Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some contemporary approaches to literature still accept the separation of historical, biographical, external concerns from formal, internal ones. On the borderline that lends this division between inside and outside its apparent coherence is signature. In Peggy Kamuf’s view, studying signature will help us to rediscover some of the stakes of literary writing beyond the historicist/formalist opposition. Drawing on Derrida’s extensive work on signatures and proper names, Kamuf investigates authorial signature in key writers from Rousseau to Woolf, as well as the implications of signature for the institutions of authorship and criticism.

Book excerpt: Mongrel Signatures reviews the Australian writer Mudrooroo's career and deals with central issues of identity, authenticity and truth. After 1996, academics and writers in Australia and around the world endorsed or denied Mudrooroo's Aboriginality after research had dramatically called his Indigenous identity into question. There has also been a long silence among fans of Mudrooroo, who has not commented publicly on his racial belonging. These challenging and lively “reflections” by European and Australian scholars and writers are not meant to discuss whether Mudrooroo can legitimately sign his works with an Aboriginal name (an essentialist and problematic view of identity and authenticity). Instead, they explore how Mudrooroo's writing restages the drama of subjectivity in terms of ‘articulation’ rather than ‘authentication’, and ask how we are to read him now in the face of current accusations and the cultural scenario of Aboriginal arts and studies. The contributors - in disagreement or in dialogue - treat questions of identity and representation, reading Mudrooroo's work through the lenses of such perspectives as psychoanalysis, postmodernism, postcolonialism, deconstruction and queer theory. The essays are designed to provoke debate and to dissolve the rigid polarities hitherto characterizing discussion of this highly influential creative artist. Contributors are: Clare Archer-Lean, Maureen Clark, Graziella Englaro, Eva Rask Knudsen, Ruby Langford Ginibi, Maggie Nolan, Annalisa Oboe, Wendy Pearson, Lorenzo Perrona, Cassandra Pybus, Adam Shoemaker, and Gerry Turcotte

Book excerpt: The complex notion of "rasa," as understood by Javanese musicians, refers to a combination of various qualities, including: taste, feeling, affect, mood, sense, inner meaning, a faculty of knowing intuitively, and deep understanding. This leaves us with a number of questions: how is rasa expressed musically? Who or what has rasa, and what sorts of musical, psychological, perceptual, and sociological distinctions enter into this determination? How is the vocabulary of rasa structured, and what does this tell us about traditional Javanese music and aesthetics? In this first book on the subject, Rasa provides an entry into Javanese music as it is conceived by the people who know the tradition best: the musicians themselves. In one of the most thorough explorations of local aesthetics to date, author Marc Benamou argues that musical meaning is above all connotative - hence, not only learned, but learnable. Following several years performing and researching Javanese music in the regional and national cultural center of Solo, Indonesia, Benamou untangles the many meanings of rasa as an aesthetic criterion in Javanese music, particularly in court and court-derived gamelan traditions. While acknowledging that certain universal psychological tendencies may inspire parallel interpretations of musical meaning, Rasa demonstrates just how culturally specific such accrued, shared meanings can be.

Book excerpt: Moschino and Vergeylen have forged an unconventional approach to design that breathes new life into dated period properties, and endows modern buildings with warmth and charisma. Their effervescent approach to life keeps their interiors fresh and relaxed, attracting a young and discerning clientele in Europe and the US. The designers are energized by their global travels, informed by history, and inspired by encounters with people, places, film and art and fashion. The process by which their varied sources of inspiration translate into material form is explored in detail in Signature Spaces, providing a rare insight into how interior design works. Signature Spaces: Well-travelled Interiors by Paolo Moschino & Philip Vergleyn is an insider's view of the interior design process, revealing how any room can be transformed into a space for inspired living, as opposed to simply existing. Illustrated with hundreds of stunning photographs, drawings, and mood boards, the book explores the fascinating way in which the designers are energized by the world around them to create chic rooms that are never predictable. These are rooms that always feel welcoming, and always contain an element of surprise.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors describe the findings derived from interaction and cooperation between scientific actors employing diverse practices. They reflect on distinct prototyping concepts and examine the transformation of development culture in their fusion to hybrid approaches and solutions. The products of tomorrow are going to be multifunctional, interactive systems – and already are to some degree today. Collaboration across multiple disciplines is the only way to grasp their complexity in design concepts. This underscores the importance of reconsidering the prototyping process for the development of these systems, particularly in transdisciplinary research teams. “Rethinking Prototyping – new hybrid concepts for prototyping” was a transdisciplinary project that took up this challenge. The aim of this programmatic rethinking was to come up with a general concept of prototyping by combining innovative prototyping concepts, which had been researched and developed in three sub-projects: “Hybrid Prototyping” developed new prototyping approaches to validate and evaluate holistically developed systems with their services, infrastructure and business models. “Blended Prototyping” addressed a new technique whereby prototypes for user interfaces of software applications can be generated from hand drawings and immediately be tested. “Beyond Prototyping” examined the issue of the prototype in connection with algorithmically generated design for producing tailor-made products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Practical Intrusion Analysis provides a solid fundamental overview of the art and science of intrusion analysis.” –Nate Miller, Cofounder, Stratum Security The Only Definitive Guide to New State-of-the-Art Techniques in Intrusion Detection and Prevention Recently, powerful innovations in intrusion detection and prevention have evolved in response to emerging threats and changing business environments. However, security practitioners have found little reliable, usable information about these new IDS/IPS technologies. In Practical Intrusion Analysis, one of the field’s leading experts brings together these innovations for the first time and demonstrates how they can be used to analyze attacks, mitigate damage, and track attackers. Ryan Trost reviews the fundamental techniques and business drivers of intrusion detection and prevention by analyzing today’s new vulnerabilities and attack vectors. Next, he presents complete explanations of powerful new IDS/IPS methodologies based on Network Behavioral Analysis (NBA), data visualization, geospatial analysis, and more. Writing for security practitioners and managers at all experience levels, Trost introduces new solutions for virtually every environment. Coverage includes Assessing the strengths and limitations of mainstream monitoring tools and IDS technologies Using Attack Graphs to map paths of network vulnerability and becoming more proactive about preventing intrusions Analyzing network behavior to immediately detect polymorphic worms, zero-day exploits, and botnet DoS attacks Understanding the theory, advantages, and disadvantages of the latest Web Application Firewalls Implementing IDS/IPS systems that protect wireless data traffic Enhancing your intrusion detection efforts by converging with physical security defenses Identifying attackers’ “geographical fingerprints” and using that information to respond more effectively Visualizing data traffic to identify suspicious patterns more quickly Revisiting intrusion detection ROI in light of new threats, compliance risks, and technical alternatives Includes contributions from these leading network security experts: Jeff Forristal, a.k.a.
