Book excerpt: The monochrome—a single-color work of art—is highly ambiguous. For some it epitomizes purity and is art reduced to its essence. For others it is just a stunt, the proverbial emperor’s new clothes. Why are monochrome works both so admired and such an easy target of scorn? Why does a monochrome look so simple and yet is so challenging to comprehend? And what is it that drives artists to create such works? In this illuminating book, Simon Morley unpacks the meanings of the monochrome as it has developed internationally over the twentieth century to today. In doing so, he also explores how artists have understood what they make, how critics variously interpret it, and how art is encountered by viewers.

Book excerpt: This book brings together every one of the 359 ink drawings created by Simon Bull during the first COVID 19 lockdown in 2020. There are herons, quail, owls, eagles, hummingbirds, flycatchers, sparrows, and a host of others produced by the artist's imagination. Painted to order and given away as part of the project, each one is unique. Depending on the artist's mood on any given day, the birds are depicted in groups, pairs, or in splendid isolation. When the clouds of the COVID-19 Pandemic finally broke into the storm that would put the world into lockdown, Simon Bull responded by making art. Art that reflected the moment. When everyone was sheltering in place, he offered to paint a unique ink and brush rendering of a bird for all who asked - at no charge. Each unique rendering would be free, free as a bird. It was the artist's way of sharing love and hope with the world as uncertainty and fear held us all in its grip. The idea was simple. A video promoting the offer was made and those responding were directed to a website where they could order up to nine studies per household. There was a modest handling charge and options to upgrade their gift with certificates of authenticity, frames etc, but at all times, the art itself remained free. When the offer went live, the studio was inundated with orders which took several months to complete. The whole collection has now been gathered together in this volume which serves as a catalog and record of an extraordinary event.

Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe, the heartwarming first installment in the Lowcountry Summer trilogy, a poignant series following three half-sisters and their grandmother. Three granddaughters. Three months. One summer house. In this enchanting trilogy set on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe captures the complex relationships between Dora, Carson, and Harper, three half-sisters scattered across the country—and a grandmother determined to help them rediscover their family bonds. For years, Carson Muir has drifted, never really settling, certain only that a life without the ocean is a life half lived. Adrift and penniless in California, Carson is the first to return to Sea Breeze, wondering where things went wrong…until the sea she loves brings her a minor miracle. Her astonishing bond with a dolphin helps Carson renew her relationships with her sisters and face the haunting memories of her ill-fated father. As the rhythms of the island open her heart, Carson begins to imagine the next steps toward her future. In this heartwarming novel, three sisters discover the true treasures Sea Breeze offers as surprising truths are revealed, mistakes forgiven, and precious connections made that will endure long beyond one summer.

Book excerpt: An icon of World War I aerial combat, the Sopwith Camel was a superb dogfighter in the hands of a pilot who could master its vicious idiosyncrasies. The first British fighter to be armed with twin machine guns, the Camel packed a considerable punch and was highly successful, notching up a considerable number of aerial victories. The Camel was a remarkable aircraft, and one that could perform in a variety of roles, including as a ground strafer, a night fighter and a carrier-based fighter. As newer, higher performance aircraft types were introduced and began to eclipse it, the dominance of the Camel declined and losses mounted. Nevertheless, Camels appeared over battlefields throughout the war and beyond, notably in the Russian Civil War.
