Book excerpt: This study was the first phase of a program designed to prepare a handbook of estimation methods for the environmentally-important physicochemical properties of organic chemicals. A review of environmental fate models, hazard ranking schemes, federal regulations and other material led first to the identification of about 50 physicochemical properties of interest. Those properties that are estimable with available methods were then identified; these properties will be included in the handbook to be prepared in the next phase. (Author).

Book excerpt: For scientists and engineers seeking to estimate properties of compounds, this time-saving Handbook brings together in one compact volume a vast array of property estimation methods from more than 2,700 published sources for calculating many properties of organic compounds. The property estimation techniques detailed in the Handbook have been chosen for their broad applicability and practical value. The discussion of each estimating technique includes a clear exposition of the technique, including classes of compounds for which it is applicable and critical consideration of its strengths and weaknesses, as well as many worked-out examples demonstrating the technique.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the four-year program undertaken to evaluate, and provide information, estimation methods for environmentally-important properties of organic chemicals. The work was conducted in four phases. Phase 1 was a problem definition study to identify those physicochemical properties that are most needed for assessments for a chemical's environmental fate and transport, and to determine which of these properties were estimable. In Phase 2, the available estimation methods for 26 properties were evaluated and described in a 1000-page handbook. Clear recommendations and instructions were provided for the use of all methods. Phase 3 included several modifications to the Phase 2 handbook to facilitate commercial publication. No formal government report was published for the Phase 3 work. In Phase 4, an interactive computer system (CHEMEST) incorporating several property estimation methods from the handbook was designed and implemented.

Book excerpt: Transport and transformation processes are key for determining how humans and other organisms are exposed to chemicals. These processes are largely controlled by the chemicals’ physical-chemical properties. This new edition of the Handbook of Physical-Chemical Properties and Environmental Fate for Organic Chemicals is a comprehensive series in four volumes that serves as a reference source for environmentally relevant physical-chemical property data of numerous groups of chemical substances. The handbook contains physical-chemical property data from peer-reviewed journals and other valuable sources on over 1200 chemicals of environmental concern. The handbook contains new data on the temperature dependence of selected physical-chemical properties, which allows scientists and engineers to perform better chemical assessments for climatic conditions outside the 20–25-degree range for which property values are generally reported. This second edition of the Handbook of Physical-Chemical Properties and Environmental Fate for Organic Chemicals is an essential reference for university libraries, regulatory agencies, consultants, and industry professionals, particularly those concerned with chemical synthesis, emissions, fate, persistence, long-range transport, bioaccumulation, exposure, and biological effects of chemicals in the environment. This resource is also available on CD-ROM

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochar is the carbon-rich product when biomass (such as wood, manure or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its stability in soil and superior nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. This book is the first to synthesize the expanding research literature on this topic. The book's interdisciplinary approach, which covers engineering, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, economics and policy, is a vital tool at this stage of biochar technology development. This comprehensive overview of current knowledge will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and professionals in a wide range of disciplines.
