To reduce high training costs and to improve the effectiveness of training, training system developers often use sophisticated training media such as, simulators, videodisks, and computer-based instruction. The designers of these training media are continually striving to provide maximum training effectiveness at minimum cost. Although literature is available on the implementation and use of specific training media, there is little guidance on a major feature that is central to these media. All of these media present the learner with an interactive simulation of the real world. Effective training system design can be facilitated if the requirements of the real-world task are properly included in training. A conceptual bridge is necessary to link these actual task requirements to the characteristics of the training system. This book provides such a conceptual bridge. The need for improved training is critical in the area of equipment operation, maintenance, and decision making tasks. For example, the importance of improved operator training in the nuclear power industry has become paramount since the Three Mile Island accident and the more serious accident at the Chernobyl reactor in the U. S. S. R. Technology, such as the availability and power of computers,offers a wider variety of training options, but requires additional training system design decisions.

Book excerpt: Recent work on the analysis of learners' representations of complex physical systems was reviewed. These results were used to introduce the concept of mental models, which, on one hand, are an important part of what must be considered in designing simulation. On the other hand, faulty mental models of what simulators should be like ignore almost everything known about how to teach people complicated tasks. It is suggested that design specifications for training simulators should include features intended to promote learning and understanding. Sometimes it may be necessary to violate physical and temporal fidelity to promote learning. This is not a new idea, but it is apparent that, in the acquisition of training devices for new weapon systems, little or no attention is paid to this advice. Recommendations include a development effort to operationalize guidelines for specifying and designing instructional task fidelity, as well as to promote and monitor their use. Furthermore, fidelity is one of the main cost-drives of any model or simulation development. Today simulation systems play an increasingly important role in our society, which are rapidly becoming the primary tool for crucial decision-making processes during engineering design, test and evaluation of new systems, even safety-critical systems, and in training of people operating these systems. With this increasing reliance on simulation results it is more than ever important to know how well a simulation corresponds to reality in order to ascertain that the risks involved in using the simulation results are within acceptable limits. Despite these observations and the enormous advancements in simulation hardware and software, the ability to characterize, qualify and quantify the level of simulation fidelity is still a largely uncultivated area. An area in which there exist many incomplete, inconsistent and widely scattered views, concepts and approaches to fidelity. What is primarily lacking is the absence of a systematic and general applicable simulation fidelity assessment methodology, which is based on a sound unifying theory for fidelity and associated practices. This thesis tries to fill this void by the analysis, extension and integration of existing simulation fidelity approaches into a single unified fidelity theory and practice. All this is done from a general simulation system life cycle perspective, not limited by any specific application or problem domain aspects.
