Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Semantics has become a popular tool among programming language researchers for specifying many aspects of programming languages. However, due to the lack of practical tools for implementation, the natural semantics formalism has so far largely been limited to theoretical applications. This book introduces the rational meta-language RML as a practical language for natural semantics specifications. The main part of the work is devoted to the problem of compiling natural semantics, actually RML, into highly efficient code. For this purpose, an effective compilation strategy for RML is developed and implemented in the rml2c compiler. This compiler ultimately produces low-level C code. Benchmarking results show that rml2c-produced code is much faster than code resulting from compilers based on alternative implementation approaches.

Book excerpt: The Tenth International Conference on Logic Programming, sponsored by the Association for Logic Programming, is a major forum for presentations of research, applications, and implementations in this important area of computer science. Logic programming is one of the most promising steps toward declarative programming and forms the theoretical basis of the programming language Prolog and it svarious extensions. Logic programming is also fundamental to work in artificial intelligence, where it has been used for nonmonotonic and commonsense reasoning, expert systems implementation, deductive databases, and applications such as computer-aided manufacturing.David S. Warren is Professor of Computer Science at the State University of New York, Stony Brook.Topics covered: Theory and Foundations. Programming Methodologies and Tools. Meta and Higher-order Programming. Parallelism. Concurrency. Deductive Databases. Implementations and Architectures. Applications. Artificial Intelligence. Constraints. Partial Deduction. Bottom-Up Evaluation. Compilation Techniques.

Mosses on the occasion of his 60th birthday, includes 17 invited chapters by many of Peter's coauthors, collaborators, close colleagues, and former students. Peter D. Mosses is known for his many contributions in the area of formal program semantics. In particular he developed action semantics, a combination of denotational, operational and algebraic semantics. The presentations - given on a symposium in his honor in Udine, Italy, on September 10, 2009 - were on subjects related to Peter's many technical contributions and they were a tribute to his lasting impact on the field. Topics addressed by the papers are action semantics, security policy design, colored petri nets, order-sorted parameterization and induction, object-oriented action semantics, structural operational semantics, model transformations, the scheme programming language, type checking, action algebras, and denotational semantics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of reprints describes a unified treatment of semantics, covering a wide range of notions in parallel languages. Included are several foundational and introductory papers developing the methodology of metric semantics, studies on the comparative semantics of parallel object-oriented and logic programming, and papers on full abstraction and transition system specifications. In addition, links with process algebra and the theory of domain equations are established. Throughout, a uniform proof technique is used to relate operational and denotational models. The approach is flexible in that both linear time, branching time (or bisimulation) and intermediate models can be handled, as well as schematic and interpreted elementary actions. The reprints are preceded by an extensive introduction surveying related work on metric semantics.

Book excerpt: "This is an in-depth analysis of the complexities and practical advantages of several approaches to logic program development. The authors highlight state-of-the-art research, illustrating and clarifying each concept by example. Exercises and a general tutorial style give the book its practical perspective. It addresses the problems which may be encountered in the complicated process of writing a logic program. A structured discussion of each facet of this task covers, broadly, the synthesis, derivation and analysis of a logic program, as well as the necessary underlying theoretical foundations."--Page 4 de la couverture.

Book excerpt: A major strategy to reduce transport congestion and other social costs of transport is to ensure that travellers make the best decisions, based on real time information. A wide range of technological systems have been developed to provide this information, but little is known about how travellers actually respond to it. This book offers an overview of various transport telematics options and provides an appropriate methodological framework, followed by a presentation of results from actual applications of these telematics systems from a range of European countries in various transport sectors. The empirical results are supplemented by analytical models and geographic information systems representations with a view on generalizing these findings and identifying the key parameters which determine user response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its conception nearly 20 years ago, Logic Programming - the idea of using logic as a programming language - has been developed to the point where it now plays an important role in areas such as database theory, artificial intelligence and software engineering. However, there are still many challenging research issues to be addressed and the UK branch of the Association for Logic Programming was set up to provide a forum where the flourishing research community could discuss important issues of Logic Programming which were often by-passed at the large international conferences. This volume contains the twelve papers which were presented at the ALPUK's 3rd conference which was held in Edinburgh, 10-12 April 1991. The aim of the conference was to give a broad but detailed technical insight into the work currently being done in this field, both in the UK and by researchers as far afield as Canada and Bulgaria. The breadth of interest in this area of Computer Science is reflected in the range of the papers which cover - amongst other areas - massively parallel implementation, constraint logic programming, circuit modelling, algebraic proof of program properties, deductive databases, specialised editors and standardisation. The resulting volume gives a good overview of the current progress being made in the field and will be of interest to researchers and students of any aspects of logic programming, parallel computing or database techniques and management.
