Book excerpt: In the post era of the Z and W discovery, after the observation of Jets at UA1 and UA2 at CERN, John Ellis visioned at a HEP conference at Lake Tahoe, California in 1983 “To proceed with high energy particle physics, one has to tag the avour of the quarks!” This statement re ects the need for a highly precise tracking device, being able to resolve secondary and tertiary vertices within high-particle densities. Since the d- tance between the primary interaction point and the secondary vertex is proportional tothelifetimeoftheparticipatingparticle,itisanexcellentquantitytoidentifypar- cle avour in a very fast and precise way. In colliding beam experiments this method was applied especially to tag the presence of b quarks within particle jets. It was rst introduced in the DELPHI experiment at LEP but soon followed by all collider - periments to date. The long expected t quark discovery was possible mainly with the help of the CDF silicon vertex tracker, providing the b quark information. In the beginning of the 21st century the new LHC experiments are beginning to take 2 shape. CMS with its 206m of silicon area is perfectly suited to cope with the high luminosity environment. Even larger detectors are envisioned for the far future, like the SiLC project for the International Linear Collider. Silicon sensors matured from small 1in. single-sided devices to large 6in. double-sided, double metal detectors and to 6in. single-sided radiation hard sensors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pixel detectors are a particularly important class of particle and radiation detection devices. They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. This book will therefore benefit all scientists and engineers working in any laboratory involved in developing or using particle detection.

It is based on the deposition of a film of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) on an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). For almost 20 years, several research groups tried to demonstrate that a-Si:H material could be used to build radiation detectors for particle physics applications. A novel approach is made by the deposition of a-Si:H directly on the readout ASIC. This technique is similar to the concept of monolithic pixel detectors, but offers considerable advantages. We present first results from tests of a n- - a-Si:H diode array deposited on a glass substrate and on the a-Si:H above ASIC prototype detector.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various new configurations of silicon pixel detector have been designed and are in prototype production. The material selection and detector design are aimed to produce silicon detectors with radiation tolerance up to 6x1014 n/cm2 (or 4x1014 [pi]/cm2) in LHC environment, which corresponds to a net increase (with long term anneal) of space charge of about 4.2x1013 cm−3. The configuration of n/n/p, with multi-guard-rings structure for high voltage (up to 300 volts) operation, has been used for the purpose to make the detector insensitive to space charge sign inversion. The material selection of medium resistivity (1.9k [Omega]-cm) n-type silicon has been made to try a new solution in extending detector lifetime: it should be the first step toward the use of low resistivity silicon, to prevent type inversion. The traditional configuration of p+/n/n+, with multi-guard-ring structure and n-type material, has also been used with the same layout, to get a comparison. It is shown as the fabrication of n+/n/p+ pixel detectors requires eight mask steps, while just four mask steps are required for the p+/n/n+ configuration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Greek philosophers believed that atom was the smallest part of matter and was indivisible. In the time since, scientists have continually accumulated information that shows the inconsistency of the idea of the atom as the smallest particle. Modern physicists have shown the existence of subatomic particles. As part of the effort to help answer questions about the nature of the subatomic particles, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. RHIC is a complex piece of machinery whose primary function is to smash high-speed ions into each other, hopefully creating a shower of subatomic particles in the collision. In order to detect the resulting particles, many different types of detectors have been proposed and employed. Monolithic silicon pixel detectors have been studied extensively because we can have the detecting element and the readout electronics integrated onto the same silicon wafer. Couple advantages of this approach compare to having separate silicon wafers for the detecting element and the readout electronic are: (1) Thin device. (2) No detector-electronic connection. We are able to improve the speed of the MIMOSA chip of LEPSI/IreS by employing column in parallel readout instead of serial readout. We also propose a new pixel structure that would give us the ability for the array to sample the events at the same time. A new read out technique of Read-Read-Again is also being implemented. The idea of this technique is basically read each particular pixel twice, once for the actual signal excited by particle hit and then we reset the pixel before we read the second time for the reset signal. The Read-Read-Again technique will compensate the fixed pattern noise (FPN) for the non-uniformity of the threshold voltage of the source follower transistor in the pixel. Our study shows that monolithic silicon pixel detector is feasible to be built in the custom twin-tub CMOS fabrication process. This is good because a well-established fabrication process already exists. Our study also shows a promising result of employing the Read-Read-Again technique.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor sensors patterned at the micron scale combined with custom-designed integrated circuits have revolutionized semiconductor radiation detector systems. Designs covering many square meters with millions of signal channels are now commonplace in high-energy physics and the technology is finding its way into many other fields, ranging from astrophysics to experiments at synchrotron light sources and medical imaging. This book is the first to present a comprehensive discussion of the many facets of highly integrated semiconductor detector systems, covering sensors, signal processing, transistors and circuits, low-noise electronics, and radiation effects. The diversity of design approaches is illustrated in a chapter describing systems in high-energy physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. Finally a chapter "Why things don't work" discusses common pitfalls. Profusely illustrated, this book provides a unique reference in a key area of modern science.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpolation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method.
