Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrewsbury station, located at the junction of the lines from Chester, Crewe, Wolverhampton, Hereford and Aberystwyth is a busy and interesting railway center for the enthusiast. Many train movements are still controlled by semaphore signals operated from a number of signal boxes, including the largest remaining operational mechanical signal box in the world at Severn Bridge Junction. Nevertheless, modernization has been gradually sweeping away much of the railway infrastructure, both at Shrewsbury and in the surrounding area, as it has been everywhere else. This book looks at Shrewsbury itself, the lines that radiate from there, and the trains that ran on them, in the late twentieth and the early part of the twenty-first century. During this time period, much more general railway infrastructure and mechanical signaling was still in use, and locomotive-hauled trains were abundant, using a variety of motive power, including Classes 25, 31, 33, 37 and 47. The various freight lines that saw traffic are also visited. The railway from Newport through Hereford and Shrewsbury to Chester, in particular, saw regular steam-hauled special trains, a few of which are illustrated here. Preserved railways in the area are not forgotten, including the Severn Valley Railway which once ran from Sutton Bridge Junction at Shrewsbury to Hartlebury, between Kidderminster and Droitwich Spa.

One of the most scenic trainlines in the United Kingdom, the Cambrian Line carries passengers through mountains and market towns, offering views of castles, countryside, and World Heritage sites as it makes its way to the breathtaking Welsh coast. This volume offers a brief history of the Cambrian Railways’ early years, followed by a magnificent and comprehensive set of early photographs of Cambrian engines, Oswestry Works, and sumptuous Welsh scenery. The book is written by British Railways expert David Maidment together with Paul Carpenter, who brings the story of the Cambrian up to date. Book Synopsis Lost Lines of England and Wales by : Tom Ferris
Download or read book Lost Lines of England and Wales written by Tom Ferris and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straddling the border between England and Wales, the railway linking Shrewsbury to Chester has been serving the communities along its length since 1848, as well as being, for over a century, a key component of the Great Western Railway's main line from the Mersey to London. It still remains busy with passenger trains and some freight, so it is not lost in the conventional sense, however, this pictorial journey along what remains an attractive and scenic line focuses on its heyday in the age of steam hauled-trains. Whilst much of the infrastructure of the steam age has been swept away, the line is still busy and remains an important transport link.
