Book excerpt: LA TRANSITION A LA TURBULENCE D'ECOULEMENTS EN GEOMETRIE COMPLEXE EST ETUDIEE PAR SIMULATION NUMERIQUE COMPRESSIBLE BIDIMENSIONNELLE ET TRIDIMENSIONNELLE. ON PRESENTE UNE SIMULATION DES GRANDES ECHELLES D'UN JET ROND D'AIR, COMPAREE A UNE EXPERIENCE EN LABORATOIRE ET A UNE AUTRE SIMULATION NUMERIQUE INCOMPRESSIBLE. CETTE COMPARAISON NOUS A PERMIS DE VALIDER NOTRE OUTIL NUMERIQUE. NOUS MONTRONS UN BON ACCORD ENTRE LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX ET NOTRE SIMULATION NUMERIQUE EN ZONE TRANSITIONNELLE. ON APPLIQUE NOTRE OUTIL NUMERIQUE A UNE GEOMETRIE COMPLEXE ET INDUSTRIELLE: L'ENTREE D'AIR EN INCIDENCE. CETTE ETUDE EST EFFECTUEE AVEC UN CODE A GESTION MULTI-DOMAINE DES TRANSFERTS D'INFORMATIONS PAR METHODE AUX CARACTERISTIQUES. LES RESULTATS SONT COMPARES A CEUX D'UNE EXPERIENCE FAITE AU CEAT DE POITIERS. NOUS AVONS MIS EN EVIDENCE LES TOURBILLONS DE KELVIN-HELMHOLTZ, AINSI QUE LES TOURBILLONS LONGITUDINAUX, RESPONSABLES DES FLUCTUATIONS DE PRESSION AU NIVEAU DU PREMIER ETAGE DU COMPRESSEUR. ENFIN, ON A REPRODUIT UNE EXPERIENCE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIQUE FAITE AU LABORATOIRE MADYLAM, EN GEOMETRIE BIDIMENSIONNELLE RONDE. L'INFLUENCE DU CHAMP MAGNETIQUE SUR UN ECOULEMENT DE MERCURE SOUMIS AUX FORCES DE LAPLACE CREE UN CISAILLEMENT AU NIVEAU DE L'ELECTRODE. ON PRESENTE UNE EVOLUTION TEMPORELLE DE LA VORTICITE ET DE LA PRESSION, AINSI QUE LES STATISTIQUES OBTENUES EN REGIME PERMANENT. NOUS MONTRONS DES RESULTATS QUALITATIFS SATISFAISANTS, MAIS PAR CONTRE SUR LES STATISTIQUES, NOUS SURESTIMONS LES VALEURS MOYENNES ET FLUCTUANTES. NOUS MONTRONS QUE LES CARACTERISTIQUES DE L'ECOULEMENT NE SONT PAS BIDIMENSIONNELLES, MAIS DOIVENT ETRE TRIDIMENSIONNELLES

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfaces are present in most fluid mechanics problems. They not only denote phase separations and boundary conditions, but also thin flames and discontinuity waves. Fluid Mechanics at Interfaces 2 examines cases that involve one-dimensional or bi-dimensional manifolds, not only in gaseous and liquid physical states but also in subcritical fluids and in single- and multi-phase systems that may be pure or mixed. Chapter 1 addresses certain aspects of turbulence in discrete mechanics, briefly describing the physical model associated with discrete primal and dual geometric topologies before focusing on channel flow simulations at turbulence-inducing Reynolds numbers. Chapter 2 centers on atomization in an accelerating domain. In one case, an initial Kelvin–Helmholtz instability generates an acceleration field, in turn creating a Rayleigh–Taylor instability which ultimately determines the size of the droplets formed. Chapter 3 explores numerical studies of pipes with sudden contraction using OpenFOAM, and focuses on modeling that will be useful for engines and automobiles. Chapters 4 and 5 study the evaporation of droplets that are subject to high-frequency perturbations, a possible cause of instabilities in injection engines. The Heidmann model, which replaces the droplets in motion in a combustion chamber with a single continuously-fed droplet, is made more complex by considering the finite conduction heat transfer phenomenon. Finally, Chapter 6 is devoted to a study of the rotor blade surface of a Savonius wind turbine, considering both a non-stationary and a three-dimensional flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Turbulence VII contains an overview of the state of turbulence research with some bias towards work done in Europe. It represents an almost complete collection of the invited and contributed papers delivered at the Seventh European Turbulence Conference, sponsored by EUROMECH and ERCOFTAC and organized by the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur. New high-Reynolds number experiments combined with new techniques of imaging, non-intrusive probing, processing and simulation provide high-quality data which put significant constraints on possible theories. For the first time, it has been shown, for a class of passive scalar problems, why dimensional analysis sometimes gives the wrong answers and how anomalous intermittency corrections can be calculated from first principles. The volume is thus geared towards specialists in the area of flow turbulence who could not attend the conference as well as anybody interested in this rapidly moving field.
