Book excerpt: These proceedings consist of an overview of the in situ mining research currently being carried out by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers emphasize two general aspects of the in situ mining method: the environment and productivity. Both areas are extremely important, particularly because in situ leach mining is a relatively new mining method from a commercial point of view. Topics covered include the restoration of ground water, the selection of lixiviants, in situ mining of commodities other than uranium, in situ mining costs, the application of resistance measurements to in situ mining, an acid leach mining case history, and the use of branched boreholes for in situ mining. A bibliography of Bureau of Mines publications on in situ mining is appended.

Book excerpt: Bridging Scales in Modelling and Simulation of Reacting Flows, Part B, Volume 53, presents key methods used to bridge scales in the simulation of reacting multiphase flows. It looks at the different aspects of such flows (transport phenomena, reactions) and includes illustrations of the methods on a variety of applications, along with the contribution of key groups in the field. Sections in this new release include multi-scale methods for fluidized bed reactors, a discussion of advances in coarse-grained discrete particle methods with industrial applications, and spatial filtering for scale bridging and its application to transport in dense bidisperse particle beds, and more. - Contains reviews by leading authorities in their respective areas - Presents up-to-date reviews of the latest techniques in the modeling of catalytic processes - Includes a broad mix of US and European authors, as well as academic, industrial and research institute perspectives - Provides discussions on the connections between computation and experimental methods

Book excerpt: Open system behavior is predicated on a fundamental relationship between the timescale over which mass is transported and the timescale over which it is chemically transformed. This relationship describes the basis for the multidisciplinary field of reactive transport (RT). In the 20 years since publication of Review in Mineralogy and Geochemistry volume 34: Reactive Transport in Porous Media, RT principles have expanded beyond early applications largely based in contaminant hydrology to become broadly utilized throughout the Earth Sciences. RT is now employed to address a wide variety of natural and engineered systems across diverse spatial and temporal scales, in tandem with advances in computational capability, quantitative imaging and reactive interface characterization techniques. The present volume reviews the diversity of reactive transport applications developed over the past 20 years, ranging from the understanding of basic processes at the nano- to micrometer scale to the prediction of Earth global cycling processes at the watershed scale. Key areas of RT development are highlighted to continue advancing our capabilities to predict mass and energy transfer in natural and engineered systems.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This book offers a wealth of information on the rapidly expanding field of solution mining: yhe extraction of materials from the earth by leaching and fluid recovery. This is an introductory text for students and professional engineers that is comprehensive and emphases current practice and theory. Percolation leaching of fragmented ground is covered, as well as true and modified in situ teaching. Solution mining of gold, copper and uranium ores, several slats extracted from evaporates and brines, and sulfur are discussed. Mineral teaching chemistry and kinetics, hydrology (including flow equations for various wellfields and other fluid recovery systems), environmental containment and solution mining simulation models are also included.

This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades, continuum mechanics of porous materials has achieved great attention, since it allows for the consideration of the volumetrically coupled behaviour of the solid matrix deformation and the pore-fluid flow. Naturally, applications of porous media models range from civil and environmental engineering, where, e. g. , geote- nical problems like the consolidation problem are of great interest, via mechanical engineering, where, e. g. , the description of sinter materials or polymeric and metallic foams is a typical problem, to chemical and biomechanical engineering, where, e. g. , the complex structure of l- ing tissues is studied. Although these applications are principally very different, they basically fall into the category of multiphase materials, which can be described, on the macroscale, within the framework of the well-founded Theory of Porous Media (TPM). With the increasing power of computer hardware together with the rapidly decreasing computational costs, numerical solutions of complex coupled problems became possible and have been seriously investigated. However, since the quality of the numerical solutions strongly depends on the quality of the underlying physical model together with the experimental and mathematical possibilities to successfully determine realistic material parameters, a successful treatment of porous materials requires a joint consideration of continuum mechanics, experimental mechanics and numerical methods. In addition, micromechanical - vestigations and homogenization techniques are very helpful to increase the phenomenological understanding of such media.
