Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon and Garfunkel were one of the greatest acts of the sixties, whose output formed an almost unbroken series of bestselling hits. With Paul Simon's brilliant songs and Art Garfunkel's voice, the duo produced the flawless and awe-inspiring harmony that thrilled a generation. This in-depth biography follows their careers from their childhood in Queens and their early days as 'Tom and Gerry', which produced the hit single 'Hey Schoolgirl', to their role in the evolving folk scene in the sixties. Victoria Kingston traces Paul Simon's famous tour of one night stands in the north of England, talking to the people who hired him for (pound)10 a night and finding fresh insights into this important period of his life. Fame came unexpectedly for the duo, catapulting them unprepared from relative obscurity to chart-topping success. While they went on to produce such classic songs as 'The Boxer', 'The Sound of Silence' and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', the pressure of stardom ironically hastened the end of their partnership and almost ruined their friendship. Victoria Kingston analyses the characters of the two men, showing how they initially complemented each other but how, in the end, Paul Simon was unable to work in tandem with Art.

Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the life of beloved American music icon, Paul Simon, by the bestselling rock biographer Peter Ames Carlin To have been alive during the last sixty years is to have lived with the music of Paul Simon. The boy from Queens scored his first hit record in 1957, just months after Elvis Presley ignited the rock era. As the songwriting half of Simon & Garfunkel, his work helped define the youth movement of the '60s. On his own in the '70s, Simon made radio-dominating hits. He kicked off the '80s by reuniting with Garfunkel to perform for half a million New Yorkers in Central Park. Five years later, Simon’s album “Graceland” sold millions and spurred an international political controversy. And it doesn’t stop there. The grandchild of Jewish emigrants from Galicia in the Austro-Hungarian empire, the 75-year-old singer-songwriter has not only sold more than 100 million records, won 15 Grammy awards and been installed into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice, but has also animated the meaning—and flexibility—of personal and cultural identity in a rapidly shrinking world. Simon has also lived one of the most vibrant lives of modern times; a story replete with tales of Carrie Fisher, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Woody Allen, Shelley Duvall, Nelson Mandela, drugs, depression, marriage, divorce, and more. A life story with the scope and power of an epic novel, Carlin’s Homeward Bound is the first major biography of one of the most influential popular artists in American history.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed music writer Robert Hilburn’s “epic” and “definitive” (Rolling Stone) biography of music icon Paul Simon, written with Simon’s full participation—but without his editorial control—that “reminds us how titanic this musician is” (The Washington Post). For more than fifty years, Paul Simon has spoken to us in songs about alienation, doubt, resilience, and empathy in ways that have established him as one of the most beloved artists in American pop music history. Songs like “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Still Crazy After All These Years,” and “Graceland” have moved beyond the sales charts and into our cultural consciousness. But Simon is a deeply private person who has said he will not write an autobiography or talk to biographers. Finally, however, he has opened up for Robert Hilburn—for more than one hundred hours of interviews—in this “brilliant and entertaining portrait of Simon that will likely be the definitive biography” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Over the course of three years, Hilburn conducted in-depth interviews with scores of Paul Simon’s friends, family, colleagues, and others—including ex-wives Carrie Fisher and Peggy Harper, who spoke for the first time—and even penetrated the inner circle of Simon’s long-reclusive muse, Kathy Chitty. The result is a deeply human account of the challenges and sacrifices of a life in music at the highest level. In the process, Hilburn documents Simon’s search for artistry and his constant struggle to protect that artistry against distractions—fame, marriage, divorce, drugs, record company interference, rejection, and insecurity—that have derailed so many great pop figures. “As engaging as a lively American tune” (People), Paul Simon is a “straight-shooting tour de force…that does thorough justice to this American prophet and pop star” (USA TODAY, four out of four stars). “Read it if you like Simon; read it if you want to discover how talent unfolds itself” (Stephen King).

