This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver holds three world records; it has the lowest contact resistance, highest electrical conductivity and the best thermal conductivity of all metals. The element's physical strength, brilliance and malleability leads to its many uses from electronics to optical applications.A new 'silver rush' has occurred following the recent discovery that silver, when divided to form particles at the nano scale, can take on new properties. Meanwhile, there has been an increase in regulations against environmental pollution of silver ions toxicity, which have caused numerous diseases and disorders in the marine, microbial, invertebrate and vertebrate community (including humans). Both of which have led to a great interest in silver recovery for both environmental toxicity and an economic point of view.Comprised of ten chapters, this book draws attention to the most advance technologies in silver recovery and recycling from various spent sources, which will appeal to research scientists and metallurgists. The state of the art in recovery of silver from different sources by hydrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processing and varieties of leaching, cementing, reducing agents, adsorbents, and bio-sorbents are highlighted in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of the present invention is directed to the recovery of silver from spent photographic fixer solutions and for providing an effluent essentially silver-free that is suitable for discharge into commercial sewage systems. The present method involves the steps of introducing the spent photographic fixer solution into an alkaline hypochlorite solution. The oxidizing conditions of the alkaline hypochlorite solution are maintained during the addition of the fixer solution so that the silver ion complexing agents of thiosulfate and sulfite ions are effectively destroyed. Hydrazine monohydrate is then added to the oxidizing solution to form a reducing solution to effect the formation of a precipitate of silver which can be readily removed by filtration or decanting. Experimental tests indicate that greater than 99.99% of the original silver in the spent photographic fixer can be efficiently removed by practicing the present method. Also, the chemical and biological oxygen demand of the remaining effluent is significantly reduced so as to permit the discharge thereof into sewage systems at levels in compliance with federal and state environmental standards.

Book Synopsis Development and Application of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery System by : Archie G. Buyers
Download or read book Development and Application of Ion Exchange Silver Recovery System written by Archie G. Buyers and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted on the feasibility and extent of application of the ion exchange process as a method for silver recovery from spent photographic fixer solutions. The study demonstrates the technical feasibility of using ion exchange systems to recover silver from photographic fixer solutions for silver concentrations between 0.05 and 0.5 gm/l. However, ion exchange system operation at or above silver concentrations of 0.5 gm/l appears to negate any cost advantages over the electrolytic recovery systems. In addition, operation at concentrations under 0.05 gm/l requires about 10 times the resin needed at concentrations of 1.0 mg/l. A previously postulated resin-fouling mechanism was supported by experimental exchange data from a series of synthetic spent fixer solutions. Fouling during silver stripping may be caused by the formation of colloidal sulfur and silver sulfide particles with electrostatic charges neutralized by anionic exchange sites of the resin. A re-examination proved that an aqueous sodium acetate prewash of an anionic exchange column is a satisfactory method of preventing resin fouling by inorganic colloids.

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the chemical action of electricity and the production of electricity by chemical reactions. In a world short of energy sources yet long on energy use, electrochemistry is a critical component of the mix necessary to keep the world economies growing. Electrochemistry is involved with such important applications as batteries, fuel cells, corrosion studies, hydrogen energy conversion, and bioelectricity. Research on electrolytes, cells, and electrodes is within the scope of this old but extremely dynamic field. This book details advances in metal electrodeposition.

Book excerpt: Precious Metals 1981 presents the significant role of precious noble metals in various aspects of human life. This book discusses the wide array of uses of precious metals from dental fillings to the manufacturing of air conditioners. Organized into nine parts encompassing 48 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the chemical reducing capability of sodium borohydride for various organic heavy metal applications. This text then examines the general plant operations comprising of heap leaching methods utilized for the recovery of finely dispersed particles of gold and silver. Other chapters consider the refining characteristics of gold alloys containing impurities. This book discusses as well the fundamental principles of major conventional bonding methods used to produce metal clad materials used in jewelry and electrical contact applications. The final chapter deals with the precious and non-precious alloy systems used in Dentistry. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, jewelers, and goldsmiths.
