Book excerpt: The Mikoyan i Gurevich MiG-21 has been built in greater numbers than any other combat aircraft since 1945. It also saw service with more air forces than any other type manufactured over the last 70 years.Locally designated the 'L' (for Lovac or fighter), for more than half a century over 260 MiG-21s in 12 different versions and sub-variants formed the backbone of the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defence Force (JRV i PVO) and later the Serbian Air Force (RV i PVO).Entering service at the peak of the Cold War, the MiG-21 quickly replaced the US-supplied North American F-86E and F-86D Sabres in the Yugoslav inventory. The first version, MiG-21F-13, was followed by the MiG-21PFM in 1967, and MiG-21M/MF in 1970. Serving with the 204th Fighter Regiment, the task of these fighters was the air defence of Belgrade, capital of Yugoslavia.Whenever a new and more advanced variant became available, older types were handed over to other units. This is how the 117th Fighter Regiment came into being, based at the famous underground air base outside the town of Bihac. The Pristina-based 83rd Fighter Regiment followed in 1972.In Tito's Yugoslavia, the MiG-21 was also deployed for strategic reconnaissance. In 1968-1969, the JRV i PVO introduced the MiG-21R to service, which became the primary photo- and electronic reconnaissance platform of the entire military. The importance of the fleet was further increased in 1984, when US-made Fairchild KA-112 LORAP containers were added to their arsenal. The final and most widely used version became the MiG-21bis, delivered to Yugoslavia in the 1977-1983 period. By the time of the dissolution of the country, in 1991-1992, it formed the backbone of the fleet and saw intensive combat service as a fighter-bomber during the conflicts in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of particular interest during this period was the widespread use of diverse ordnance of native and NATO-origins.While operated by the RV i PVO, MiG-21s did not fly any combat sorties during NATO's campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia of 1999 - better known as the 'Kosovo War'. Nevertheless, it was intensively targeted by NATO's air power, resulting in destruction of nearly half the fleet.Although subsequently considered 'obsolete', and operated in continuously declining numbers, the MiG-21bis continued soldiering on with the RV i PVO, and even maintained quick reaction alert duty until late 2015, when officially retired. The final handful of two-seat conversion trainers is still in service as this volume is prepared. The book is based upon the author's extensive research in Serbian and Croatian archives, museums and interviews with veterans that flew this type. Most of the photos in this volume have never been published before.

Book excerpt: Comox Estuary Featured in "The Interlopers" Children's Book by Local Writer/Illustrator Author Marlet Ashley and illustrator Kate Brown are two local newcomers to the valley who were so awed by the Comox Estuary and its waterfowl that they got together to write a series of five children's books collectively titled Revelry On The Estuary. The first story in the collection is titled "The Interlopers" and it is written from the point of view of the avian residents of the estuary. Kate and Marlet drew from Kate's observation of the ducks, swans, herons, and other birds on the water just outside her door in Courtenay. She recorded the various waterfowl on hand-painted mugs, souvenirs she gave away to guests. Kate related the antics of the birds to author Marlet Ashley, and from there, the stories took shape. "The Interlopers" introduces readers to characters such as Erwyn Eagle, Penelope Sandpiper, Gabby Gull, and Henri Heron, among others, who will be featured in stories to be released in the future. These characters engage in antics that touch on camaraderie and adventure and include a subtle philosophical perspective that nature, especially in the Comox Estuary, is important and must be protected.

Book excerpt: This ebook includes a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island! A rip-roaring sequel to Treasure Island—Robert Louis Stevenson’s beloved classic—about two young friends and their high-seas adventure with dangerous pirates and long-lost treasure. It's almost forty years after the events of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island: Jim Hawkins now runs an inn called the Hispaniola on the English coast with his son, Jim, and Long John Silver has returned to England to live in obscurity with his daughter, Natty. Their lives are quiet and unremarkable; their adventures have seemingly ended. But for Jim and Natty, the adventure is just beginning. One night, Natty approaches young Jim with a proposition: return to Treasure Island and find the remaining treasure that their fathers left behind so many years before. As Jim and Natty set sail in their fathers' footsteps, they quickly learn that this journey will not be easy. Immediately, they come up against murderous pirates, long-held grudges, and greed and deception lurking in every corner. And when they arrive on Treasure Island, they find terrible scenes awaiting them—difficulties which require all their wit as well as their courage. Nor does the adventure end there, since they have to sail homeward again... Andrew Motion’s sequel—rollicking, heartfelt, and utterly brilliant—would make Robert Louis Stevenson proud.

Book excerpt: Waterfowling is the most arduous and most romantic of all hunting sports, taking the dedicated fowler out on to windswept estuaries and frozen marshes long before dawn on wild winter mornings. With only a faithful retriever for company, the lone wildfowler experiences a communion with nature that is well nigh impossible in any other setting. At the end of the flight he measures his success not by the size of his bag but by the closeness of his encounter with the wild geese and ducks. In this beautifully written book, Eric Begbie captures the essence of the sport in a selection of personal wildfowling adventures spanning four decades. This publication is adapted from "Fowler in the Wild" by Eric Begbie and highlights the memories of a longshore gunner over almost five decades

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarjan is an Historical Novel that spans twenty-five years and two cultures, as it weaves a tale of the establishment of the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. It follows the lives of two young settler siblings, Sara Jane (Sarjan), William (Willem) and an Aboriginal boy (Yeddi) brought together in tragic circumstances. The adventures of these characters transport the reader from the 1829 arrival of Captain James Stirling and Thomas Peel with the first white settlers, to skirmishes with Aborigines (culminating in the Pinjarra massacre), to South Africa’s Cape Colony and back to the mother country in England, and a detour to the Victorian Goldfields, before returning to Fremantle. Sarjan is a story of pioneering spirit, hardship, adventure, fulfilment, heartaches and love, of the trials faced by those of conflicting cultures, and of the bonding that can occur despite different backgrounds. It has been described as ‘the best book ever read’ and ‘better than Thorn Birds’. Read it and you will understand why.
