Book excerpt: Numerical modeling of two- and three-dimensional low Reynolds number gas flows from small nozzles has been performed using the direct simulation (DSMC) method. The objective of this effort is to gain an improved understanding of performance and plume interaction phenomena for low thrust devices and thus improve the design and optimization process for a variety of micro-propulsion systems. Simulations were performed for a wide range of flow parameters using the SMILE parallel DSMC code. Validation has been conducted through comparison of mass flow and thrust values obtained numerically with results of experimental measurements carried out recently by AFRL researchers.

Book excerpt: th This volume contains the papers presented at the 16 DGLR/STAB-Symposium held at the Eurogress Aachen and organized by RWTH Aachen University, Germany, November, 3 - 4, 2008. STAB is the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association, founded towards the end of the 1970's, whereas DGLR is the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal Oberth e.V.). The mission of STAB is to foster development and acceptance of the discipline “Aerodynamics” in Germany. One of its general guidelines is to concentrate resources and know-how in the involved institutions and to avoid duplication in research work as much as possible. Nowadays, this is more necessary than ever. The experience made in the past makes it easier now, to obtain new knowledge for solving today's and tomorrow's problems. STAB unites German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industry doing research and project work in numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics for aerospace and other applications. This has always been the basis of numerous common research activities sponsored by different funding agencies. Since 1986 the symposium has taken place at different locations in Germany every two years. In between STAB workshops regularly take place at the DLR in Göttingen.

Book excerpt: A method to obtain coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics-Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (CFD-DSMC), 3-D flow field solutions for highly blunt bodies at low incidence is presented and applied to one concept of the Mars Sample Return Orbiter vehicle as a demonstration of the technique. CFD is used to solve the high-density blunt forebody flow defining an inflow boundary condition for a DSMC solution of the afterbody wake flow. By combining the two techniques in flow regions where most applicable, the entire mixed flow field is modeled in an appropriate manner. Glass, Christopher E. and Gnoffo, Peter A. Book excerpt: An uncoupled CFD-DSMC technique is developed and applied to provide solutions for continuum jets interacting with rarefield external flows. The technique is based on a correlation of the appropriate Bird breakdown parameter for a transitional-rarefield condition that defines a surface within which the continuum solution is unaffected by the external flow-jet interaction. The method is applied to two problems to assess and demonstrate its validity: one of a jet interaction in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the other in the moderately rarefield regime. Results show that the appropriate Bird breakdown surface for uncoupling the continuum and non-continuum solutions is a function of a non-dimensional parameter relating the momentum flux and collisionality between the two interacting flows.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research endeavors to better understand the physical vapor deposition (PVD) vapor transport process by determining the most appropriate fluidic model to design PVD coating manufacturing. An initial analysis was completed based on the calculation of Knudsen number from titanium vapor properties. The results show a dense Navier-Stokes solver best describes flow near the evaporative source, but the material properties suggest expansion into the chamber may result in a strong drop in density and a rarefied flow close to the substrate.A hybrid CFD-DSMC solver is constructed in OpenFOAM for rapidly rarefying flow fields such as PVD vapor transport. The models are patched together combined using a new patching methodology designed to take advantage of the one-way motion of vapor from the CFD region to the DSMC region. Particles do not return to the dense CFD region, therefore the temperature and velocity can be solved independently in each domain. This novel technique allows a hybrid method to be applied to rapidly rarefying PVD flow fields in a stable manner.Parameter studies are performed on a CFD, Navier-Stokes continuum based compressible solver, a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) rarefied particle solver, a collisionless free molecular solver and the hybrid CFD-DSMC solver. The radial momentum at the inlet and radial diffusion characteristics in the flow field are shown to be the most important to achieve an accurate deposition profile. The hybrid model also shows sensitivity to the shape of the CFD region and rarefied regions shows sensitivity to the Knudsen number. The models are also compared to each other and appropriate experimental data to determine which model is most likely to accurately describe PVD coating deposition processes. The Navier-Stokes solvers are expected to yield backflow across the majority of realistic inlet conditions, making their physics unrealistic for PVD flow fields. A DSMC with improved collision model may yield an accurate model, but additional research will first need to be completed to accurately describe the complex intermolecular forces of metals and ceramics. Overall, a hybrid CFD-DSMC solver with an improved equation of state for evaporated PVD materials is recommended to model PVD flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in developing a detailed understanding of jet plume aerodynamics has increased significantly in recent years, for both civil (noise reduction) and military (Infra-Red signature modelling) aerospace applications. Such flows are critically dependent on turbulence modelling of the jet plume shear layer mixing. Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) CFD tends to overpredict while Large Eddy Simulation (LES) CFD underpredicts potential core length. Difficulties in LES begin with the challenge of providing accurate resolution of thin turbulent boundary layers at nozzle exit. Providing physically meaningful 3D unsteady LES inlet conditions is a challenge in nozzle flows since turbulence at nozzle inlet experiences relaminarisation, which determines the boundary layer state at nozzle exit. The present thesis addresses these challenges by developing and validating against benchmark measurements an LES approach for nozzle/plume flows based on an advanced inlet condition treatment and an improved level of Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS) modelling. A technique for synthetic inlet condition generation based on a rescaling/recycling method (R2M) for LES predictions of nozzle flows has been applied and validated in the present work. Results reveal the benefits of this method such that self-consistent, correlated turbulent structures were sustained throughout the high acceleration region associated with nozzle convergence, with the turbulence anisotropy developing in the expected manner. The LES results for velocity profile shape at nozzle exit are better than low Re RANS predictions. Use of the Smagorinsky SGS closure produced level of turbulence energy at nozzle exit significantly lesser than measured. A recently proposed SGS model by Piomelli and Guerts (PGSGS) that defines the SGS length scale based on local turbulence quantities using a mesh independent formulation was also applied to the nozzle flow test case with significant improvement in the turbulence energy development through the nozzle. The LES method is applied to a supersonic jet discharging from a rectangular convergentdivergent nozzle. Results show that the R2M technique was able to generate realistic turbulence conditions at nozzle inlet that were consistent with available measured data. Using a carefully designed mesh and the advanced PGSGS model, turbulent structures were sustained through the nozzle, enabling good prediction of the nozzle exit boundary layer state and near field development. The improved capture of shear layer turbulence enabled better predictions of shear layer growth, leading to improved capture of shock cell behaviour and potential core length.