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller Named "22 Essential Cookbooks for Every Kitchen" by SeriousEats.com Named "25 Favorite Cookbooks of All Time" by Christopher Kimball Named "Best Cookbooks Of 2016" by Chicago Tribune, BBC, Wired, Epicurious, Leite's Culinaria Named "100 Best Cookbooks of All Time" by Southern Living Magazine For succulent results every time, nothing is more crucial than understanding the science behind the interaction of food, fire, heat, and smoke. This is the definitive guide to the concepts, methods, equipment, and accessories of barbecue and grilling. The founder and editor of the world's most popular BBQ and grilling website, AmazingRibs.com, “Meathead” Goldwyn applies the latest research to backyard cooking and 118 thoroughly tested recipes. He explains why dry brining is better than wet brining; how marinades really work; why rubs shouldn't have salt in them; how heat and temperature differ; the importance of digital thermometers; why searing doesn't seal in juices; how salt penetrates but spices don't; when charcoal beats gas and when gas beats charcoal; how to calibrate and tune a grill or smoker; how to keep fish from sticking; cooking with logs; the strengths and weaknesses of the new pellet cookers; tricks for rotisserie cooking; why cooking whole animals is a bad idea, which grill grates are best;and why beer-can chicken is a waste of good beer and nowhere close to the best way to cook a bird. He shatters the myths that stand in the way of perfection. Busted misconceptions include: • Myth: Bring meat to room temperature before cooking. Busted! Cold meat attracts smoke better. • Myth: Soak wood before using it. Busted! Soaking produces smoke that doesn't taste as good as dry fast-burning wood. • Myth: Bone-in steaks taste better. Busted! The calcium walls of bone have no taste and they just slow cooking. • Myth: You should sear first, then cook. Busted! Actually, that overcooks the meat. Cooking at a low temperature first and searing at the end produces evenly cooked meat. Lavishly designed with hundreds of illustrations and full-color photos by the author, this book contains all the sure-fire recipes for traditional American favorites and many more outside-the-box creations. You'll get recipes for all the great regional barbecue sauces; rubs for meats and vegetables; Last Meal Ribs, Simon & Garfunkel Chicken; Schmancy Smoked Salmon; The Ultimate Turkey; Texas Brisket; Perfect Pulled Pork; Sweet & Sour Pork with Mumbo Sauce; Whole Hog; Steakhouse Steaks; Diner Burgers; Prime Rib; Brazilian Short Ribs; Rack Of Lamb Lollipops; Huli-Huli Chicken; Smoked Trout Florida Mullet –Style; Baja Fish Tacos; Lobster, and many more.

"Slow down, you move too fast You got to make the mornin' last Just kicking down the cobblestones Lookin' for fun and feelin' groovy..." The 59th Street Bridge Song is a lively picture book based on legendary songwriter Paul Simon's classic hit, created when he was one half of the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. The song first appeared on their 1966 album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. In the US, the album peaked at #4 on Billboard's weekly Top 200 albums chart, and eventually went on to sell over three million copies in the US. With song lyrics by Simon and illustrations by Keith Henry Brown, this picture book follows a rabbit cycling through town, going about his day, and pausing to admire the "groovy" and lovable aspects of his surroundings. The 59th Street Bridge Song provides parents a perfect vehicle to teach kids an appreciation of life's little gifts.

Book excerpt: Before they emerged as Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed and recorded as Tom and Jerry, after the cat and mouse duo of animated comedy. The pair met at school in Queens, New York, in 1953 and shared an interest in folk revival music as it entered the popular consciousness. Inspired by the Everly Brothers, who merged country with rock and roll, young Paul and Art endeavored to write songs and arrange vocal harmonies. In 1957, they covered Everly Brothers’ “Hey, Schoolgirl” for Big Records when they were only 15 years old. “Hey, Schoolgirl in the second row / The teacher’s lookin’ over / So I got to whisper way down low,” the song goes. Tom and Jerry reached number 49 on the pop chart with that song. Another seven years went by before the pair recorded again. When Simon was working for a publisher to sell songs for recording, he introduced some of his own songs for consideration. He and Garfunkel auditioned, and, beyond expectation, Columbia Records offered them a recording deal. In 1964 they released Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.
