L'idée a traversé les cultures et les époques : après avoir tenté d'apprendre notre langage aux animaux dans les années 1960, les chercheurs se sont engagés à décoder le leur. Ils se sont alors rendu compte que nos langages avaient une parenté plus étroite qu'on ne le pensait. Leurs " conversations " ne sont pas " bruit " ou " grincement ". Elles racontent des histoires, des apprentissages ; elles expriment des émotions, des intentions ; elles forment une pensée et une identité. Comme nous, les animaux peuvent apprendre une langue étrangère, échanger dans des dialectes régionaux, transmettre des informations, désigner des éléments pour décrire leur monde, utiliser une syntaxe, apprendre à parler à leur progéniture... De même, ils écoutent, déchiffrent et s'adressent aux hommes de différentes manières : communication vocale et acoustique, échange visuel par le biais de postures. Les technologies promettent pour l'avenir des outils qui nous permettront de nous comprendre mutuellement, de traduire leur langue et la nôtre, et de saisir ainsi leur point de vue. Ces découvertes ouvrent des perspectives révolutionnaires et demain, qui sait, les animaux revendiqueront peut-être haut et fort leurs droits.
