Diese Hausarbeit widmet sich der Frage, ob die psychoanalytische Literaturwissenschaft einen Mehrwert innerhalb der Literaturtheorien leistet - oder ob sie willkürlich und abwegig ist.

Eine davon ist die psychoanalytische Literaturinterpretation, die in erster Linie auf den Begründer der Psychoanalyse Sigmund Freud zurückgeht, der es als einer der bedeutendsten und zugleich umstrittensten Wissenschaftler seiner Zeit geschafft hat, dass seine Theorie und Werke trotz vieler Kritik auf der ganzen Welt bekannt wurden und noch heute eine überaus wichtige Rolle in der Psychologie spielen. Doch Freuds Theorie hatte nicht nur Auswirkungen auf dieses Gebiet der Wissenschaft, sondern auch auf den Bereich der Literaturwissenschaft. Ein Grund dafür, dass sich die Psychoanalyse auf die Literaturwissenschaft anwenden lässt, könnte dabei die Tatsache spielen, dass beide „gleichermaßen auf Methoden der Interpretation beruhen.“ [...] In dieser Arbeit soll die Psychoanalyse als literaturwissenschaftliche Methode untersucht und somit festgestellt werden, ob die Anwendung dieser Methode heute noch gerechtfertigt werden kann oder nicht. Die erwähnten Ansätze und Verbindungen zur Literaturwissenschaft beziehen sich dabei in erster Linie auf Sigmund Freud. Um einordnen zu können, wie es zu solch einer Literaturinterpretation gekommen ist, wird daher im ersten Kapitel das Verhältnis von Literatur und Psychoanalyse dargestellt, indem Teile von Freuds psychoanalytischer Theorie auf die Literatur übertragen werden. Im zweiten Kapitel wird gezeigt, auf welche Art und Weise die Psychoanalyse auf Literatur angewendet werden kann, wobei zwei Möglichkeiten dargestellt werden: zum einen die auf den Dichter bezogene und zum anderen die auf den Text bezogene Literaturinterpretation. Im darauf folgenden Kapitel werden diese beiden Möglichkeiten der psychoanalytischen Literaturinterpretation am Beispiel von Kafkas Urteil verdeutlicht. Im vierten Kapitel wird die psychoanalytische Interpretation schließlich kritisch betrachtet und somit überprüft, ob sie auch heute noch den Ansprüchen einer literaturwissenschaftlichen Methode gerecht wird.

In Freud's view, this sense of guilt is a trace, a path, that leads deep into the individual's mental state, into childhood memories, and into the prehistory of culture and religion. Herman Westerink follows this trace and analyzes Freud's thought on the sense of guilt as a central issue in his work, from the earliest studies on the moral and "guilty" characters of the hysterics, via later complex differentiations within the concept of the sense of guilt, and finally to Freud's conception of civilization's discontents and Jewish sense of guilt. Book excerpt: The present anthology seeks to give an overview of the different approaches to establish a relation between phenomenology and psychoanalysis, primarily from the viewpoint of current phenomenological research. Already during the lifetimes of the two disciplines' founders, Edmund Husserl (1859 - 1938) and Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939), phenomenological and phenomenologically inspired authors were advancing psychoanalytic theses. For both traditions, the Second World War presented a painful and devastating disruption of their development and mutual exchange. During the postwar period, phenomenologists, especially in France, revisited psychoanalytic topics. Thus, in the so-called second generation of phenomenology there developed an intensive reception of the psychoanalytic tradition, one that finds its expression even today in current hermeneutic, postmodern and poststructuralist conceptions. But also in more recent phenomenological research we find projects concentrated systematically on psychoanalysis and its theses. In this context, the status of psychoanalysis as a science of human experience is discussed anew, now approached on the ‘first person’ basis of a phenomenological understanding of subjective experience. In such approaches, phenomena like incorporation, phantasy, emotion and the unconscious are discussed afresh. These topics, important for modern phenomenology as well as for psychoanalysis, are examined in the context of the constitution of the human person as well as of our intersubjective world. The analyses are also interdisciplinary, making use of connections with modern medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy. The systematic investigations are enriched by historical analysis and research in the internal development of the disciplines involved. The volume presents recent work of internationally recognized researchers – phenomenologically oriented philosophers, psychoanalysts and psychotherapists – who work in the common field of the two disciplines. The editors hope that this selection will encourage further systematic collaboration between phenomenology and psychoanalysis

Rose uncovers the unity discernable among the many fragments of Adorno’s oeuvre, and argues that his influence has been to turn Marxism into a search for style. The attempts of Adorno, Lukács and Benjamin to develop a Marxist theory of culture centred on the concept of reification are contrasted, and the ways in which the concept of reification has come to be misused are exposed. Adorno’s continuation for his own time of the Marxist critique of philosophy is traced through his writings on Hegel, Kierkegaard, Husserl and Heidegger. His opposition to the separation of philosophy and sociology is shown by examination of his critique of Durkheim and Weber, and of his contributions to the dispute over positivism, his critique of empirical social research and his own empirical sociology. Gillian Rose shows Adorno’s most important contribution to be his founding of a Marxist aesthetic that offers a sociology of culture, as demonstrated in his essays on Kafka, Mann, Beckett, Brecht and Schönberg. Finally, Adorno’s ‘Melancholy Science’ is revealed to offer a ‘sociology of illusion’ that rivals both structural Marxism and phenomenological sociology as well as the subsequent work of the Frankfurt School.

The first sketches the main outlines of a complex emotional state which is of fundamental importance in sexual psychology; the second, by bringing together evidence from widely different regions, suggests a tentative explanation of facts that are still imperfectly known; the third attempts to show that even in fields where we assume our knowledge to be adequate a broader view of the phenomena teaches us to suspend judgment and to adopt a more cautious attitude. So far as they go, these studies are complete in themselves; their special use, as an introduction to a more comprehensive analysis of sexual phenomena, is that they bring before us, under varying aspects, a characteristic which, though often ignored, is of the first importance in obtaining a clear understanding of the facts: the tendency of the sexual impulse to appear in a spontaneous and to some extent periodic manner, affecting women differently from men. This is a tendency which, later, I hope to make still more apparent, for it has practical and social, as well as psychological, implications.
