Book excerpt: Signaling without Saying develops game-theoretic approaches to social meaning to model the phenomenon of dogwhistles, perhaps best known from political speech. These constructions involve language that sends one message to an out-group while at the same time sending a second-often taboo, controversial, or inflammatory-message to an in-group. Robert Henderson and Elin McCready show that dogwhistles should not be modeled in the same way as related language, like slurs, and nor should they be treated via standard Gricean implicatures computed over truth-conditional meaning; instead, they should be treated as primarily bearing social meaning, as understood by modern variationist sociolinguistic theories. The book identifies and models two different kinds of dogwhistle meaning, while also exploring a variety of related phenomena. The authors show how novel implicatures in the social meaning domain can arise when a listener detects a dogwhistle, and connect them to implicatures familiar in the truth-conditional domain. Social meaning, they argue, can be added to theories of trust in testimonial evidence, and dogwhistles can help to establish trust with an audience, even when expressing false propositions. The final chapter of the book looks at connections between dogwhistles and other issues important in epistemology and philosophy of language which might involve social meaning, such as standpoint theory.

Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather, but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus we don't like to talk or even think about the extent of our selfishness. This is the elephant in the brain. Such an introspective taboo makes it hard for us to think clearly about our nature and the explanations for our behavior. The aim of this book, then, is to confront our hidden motives directly - to track down the darker, unexamined corners of our psyches and blast them with floodlights. Then, once everything is clearly visible, we can work to better understand ourselves: Why do we laugh? Why are artists sexy? Why do we brag about travel? Why do we prefer to speak rather than listen? Our unconscious motives drive more than just our private behavior; they also infect our venerated social institutions such as Art, School, Charity, Medicine, Politics, and Religion. In fact, these institutions are in many ways designed to accommodate our hidden motives, to serve covert agendas alongside their official ones. The existence of big hidden motives can upend the usual political debates, leading one to question the legitimacy of these social institutions, and of standard policies designed to favor or discourage them. You won't see yourself - or the world - the same after confronting the elephant in the brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's managed mental health care environment, clinical hypnosis has become popular as a tool for alleviating symptoms promptly. This book is about using ideomotor (IM) signals in the rapid hypnoanalysis of psychosomatic disorders. The technique of rapid hypnoanalysis addresses the whole brain and places the feeling back into brief therapy without removing the logic or the efficiency. It offers a refreshing alternative that allows therapists to go deeper while being even briefer. Part I covers basic concepts and principles. The value, principles, and treatment planning of hypnoanalysis are discussed, including special intake questions and how to set up ideomotor signals. Part II covers basic applications of rapid hypnoanalysis and illustrates their employment. The seven common causes of psychosomatic disorders, ideomotor applications to Direct Suggestion in Hypnosis (DSIH), hypnotic preparation and care of the surgical patient, self-hypnosis, and treating the cognitive and emotional components of persistent pain are examined. Part III presents clinical transcripts of cases to illustrate the actual uses of the technique with psychosomatic patients. These transcripts explore the technique with a complex smoking cessation patient, a simple smoking recall session, a one-visit cure of a hypersensitive scar, and a workshop demonstration session with an asthma patient. This is a "how-to" book that provides numerous case examples and illustrations showing specifically how ideomotor analysis techniques are used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Integration traces the history of efforts to integrate psychoanalysis with other psychotherapeutic modalities, beginning with the early analysts, including Ferenczi and Rank, and continuing on to the present day. It explores the potential for integration made possible by contemporary developments in theory and technique that are fundamental to a relational psychoanalytic approach. Editors Jill Bresler and Karen Starr bring together an array of valuable theoretical and clinical contributions by relationally oriented psychoanalysts who identify their work as integrative. The book is organized in four segments: theoretical frameworks of psychotherapy integration; integrating multiple models of psychotherapy into a psychoanalytically informed treatment; working with specific populations; the future of integration, exploring the issues involved in educating clinicians in integrative practice. The contributions in this volume demonstrate that integrating techniques from a variety of psychotherapies outside of psychoanalysis can enrich and enhance psychoanalytic practice. It will be an invaluable resource for all practicing psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in training, particularly those with an interest in relational psychoanalysis and psychotherapy integration.

