Book excerpt: One shot. As it pierced the humid air of the Port City, the neighbors didn't even hear the glass shatter as a bullet ripped into the chest of Katie Harris, a young college student. Despite living in a building of about a hundred tenants, the only witnesses at the scene are her guinea pigs, Rocky and Radar. So, what's Detective Wallis to do? She sets out to find the perp. Most likely, he's one of Wilmington's weekend residents from one of the surrounding military bases. But, how will she find the seasoned killer with so little evidence?

Book Synopsis Coding and Decoding: Seismic Data by : Luc T. Ikelle
Download or read book Coding and Decoding: Seismic Data written by Luc T. Ikelle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, the acquisition of seismic surveys is performed as a sequential operation in which shots are computed separately, one after the other. This approach is similar to that of multiple-access technology, which is widely used in cellular communications to allow several subscribers to share the same telephone line. The cost of performing various shots simultaneously is almost identical to that of one shot; thus, the savings in time and money expected from using the multishooting approach for computing seismic surveys compared to the current approach are enormous. By using this approach, the long-standing problem of simulating a three-dimensional seismic survey can be reduced to a matter of weeks and not years, as is currently the case. - Investigates how to collect, stimulate, and process multishooting data - Addresses the improvements in seismic characterization and resolution one can expect from multishooting data - Aims to educate the oil and gas exploration and production business of the benefits of multishooting data, and to influence their day-to-day surveying techniques
Book Synopsis Durational Cinema by : Michael Walsh
Download or read book Durational Cinema written by Michael Walsh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for a durational cinema that is distinct from slow cinema, and outlines the history of its three main waves: the New York avant-garde of the 1960s, the European art cinema in the years after 1968, and the international cinema of gallery spaces as well as film festivals since the 1990s. Figures studied include Andy Warhol, Ken Jacobs, Chantal Akerman, Marguerite Duras, Claude Lanzmann, James Benning, Kevin Jerome Everson, Lav Diaz, and Wang Bing.Durational cinema is predominantly minimal, but has from the beginning also included a more encompassing or encyclopedic kind of filmmaking. Durational cinema is characteristically representational, and converges on certain topics (the Holocaust, deindustrialization, the experience of the working class and other marginalized people), but has no one meaning, signifying differently at different moments and in different hands. Warhol’s durational cinema of subtraction is quite different from Jacobs’s durational cinema of social disgust, while Lav Diaz’ durational sublime is quite different from Kevin Jerome Everson’s unblinking studies of African-American working people.

Book Synopsis The American Newsreel by : Raymond Fielding
Download or read book The American Newsreel written by Raymond Fielding and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fifty years, the newsreel was a fixture in American movie theaters. Released twice a week, less than ten minutes long, each had news footage that combined journalism with entertainment. With the advent of television news programs after World War II, newsreels began to be obsolete, but they remain the first instances of moving image photographic journalism and were for decades a unique source of information--and misinformation. This history details the full span of the American newsreel from 1911 to 1967, discussing the European forerunners, changes in the American version over time, and the ethical and unethical use of newsreels in present-day television documentaries. Photographs, bibliography and index.
Book Synopsis European Civil War Films by : Eleftheria Rania Kosmidou
Download or read book European Civil War Films written by Eleftheria Rania Kosmidou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which late twentieth-century European cinema deals with the neglected subject of civil war. Exploring a range of films about the Spanish, Irish, former Yugoslavia, and Greek civil wars, this comparative and interdisciplinary study engages with contemporary debates in cultural memory and investigates the ways in which cinematic postmemory is problematic. Many of the films present an idealized past that glosses over the reality of these civil wars, at times producing a nostalgic discourse of loss and longing. Other films engage with the past in a melancholic fashion. These cinematic discourses articulate contemporary concerns, especially the loss of ideology and a utopian political horizon in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet bloc in 1989, a date that marks a significant break in European history and an accompanying paradigm shift in European cultural memory. Filmmakers examined include Trueba, Cuerda, Loach, Jordan, Kusturica, Dragojevic, and Angelopoulos.

Book Synopsis The Complete Father Brown Stories by : G K Chesterton
Download or read book The Complete Father Brown Stories written by G K Chesterton and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 1087 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete adventures of the well-loved clerical sleuth, collected in one brilliant volume. Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself. This complete edition brings together all of the Father Brown stories, including two not previously available in Penguin: 'The Donnington Affair', in which Chesterton rises to the challenge of solving a murder-mystery half written by someone else (Max Pemberton), and 'The Mask of Midas', which was found in Chesterton's papers after his death. It also includes an introduction and notes by Michael D. Hurley. G.K. Chesteron was born in 1874. He attended the Slade School of Art, where he appears to have suffered a nervous breakdown, before turning his hand to journalism. A prolific writer throughout his life, his best-known books include The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904), The Man Who Knew Too Much(1922), The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) and the Father Brown stories. Chesterton converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922 and died in 1938. Michael D. Hurley is a Lecturer in English at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of St Catharine's College. He has written widely on English literature from the nineteenth century to the present day, with an emphasis on poetry and poetics. His book on G. K. Chesterton was published in 2011.
