The next two days witnessed the arrival of many more girls and boys, with bright, happy-looking faces. Their silent yet spirited conversation, and the play of varied expressions upon their countenances, proved for Carrie a source of much interest, though she kept shyly apart from the busy, animated talkers, aware of her inability to take part in their silent conversation. CHAPTER IV. THE COMMENCEMENT OF SCHOOL DUTIES. Thursday morning, the time in which active school duties were to commence, Carrie was placed with the other girls, who stood in a long line in the large study. room. After each one had been assigned a place in the line they all marched in single file through the.girl's sewing-room, which -adjoined their, study-room, and so down stairs and on to a large building adjacent, which they entered. Passing through a corridor, they mounted a flight of steps, at the top of which a door, to the left, led into the chapel, a spacious room, lighted partly by rows of windows extending along two sides of it, and partly by an immense, skylight above. There were rows of long, dark-colored benches, commencing in front of and near an elevated platform, and rising gradually from it, each successive bench being about a foot above the level of the preceding one, thus affording a free and unobstructed view of the platform from remote parts of the room. Into this room the girls marched slowly, while through the door on the opposite side of-the room a long line of boys were also slowly entering. After all were seated--the boys, on the left and the girls on the right--a neatlydressed gentleman came into the room, mounted the steps of the platform, and, turning to the assembled throng, gazed into their pleasant faces for a few minutes; then, smiling, ..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability, Fourth Edition, is an indispensable tool for human services students in understanding disability from an empowerment perspective. The textbook is divided into three parts: Part I establishes a nontraditional context of disability, moving readers away from the perspective that people with disabilities are sick, passive, and deviant. Part II looks at groupings of disabilities placed within the context of the social definition of disability. Part III discusses human service practice with people with disabilities. Authors Mackelprang, Salsgiver, and Parrey establish the historical and societal context in which those living with disabilities are marginalized while offering a social ecological model and its three--biosocial, psychosocial, and social--cultural dimensions that students and instructors can employ. Readers will also be introduced to universal diversity theory, which draws from feminist, race, disability, and queer theories for an approach that is applicable across all diverse groups. Written from a North American perspective, the book also addresses disability laws, policies, and practices globally. Learning objectives guide students' reading and discussion questions highlight key ideas while text boxes and personal narratives bring the book to life.

Book excerpt: A sensuous, textured novel of life in a refugee camp, long-listed for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction On a hill overlooking a refugee camp in Sudan, a young man strings up bedsheets that, in an act of imaginative resilience, will serve as a screen in his silent cinema. From the cinema he can see all the comings and goings in the camp, especially those of two new arrivals: a girl named Saba, and her mute brother, Hagos. For these siblings, adapting to life in the camp is not easy. Saba mourns the future she lost when she was forced to abandon school, while Hagos, scorned for his inability to speak, must live vicariously through his sister. Both resist societal expectations by seeking to redefine love, sex, and gender roles in their lives, and when a businessman opens a shop and befriends Hagos, they cast off those pressures and make an unconventional choice. With this cast of complex, beautifully drawn characters, Sulaiman Addonia details the textures and rhythms of everyday life in a refugee camp, and questions what it means to be an individual when one has lost all that makes a home or a future. Intimate and subversive, Silence Is My Mother Tongue dissects the ways society wages war on women and explores the stories we must tell to survive in a broken, inhospitable environment.

Book excerpt: This brief, accessibly written volume introduces key figures, texts, and themes of the mystical tradition and shows how and why the mystics can speak to the church today. Jason Baxter, an expert educator and storyteller, explains that the mystical tradition offers a more robust understanding of God than our current shallow conceptions. Featuring engagement with primary sources and suitable for use in a variety of courses, this book argues that the mystics have much to say to contemporary Christians searching for authentic modes of spirituality.

Book excerpt: Your Silence Will Not Protect You collects the essential essays and poems of Audre Lorde for the first time, including the classic 'The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House'. A trailblazer in intersectional feminism, Lorde's luminous writings have inspired a new generation of thinkers and writers charged by the Black Lives Matter movement. Her lyrical and incisive prose takes on sexism, racism, homophobia, and class; reflecting struggle but ultimately offering messages of hope that remain ever-more trenchant today. Also a celebrated poet, Lorde was New York State Poet Laureate until her death; her poetry and prose together produced an aphoristic and incomparably quotable style, as evidenced by her constant presence on many Women's Marches against Trump across the world. This beautiful edition honours the ways in which Lorde's work resonates more than ever thirty years after they were first published.
