieve energy conservation in the central air-conditioning system. Lastly, control strategies for VAV systems including total air volume control and trim & response static pressure control are investigated in practice.

Book excerpt: This research addresses the question of what are the energy consequences for oversizing of an air conditioner in a home. Conventional wisdom holds that oversizing the AC results in significant energy penalties. However, the reason for this was shown to be due to crankcase heaters and not due to cycling performance of the AC, and is only valid for a particular set of assumptions. Adding or removing individual characteristics, such as ducts or crankcase heaters, can have measurable impacts on energy use. However, with all other home characteristics held constant, oversizing the AC generally has a small effect on cooling energy use, even if the cycling performance of the unit is poor. The relevant aspects of air conditioner modeling are discussed to illustrate the effects of the cycling loss coefficient, Cd, capacity, climate, ducts and parasitic losses such as crankcase heaters. A case study of a typical 1960's vintage home demonstrates results in the context of whole building simulations using EnergyPlus.

Book excerpt: This research introduces and compares various THIC systems firstly and then focuses on the dedicated outdoor air system - dry coil (DOAS-DC) system, because the DOAS-DC system can be conveniently built by retrofitting exiting conventional air conditioning systems. System configuration, operation strategy as well as strengths and weakness of the DOAS-DC system are analysed. Simulation study on the platform of EnergyPlus is conducted to compares the performance of the DOAS-DC system with those of conventional constant air volume (CAV) system in terms of energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort. A typical office space is built on EnergyPlus. The simulation tests are performed using the hot and humid weather data in Hong Kong. Annual energy consumption of the DOAS-DC system and the CAV system serving the same office space are obtained to compare their energy performances. The simulation results indicate that energy consumption of the DOAS-DC system is 20.1% less than that of the conventional CAV system while maintaining the same indoor design parameters. Besides, the DOAS-DC system can maintain more stable indoor thermal parameters, i.e. the indoor temperature and humidity, than the CAV system.
