Book Synopsis You'll Be Sor-ree! by : Sid Phillips
Download or read book You'll Be Sor-ree! written by Sid Phillips and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sid Phillips, a World War II Marine Corps hero featured in HBO®'s The Pacific, offers up an invaluable firsthand account of the war against Japan. A mortarman with H-2-1 of the legendary 1st Marine Division, Sid was only seventeen years old when he entered combat with the Japanese. Some two years later, when he returned home, the island fighting on Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester had turned Sid into an "Old Timer" by Marine standards, and more: he left as a boy, but came home a man. These are his memoirs, the humble and candid tales that Sid collected during a Pacific odyssey spanning half the globe, from the grueling boot camp at Parris Island, to the coconut groves of Guadalcanal, to the romantic respite of Australia. Sid recalls his encounters with icons like Chesty Puller, General Vandergrift, Eleanor Roosevelt, and his boyhood friend, Eugene Sledge. He remembers the rain of steel from Japanese bombers and battleships, the brutality of the tropical elements, and the haunting notion of being expendable. This is the story of how Sid stood shoulder to shoulder with his Marine brothers to discover the inner strength and deep faith necessary to survive the dark, early days, of World War II in the Pacific.

Book Synopsis Music Was IT by : Susan Goldman Rubin
Download or read book Music Was IT written by Susan Goldman Rubin and published by Charlesbridge Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Life without music is unthinkable."—Leonard Bernstein, Findings When Lenny was two years old, his mother found that the only way to soothe her crying son was to turn on the Victrola. When his aunt passed on her piano to Lenny’s parents, the boy demanded lessons. When Lenny went to school, he had the most fun during "singing hours." But Lenny’s love of music was met with opposition from the start. Lenny’s father, a successful businessman, wanted Lenny to follow in his footsteps. Additionally, the classical music world of the 1930s and 1940s was dominated by Europeans—no American Jewish kid had a serious chance to make a name for himself in this field. Beginning with Lenny’s childhood in Boston and ending with his triumphant conducting debut at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic when he was just twenty-five, MUSIC WAS IT draws readers into the energetic, passionate, challenging, music-filled life of young Leonard Bernstein. Archival photographs, mostly from the Leonard Bernstein Collection at the Library of Congress, illustrate this fascinating biography, which also includes a foreword by Bernstein’s daughter Jamie. Extensive back matter includes biographies of important people in Bernstein’s life, as well as a discography of his music.
Download or read book The Poker Club written by Eldot and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eldot continues his five part romp at Camp Walker that began with Barr's Meadow. Julian's main objective, conquering his scoutmaster's heart, is unchanged, but he learns that it will take much longer than he planned. Meanwhile, he learns what he can from the other scouts. He works hard at his new job as assistant scribe. The romance between Tom and Nick is the major focus of Part 2. Distractions, challenges and obstacles occur along the way. Of course, those just happen to come in the guise of yet other characters that wish to romp with Tom. First among these is the exotic Geoff Staples, a sophisticated and savvy lad from the west coast and Hawaii. He is an experienced urban fox loose in a country chicken coop. He is witty, adventuresome, and outrageously daring. He and his two friends from Atlanta have a special Poker Club—that's strip poker—and they lure Tom into a game. The sophistication of that scene is contrasted with several others during the three days that constitute the time frame of Julian's Private Scrapbook, Part 2. Like a second son, the second part in a series has a mix of advantages and disadvantages. As long as the reader keeps this in mind, there is no reason for disappointment. The big advantage is not having to spend so much time introducing and describing. The “action” gets started early on, and there is room for lots more. The disadvantage is for readers who didn't read the first book or who have largely forgotten it. There are some built in helps for that in Part 2. A synopsis of part one is provided at the end of the book. The Index of Characters is purposely expanded to include a brief notation about events of importance to the character in Part 1. These do not equal a full reading, but they do provide an idea of what has happened to the individual. Being the second in a family of five is similar to another task that faces The Poker Club. Number two son has to share with number one the burden of setting an example for the next book; there are others coming along. Still, the fun and insights of Part 2 certainly stand on their own.

Download or read book On Assignment written by James R. Larison and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting adventure story with personal drama and high stakes, as well as a glimpse behind the scenes of the highly regarded National Geographic brand Jim and Elaine Larison spent years studying, exploring, and living in wild places, making more than thirty environmental films, most for the National Geographic Society. These films won more than forty international awards from leading environmental and broadcast organizations. This memoir tells the story behind the adventure and describes the rather substantial personal costs of this career. While shooting film in Alaska, Jim Larison narrowly survived a devastating airplane crash in the Bering Sea. Later, while filming on the Great Barrier Reef, the Larisons fought off an aggressive twelve-foot tiger shark. Midway through their careers, the Larisons were nearly swept to their deaths by an icefall while filming on Mount Robson. A thrilling adventure story, full of risk and personal conflict, On Assignment is also a touching look at the tender bonds that held the married couple together while they struggled to complete their many film assignments. The Larisons were changed by what they saw and what they captured on film: the destruction of forests, the death of coral reefs, and global warming. In the beginning, the Larisons wanted nothing more than to spend time in the wilderness. By the end, they were fighting for its very survival.
