Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between literature and religion is a crucial element in the definition of every cultural system. Literary traditions developed in such close connection with religious thought, symbolism, institutions and practices, that our understanding of both literary and religious expressions of an age necessarily depends on our consideration of their interconnectedness. This is particularly true for such a controversial age as the European Renaissance: a period that witnessed the rise of national states and the great Catholic-Protestant schism; a rediscovery of classical antiquity and a new approach to the biblical text; the flourishing of literature and art and strong politico-religious censorship; a definite advancement in philosophical, scientific and political thought, and a profound redefinition of the relationships and boundaries between the sacred and profane. By taking into account different literary and cultural systems, and being open to a plurality of approaches, this volume explores the relationship between literature and religion in a period crucial to the development of European cultural identity, offering both innovative readings of world-famous works and a (re)discovery of less familiar texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Thomas Aquinas never commented on the Song of Songs. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate, however, that he meditated on it and absorbed it, so that the words of the Song are for him a familiar repertoire and a theological source. His work contains numerous citations of the Song, not counting his borrowings of vocabulary and images from it. In total, there are 312 citations of the Song in Aquinas’s corpus, along with citations of the Song that are found in citations that Aquinas makes of other authors (as for example in the Catena aurea). Understanding the purpose and placement of these citations significantly enriches our understanding of Aquinas as a theologian, biblical exegete, and spiritual master. The book contains an Appendix listing and contextualizing each citation. The study of the citations of the Song especially illuminates Aquinas’s spiritual doctrine. By citing the Song, Aquinas emphasizes the spiritual life’s path of dynamic ascent, through an ever increasing participation in the mystery of the nuptial union of Christ and the Church through love. The Song also highlights the eschatological tension or yearning present in the spiritual life, which is ordered to the fullness of beatific vision. Although Aquinas’s theology is highly “intellectual,” by citing the Song he brings out the affective character of the spiritual life and conveys the centrality of love in the soul’s journey toward Christ. He also draws together contemplation and preaching through his use of the Song.

Book excerpt: This volume contains some of the theological writings of Erasmus, viz. a sermon on God's immense mercy, a comparison of a virgin and a martyr, a sermon on the young Jesus, a short treatise on the sorrow of Jesus in Gethsemane, the adhortation to read the Bible, which is one of the prefaces of Erasmus' New Testament project, and a commentary on two hymns by Prudentius on Christmas and Epiphany. The volume shows some aspects of Erasmus' theology and spirituality, embedded in the Roman Catholic Church and the liturgy of the mass.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of all facets of musical life in sixteenth-century Venice. It addresses the city’s institutions (churches, confraternities, and academies) against the background of public and private occasions of music making. Supported by a generous collection of archival, literary, and iconographical sources, it treats both ceremonial life in the Serenissima and private forms of patronage. The Companion also addresses the dense web of musical activity (from chapel masters and singers to instrumentalists and instrument makers to music printers and theorists) and the rich variety of styles and musical genres (the frottola, the madrigal, motets and masses, instrumental music, polychoral music, Venetian-language polyphony), broadening the geographical perspective beyond the Veneto to Istria and Dalmatia. Contributors are Rodolfo Baroncini, Sherri Bishop, Bonnie J. Blackburn, David Bryant, Ivano Cavallini, Paolo Da Col, Daniel Donnelly, Rebecca Edwards, Iain Fenlon, Jonathan Glixon, Don Harrán (†), Jeffrey Kurtzman, Giulio M. Ongaro, Francesco Passadore, Elena Quaranta, Katelijne Schiltz, Eleanor Selfridge-Field, and Giovanni Zanovello.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Gregory the Great was Pope from 590 to 604, launching the famous Gregorian Mission, the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxons of England to Christianity. The epithet “the Great” reflects Gregory’s status as a celebrated writer as well as a ruler. The fourth and final of the traditional Latin Fathers of the Church, Gregory is now regarded as the first exponent of a truly medieval, sacramental spirituality. His Commentary on Job and his handbook for rulers, Pastoral Rule, were extremely popular treatises throughout the middle ages, while the Dialogues feature a compelling life of Saint Benedict and his many miracles. Gregory’s works provided practical wisdom and enlightenment for the people of the Dark Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This comprehensive eBook presents Gregory the Great’s collected works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Gregory’s life and works * Features the major works of Gregory I, in both English translation and the original Latin * Concise introductions to the major texts * Excellent formatting of the texts * Includes rare sermons by Gregory, first time in digital print * Features three bonus biographies, including the Venerable Bede’s account of Gregory’s life — immerse yourself in the Saint’s ancient world * Scholarly ordering of texts into chronological order and literary genres Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to explore our range of Ancient Classics titles or buy the entire series as a Super Set CONTENTS: The Translations Commentary on Job (Translated by J.
