Book excerpt: If culture is suspect, what of cultural theory? At a moment when culture's traditional caretakers -- humanism, philosophy, anthropology, and the nation-state -- are undergoing crisis and mutation, this volume charts the tensions and contradictions in the development and deployment of the concept of culture. A genuinely interdisciplinary venture, In Near Ruins brings together respected writers from the fields of history, anthropology, literary criticism, and communications. Together their essays present an intriguing picture of "culture" at the edges of humanism, of the politics of critical inquiry amid current social transformations, of the status and practice of historical knowledge in an age of theory. Skeptical of the concept of culture but fascinated with cultural forms, the authors take up diverse topics, from debates over sexuality in the contemporary United States to relations between empire, capitalism, and gender in nineteenth-century Britain; from poverty in U.S. inner cities to violence in war-torn Sri Lanka; from the operation of nostalgia on cultural practices in Japan to anthropological forms of state power in Indonesia and the writing of history in India. Linked by a common urge to think through the aesthetics and politics of particular social relations amid a variety of globalizing forces -- revolution, colonialism, nationalism, and the disciplinary institutions of the academy itself -- these writers contribute to the ongoing work of remapping the terrain of cultural analysis and reevaluating the stakes in such a daunting effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramjanmabhoomi' means the birthplace of Lord Rama who is the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. The birth place of Lord Rama is situated in Ayodhya in the state of utter Pradesh which makes Ayodhya one of most sacred places for Hindus. In 1528, Babar who had invaded India, got the Ram temple demolished and built a mosque like structure over it. Since then, Hindus have been trying to get this place back and build a Ram temple on it. Many Hindus sacrificed their lives for this cause. In recent times, the movement to build a Ram temple was launched in mid-1980s. It became one of the defining moments for India as it brought a paradigm shift in Indian politics too. The case to build a Ram temple at ramjanmabhoomi also has the distinction of being the longest running legal battle in the history of the world. The matter was finally decided by the Supreme Court in 2019 paving way for the construction of a Ram temple at ramjanmabhoomi. This book explores all these facets of 'ramjanmabhoomi' and brings together at one place all the important details of this grand and tumultuous saga. It starts with the birth of Lord Rama and culminates with the verdict of the Supreme Court exploring how this saga unfolded on battle fields, archaeological sites and in Court rooms and newsrooms. Backed by historical documents, scriptures, anecdotes and documented debates on this issue, this book takes you on a journey which spans over thousands of years and helps one understand the historicity as well as significance of ramjanmabhoomi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True and devout Hindus believe that Bhagvan Sri Rama was born in Ayodhya, the then capital of a flourishing kingdom of the Suryavansa dynasty. Rama is venerated as Maryada Purushottam, and worshipped by Hindus everywhere. Sri Rama was the first truly national king of India, above regional, varna, or jati adherence. At his birth spot in Ayodhya, there stood a temple, but it was demolished by invading Islamic marauders and a mosque was constructed on the same spot that came to be known as "Babri Masjid." In Chapter X of the Report of the Archeological Survey of India, NW and Oudh (1889), it is mentioned that Babri Mosque "was built in A.D. 1528 by Mir Khan on the very spot where the old temple of Janmasthan of Ram Chandra was standing." It is now well established by GPRS- directed excavations done under the Allahabad High Court monitoring and verification in 2002-03, that a large temple did exist below where that Babri Masjid structure once stood. Inscriptions found during excavations describe it as a temple of Vishnu Hari who had killed the demon king Dasanan [Ravana]. This book, therefore, explores how, through legal measures and by consensus building amongst the vast majority of the Indian people, the Rama Temple can be re-built on the original spot where it had stood nearly half a millennium ago.

Readers will benefit immensely after reading, studying and contemplating on these resolutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how religious travel in India is transforming religious identities and self-constructions. In an increasingly global world where convenient modes of travel have opened the door to international and intraregional tourism and brought together people from different religious and ethnic communities, religious journeying in India has become the site of evolving and often paradoxical forms of self-construction. Through ethnographic reflections, the contributors to this volume explore religious and nonreligious motivations for religious travel in India and show how pilgrimages, missionary travel, the exportation of cultural art forms, and leisure travel among coreligionists are transforming not only religious but also regional, national, transnational, and personal identities. The volume engages with central themes in South Asian studies such as gender, exile, and spirituality; a variety of religions, including Sikhism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity; and understudied regions and emerging places of pilgrimage such as Manipur and Maharashtra. “It’s rare to find such diverse accounts of religious travel collected in a single volume, where scholars’ engagements with individual places of pilgrimage in India and with the journeys surrounding them are truly in conversation with one another. For readers, it makes for a deeply enlightening journey. It also raises an interesting question: Is the reality of India powerful enough that it absorbs divergent expressions of religious tourism, making of them a common fabric? Here, so unusually, readers have the materials to decide.” — John Stratton Hawley, author of A Storm of Songs: India and the Idea of the Bhakti Movement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 9 November 2019, the Supreme Court, in a unanimous verdict, cleared the way for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. As we look back, we will be able to see how much we have lost over Ayodhya through the years of conflict. If the loss of a mosque is preservation of faith, if the establishment of a temple is emancipation of faith, we can all join together in celebrating faith in the Constitution. Sometimes, a step back to accommodate is several steps forward towards our common destiny. Through this book, Salman Khurshid explores how the greatest opportunity that the judgment offers is a reaffirmation of India as a secular society.
