Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Silkworms There is a pretty little legend as to the introduction of silk culture into Japan, which, though entirely mythical, is worth relating. There was a certain king of India who, following the fashion of the times, had many wives and a very large family, his favourite wife, however, was, much to his disappointment, for a long time childless. At last a child was born to them, but when the father heard that it was a daughter, instead of the son he had so passionately longed for, his exasperation was unbounded, and he expressed himself in no very guarded terms on the subject. His words were by some busybody reported to the mother of the unfortunate infant, and she was so deeply affected by them, that she soon afterwards died, leaving her husband a prey to the bitterest remorse. So inconsolable, indeed was he, that a few weeks after, he followed his wife to the grave, leaving the baby, Yonan Thsan Silkworm) by name, to the tender mercies of its very numerous step-mothers. Now step-mothers are not unfre quently very undesirable persons to be entrusted with the well being of a helpless orphan, and the present assemblage of ladies was no exception to the rule. They argued, rightly or wrongly, that this latest arrival would considerably interfere with the ambitious projects they had been forming for their own progeny, and that therefore it would really be an excellent thing if the little maiden could be comfortably and quietly disposed of. Having once made up their minds to this course, they did not take long to carry out their intention, but, in the attempt, they met with unexpected difficulties, for the young lady proved a good deal more self-assertive than they had calculated for. That their own hands might not be stained with its blood, they had the child conveyed to a desert infested with lions, and there abandoned. Presently a young lion approached, and assumed a threatening attitude. But the royal infant, putting on great dignity and boldness of manner, accosted the enemy with the question, Who are you? The reply came in majestic tones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Mulberry Tree and Silkworm: And on the Production and Manufacture of Silk Not to know what occurred before one was born, is to be, said an ancient writer, always a child. Knowledge, indeed, is that to which, as a means, we owe our all. And whatever we shall, or shall not, be or possess hereafter, will be measured by knowledge, or the want of it; or by our diligent use or neglect of it. Knowledge, in short, should be hailed, invited, as our best friend; whilst its reverse, ignorance, our worst, if not our only enemy, should be scouted, were it possible, from the very face of an earth tenanted by man, by all that aspire to the dignity of the intel lectual character. On knowledge, or on the want of it, how often has depended whether whole nations shall be civilized or uncivilized, as well as learned or unlearned; whether whole kingdoms shall slumber for centuries in comparative barbarism, as well as whether the myriads of individuals composing them shall spend their existence in prosperity and peace, or be immured in wretchedness, to bequeath it, as an entail, to their posterity after them. A Providence, kind and paternal, however, deserts not man, unless he neglect himself. The inventive faculty is given to him. Necessity, it is commonly said, is the mother of invention but with all deference to her maternal powers, it may be added, that they would be unproductive, were it not for the astonishing and yet undeveloped powers of mind. The history of mind, could it be well composed - and of its inventions and discoveries, for five thousand years, in the arts, in science, in manu factures, in implements, in machinery, and in productions of every kind, sweeping in its universe of evolutions, the two empires of material and immaterial being - would present at once the most interesting and im portant detail of the great and mystic movements of what the same Pro vidence has placed here, on this earth, to be the sovereign of ma/ter. We repeat it, Mind is the sovereign of matter Matter, it is true, in all forms, is created from age to age, ready to our hands, by the same Paternal energy; but it is left to the empire of instinct and reason, or of mind, through all its divisions of power, to move, change, transform, metamorphose it into other forms, substances, shapes, and modifications, so dissimilar, that the crude ore of the mountain becomes the spangling specie of the bank; the eece of an animal, the clothing of man; the cotton of a vegetable, the calico, the muslin of the store and the leaf of the mulberry tree, the velvet cushion of the throne, or the robes that embellish the persons of emperors and of queens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Silkworm: Being a Brief Manual of Instructions for the Production of Silk Whatever Opinions may be held as to the feasibility, or as to the profits of silk-culture in this country, the desire for information on the subject and the ambition to embark in the industry, evinced by correspondents of the Depart ment, demonstrate the fact that there will be no difficulty in getting our people to turn their attention to it. Without going into details as to the history of past attempts at silk-culture in North America, it must be obvious to all who thoroughly investigate them that the causes of failure have ever been transient ones. They may be summed up in the statements that (r) labor has found more profitable avenues of employment, and (2) that there has been no home market for the cocoons. At the present time the first statement no longer has force, but the second holds as true now as it ever did. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inheritance in Silkworms, I During the course of the work fifteen different silkworm races have been bred pure and used in hybridization, but a few of these have been used much more than the others. These various races (bagdad, Istrian, Japanese White, Japanese Green, Chinese White, Italian Yellow, French Yellow, Persian Yellow, Turkish and French Yellow, etc.) are distinguished from each other by Characteristics of the egg, the larva, the cocoon and, to some degree, of the adult. The varying egg char acters are Size, shape, color and degree of adhesiveness. The larval characters are Size, external appearance and, chiefly, color and pattern. The cocoon Characters are Size, Shape, character of silk as to tenacity, diameter, length, etc., of the thread, and, most conspicuously, color. The adult characters are size, and degree and character of patterning of wings. These characteristics are all of course affected by fluctuating varia tion and by occasional sport (reversional or mutational) variation, but for cocoon colors, larval colors and patterns, adhesiveness of egg and size of egg, and certain commercial characters of the Silk, as tenacity, diameter and length of the thread, the races are well separated and have long been bred pure. The mulberry silkworm has been domesticated and ameliorated by man for about five centuries. The exact feral Species from which it is derived is not certainly known. It seems most probable that the home of the wild progenitor was (perhaps still is) in the mountains of northern India. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mulberry Silk-Worm: Being a Manual of Instructions in Silk-Culture The growing interest shown in the culture of Silk, in the United States, is attested by the demands upon this Department for copies of this man ual, which has hitherto been published as Special Report No. 11. Origi nally prepared as a brief manual, based on my own experience of the industry in America, the present demands of Silk-growers, or rather of those desirous of becoming such, call for some further details, and in elaborating the work it has been thought best to include it among the bulletins of the Division. I have also divided the matter into chapters, and those on the implements which are necessary to, or facilitate, the work; those on diseases, reproduction, reeling, and the physical prop erties of raw silk embrace essentially new material, parts of Chapters V and VI being from my current annual report not yet distributed. In Chapter VIII, in speaking of machinery I have omitted the de tailed descriptions of special machines given in former editions and ex plained rather the mechanical principles that should be involved in all. A description of the Serrell Reel would have been very appropriate, but the inventor has been promised by the Commissioner that such should not be made public until all patents are secured. I Shall hope to elab orate this chapter in some future edition. It must not be forgotten that the original manual was never intended as an extended treatise on silk-raising or reeling, but was prepared to give, in a Simple and most condensed way, information to those inter osted, and in a form applicable to the United States. It is gratifying to know that a number of other pamphlets on the Silk-worm have Of late years been published, and that this manual has been quite freely used in their preparation. In one instance, in fact, an almost verbatim copy has been published and sold privately. I have found little or no occasion to alter opinions expressed in the manual, but in the present edition have revised the estimates of profits given in the Introduction to the original edition, leavmg out those on egg production, because of the changed conditions since 1870, which have rendered such work, as a profitable business, obsolete in this country, and the production of sound and reliable eggs much more difficult and expensive.
