Book excerpt: The subject of earth pressure is one of the oldest and most extensive chapters in soil mechanics and foundation engineering and is one of the pillars of structural engineering. First the development of earth pressure theory is comprehensively described. The descriptions range from the first approaches to the determination of earth pressure through continuum mechanical earth pressure models to the integration of earth pressure research into the disciplinary structure of geotechnics. The main part of the book comprises a selection of current calculation basics. The aim is to provide a collection of working instructions for foundation and structural engineers in construction companies, consultants and in building supervision as well as students. In order to further theoretical understanding, the essential basics of the determination of earth pressure are first presented. Then the most important processes for active and passive earth pressure and at-rest earth pressure for practical application are dealt with, with spatial effects also being taken into account. The book sets out to provide brief information about rarely encountered questions with references to further literature. In recent years, the dependency of earth pressure on displacement has been paid ever more attention. This applies not just to the passive but also to the active case. Questions are repeatedly passed to the DIN committee "calculation processes". A selection of these is dealt with in the commentary to DIN 4085, which came out in September 2018. The history of earth pressure theory is supplemented by 40 selected short biographies of scientists and practical engineers, who have taken up the subject and further developed it over the years. The book also has two appendices with terms, formula symbols and indices as well as earth pressure tables.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors discuss testing of ballast, including the strength, deformation and degradation aspects of fresh and recycled ballast under monotonic and cyclic loading. The effectiveness of geosynthetics in stabilising recycled ballast has also been examined. A new stress-strain constitutive model for ballast incorporating particle breakage is presented. Finally, a new range of particle gradations, balancing the strength and permeability requirements, has been proposed for future rail tracks. This book is intended as a reference text for final year civil engineering students and postgraduates, and for practicing railway engineers with the task of modernizing existing designs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. We begin by giving a simple example of a partial differential inequality that occurs in an elementary physics problem. We consider a fluid with pressure u(x, t) at the point x at the instant t that 3 occupies a region Q oflR bounded by a membrane r of negligible thickness that, however, is semi-permeable, i. e., a membrane that permits the fluid to enter Q freely but that prevents all outflow of fluid. One can prove then (cf. the details in Chapter 1, Section 2.2.1) that au (aZu azu aZu) (1) in Q, t>o, -a - du = g du = -a z + -a z + -a z t Xl X X3 z l g a given function, with boundary conditions in the form of inequalities u(X,t»o => au(x,t)/an=O, XEr, (2) u(x,t)=o => au(x,t)/an?:O, XEr, to which is added the initial condition (3) u(x,O)=uo(x). We note that conditions (2) are non linear; they imply that, at each fixed instant t, there exist on r two regions r~ and n where u(x, t) =0 and au (x, t)/an = 0, respectively. These regions are not prescribed; thus we deal with a "free boundary" problem.

Book excerpt: In their 1909 publication Théorie des corps déformables, Eugène and François Cosserat made a historic contribution to materials science by establishing the fundamental principles of the mechanics of generalized continua. The chapters collected in this volume showcase the many areas of continuum mechanics that grew out of the foundational work of the Cosserat brothers. The included contributions provide a detailed survey of the most recent theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics and can serve as a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics: Mathematical Methods for Wave Phenomena focuses on the methods of applied mathematics, including equations, wave fronts, boundary value problems, and scattering problems. The publication initially ponders on first-order partial differential equations, Dirac delta function, Fourier transforms, asymptotics, and second-order partial differential equations. Discussions focus on prototype second-order equations, asymptotic expansions, asymptotic expansions of Fourier integrals with monotonic phase, method of stationary phase, propagation of wave fronts, and variable index of refraction. The text then examines wave equation in one space dimension, as well as initial boundary value problems, characteristics for the wave equation in one space dimension, and asymptotic solution of the Klein-Gordon equation. The manuscript offers information on wave equation in two and three dimensions and Helmholtz equation and other elliptic equations. Topics include energy integral, domain of dependence, and uniqueness, scattering problems, Green's functions, and problems in unbounded domains and the Sommerfeld radiation condition. The asymptotic techniques for direct scattering problems and the inverse methods for reflector imaging are also elaborated. The text is a dependable reference for computer science experts and mathematicians pursuing studies on the mathematical methods of wave phenomena.

Book excerpt: Following the structure of previous editions, Volume 1 of this Sixth Edition proceeds through four individual chapters on geosynthetics, geotextiles, geogrids and geonets. Volume 2 continues with geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, geofoam and geocomposites. The two volumes must accompany one another. All are polymeric materials used for myriad applications in geotechnical, geoenvironmental, transportation, hydraulic and private development applications. The technology has become a worldwide enterprise with approximate $5B material sales in the 35-years since first being introduced. In addition to describing and illustrating the various materials; the most important test methods and design examples are included as pertains to specific application areas. This latest edition differs from previous ones in that sustainability is addressed throughout, new material variations are presented, new applications are included and references are updated accordingly. Each chapter includes problems for which a solutions manual is available.
