Book excerpt: Silicon effects on tensile and creep properties, and thermal conductivity of Hi-Nicalon SiC/SiC composites have been investigated. The composites consist of 8 layers of 5HS 2-D woven preforms of BN/SiC coated Hi-Nicalon fiber mats and a silicon matrix, or a mixture of silicon matrix and SiC particles. The Hi-Nicalon SiC/silicon and Hi-Nicalon SiC/SiC composites contained about 24 and 13 vol% silicon, respectively. Results indicate residual silicon up to 24 vol% has no significant effect on creep and thermal conductivity, but does decrease the primary elastic modulus and stress corresponding to deviation from linear stress-strain behavior. The effects of Si content on the mechanical properties as well as creep behavior were studied using four-point bending tests. The elastic modulus and flexural strength were reduced with increasing Si content. The change in elastic modulus with Si content followed the rule of mixtures at room temperature. The elevated-temperature flexural strength decreased significantly when Si content was above 20 vol.%. The creep rate increased with Si content, especially when Si content was above 20 vol.%. Composites containing less than 20 vol.% Si exhibited a significant creep resistance up to 1550ʻC. The stress and temperature thresholds for creep were found for the composites containing more than 20 vol.% Si. Temperature or stress beyond their corresponding threshold value caused a significant acceleration in creep. The creep data were analyzed to identify the creep mechanisms.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber reinforced MoSi2-SiC matrix composites (SiC/MoSi2-SiC) have been fabricated by the melt infiltration approach. The composite consists of approximately 60 vol%, 2-D woven BN/SiC coated Hi-Nicalon SiC fibers and approximately 40 vol% MoSi2-SiC matrix. The room temperature tensile properties and thermal conductivity of the SiC/MoSi2-SiC composites were measured and compared with those of the melt infiltrated SiC/SiC composites. The influence oi fiber architecture on tensile properties was also evaluated. Results indicate that the primary modulus, stress corresponding to deviation from linearity, and transverse thermal conductivity values for the SiC/MoSi2-SiC composites are significantly lower than those for the SiC/SiC composites. Microcracking of the matrix due to the large difference in thermal expansion between MoSi2 and SiC appears to be the reason for the lower matrix dominated properties of SiC/MoSi2-SiC composites.

Book excerpt: High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.

Book excerpt: The elevated temperature four-point flexural strength and the room temperature tensile and flexural strength properties after thermal shock were measured for ceramic composites consisting of 30 vol % uniaxially aligned 142 microns diameter SiC fibers in a reaction bonded Si3N4 matrix. The elevated temperature strengths were measured after 15 min of exposure in air at temperatures to 1400 C. The thermal shock treatment was accomplished by heating the composite in air for 15 min at temperatures to 1200 C and then quenching in water at 25 C. The results indicate no significant loss in strength properties either at temperature or after thermal shock when compared with the strength data for composites in the as-fabricated condition. This book was released on 2001 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis research is to characterize and compare the mechanical behavior of four SiC/SiC material systems made by the melt infiltration process. All four material systems have a silicon carbide fiber, boron nitride (BN) coating, silicon carbide overcoat, and a silicon carbide matrix. The main differences between the material systems are the size of the SiC overcoat and the way the SiC matrix is mixed. All four material systems were both tensile and fatigue tested at room and elevated (1000C̊) temperatures. The main purpose of the comparison was to determine the material system that will perform best in structural applications under various loading and environmental conditions. Material System IV seems to exhibit the most desired behavior under high temperature fatigue loads. The Si-rich matrix acts as a composite within the composite to distribute the fatigue load evenly throughout the material system. Material System IV also has the lowest combined percentage of void and porosities of 4.65%, which helps the material to better withstand extreme environmental conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preforms of BN/SiC coated Sylramic SiC fibers were heat treated at 1420 deg, 1600 deg, and 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon or at 1800 deg C in 103 MPa nitrogen for 1 h. Optical, SEM, and TEM techniques were used to analyze the effects of environmental exposure on constituent microstructure of the preforms. TEM analysis of the as-received preforms indicates that the CVI BN coating is predominantly amorphous with small amounts of microcrystalline BN grains, and that the SiC coating on top of the BN coating and SiC fibers is polycrystalline. With increasing temperature of exposure from 1420 deg to 1800 deg C, the preforms heat treated in argon showed increasing amounts of crystalline BN in the CVI BN coating, and coarsening of SiC grains in the CVI SiC coating and SiC fibers. On the other hand, the preforms heal treated in 103 MPa nitrogen at 1800 deg C for 1 h showed microstructural changes inside the fiber tows similar to those heat treated at 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon for 1 h, but the same preforms on the outer periphery of the tows showed reaction between nitrogen and the CVI SiC coating to form Si3N4.

Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.