Book excerpt: "This is friends-to-lovers romance…but it's in the science-fiction story line where Cole really shines. The setup of Mixed Signals seems eerily plausible, and the entwined love story will satisfy sci-fi and romance readers alike." —New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean, Washington Journal, Best Romances of November 2015 Four years after the Flare, the world is finally starting to rebuild For Maggie Seong, that means leaving the safety of her family's cabin for college. She won't be alone, though—hunky former military cadet Edwin Hernandez, family friend and self-appointed Protector of Maggie's Virtue, will be there. Maggie would much prefer that Edwin himself dispose of her "innocence," but he's already rejected her advances once, and a girl has her pride. Things look pretty bleak romance-wise until Maggie discovers that Devon, the pre-Flare internet boyfriend she'd assumed was dead, is not only alive but on campus. Despite the passage of time, their bond is strong, and they quickly pick up where they left off. Even as Devon aims for a chance at love IRL—everything Maggie thought she'd wanted—Edwin's desire to protect her makes her question her heart. Maggie's torn between the future she didn't dare to hope for and the past she can't let go of. And when a group of neo-Luddite terrorists threaten the campus, everyone's loyalties will be tested. To ensure that the world doesn't go back to the dark days following the Flare, Maggie might have to sacrifice it all. Book three of Off the Grid. Book excerpt: Would you like to improve the emotional intelligence of your kids? Signals offers a simple, relational approach to help you become aware of your emotions, their impact on others, and how to implement this technique in your home, school, or ministry. While we can’t see the brain, it sends signals to us and those around us. Just as the colors of a traffic light send drivers a signal to go, slow down, or stop, our brains signal to our emotions and affect our behavior toward others. In Signals, Cherilyn Orr introduces a common language and imagery to help everyone manage their emotions. Rooted in neuroscience and the Bible, this approach has been used around the world because its spans across all cultural contexts. Learn how to read these signals, become more aware of your emotions as well as your child’s, and understand how to respond based on the signal sent. For parents and educators, this approach is an easy-to-understand way to evaluate what’s going on with your child, mentally and emotionally, at any given moment to determine an appropriate response. Signals is also useful for kids with special needs, including those with autism. Applying the technique can transform the relationships you have with your kids and set them on a lifelong trajectory of ever-increasing emotional intelligence.

Book excerpt: IN THIS his second novel, sequel to the first but entirely readable as it stands alone, Paul Traywick continues the stories of the women and men who are his characters ("They are all 'main characters' "), and develops the themes of loss, love, madness, death, and, chiefly, of man's opportunity to "lift up his heart," a need so desperate in our world today...as it has likely been always , will likely always be. The expanded perception of this world, of worlds beyond it, and glimpses of a wholly transcendent yet contrarily accessible realm abide continuously above the broad but intense array of human events; above exulting, striving, enduring people; above brightly living places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old-timer physician, Stephen L. DeFelice, with no holds barred, describes to his grandchildren, Olivia and Stephen Carlos, how they are rapidly crossing the bridge from the traditional world into the cold, controlling world of technology. As a result, we are all surrendering our privacy and freedom to others while, puzzlingly, there are few effective leaders to guide and protect us. This book analyzes what people and governments are really like, the dark side of technology and such subjects as our educational system, the media, our hate epidemic, the sexual revolution, evolution and the anti-God movements as well as ways to adjust to this new, unsettling world of technology. He coined an interesting term, The Internet Democracy, as a major cause behind the dynamics fueling our chaotic technological-based cultural explosion. Dr. DeFelice was born of Italian immigrant parents in 1936 in a home without a television or telephone and has had, firsthand, the unique privilege of personally observing and analyzing the power of increasing technology and its impact on our changing cultural values over four generations, an opportunity that future historians will not have. In 1976 he founded FIM, the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, whose mission is to accelerate medical discovery, www.fimdefelice.org.
