Book excerpt: In this lucid and enlightening account, Nityananda Misra takes the reader on a whirlwind journey through the modern Kumbha Mela, the largest pilgrimage and the biggest festival in the world attended by crores of people. The book details the origin and symbolism of the Kumbha Mela, its dates and venues, and its awe-inspiring organization that has been called a wonder of modern-day management. It provides a personal close-up view of the visitors at the largest human gathering on earth-the sadhus, the kalpavasis, the tirthayatris, and members of new-age Hindu movements. The author sheds considerable light on the cultural aspects (literature, arts, and music) of the Kumbha and argues how the mela is perhaps the most diverse and inclusive human gathering and how the tradition is immortal, as if made so by the nectar of immortality which is believed to have spilled on the sites of the Kumbha Mela. Throughout the book, the author shows how diverse participants come and work together at the Kumbha Mela following the spirit of samgacchadhvam (“come together”)-a spirit that permeates the mela in his view. The author captures his personal experience too in Prayaga, Nashik, and Ujjain, leaving an anecdotal touch to the narrative. The final chapter presents an overview of the upcoming Ardha Kumbha Mela in Prayaga in 2019.

The poem THAT INN ON THE HILL SIDE ROAD narrates a fictional story of greed, lust and murders and also talks of spirituality in its background. The poet explains THE FATE, WISE, SAINTS AND DEVOTEES in his rhythmical style. TEARS OF GANGES highlights the spiritual values of the river which one should remember before disposing untreated wastes into it. The poem YOU ARE IN LOVE WITH HER indicates the symptoms when someone falls in love. LOVE-BLUFF exposes the pathetic condition when the so-called love is only meant for ego satisfaction. The poet has dedicated his poem MY MOTHER to his parents and STREET DOGS to the love and affection of his pets. ON YOUR BIRTHDAY reminds the rich birthday boy regarding his social obligation to take a modest gift to the poor. In the poem TO WILLIAM WORDSWORTH ON THE REAPERS SONG the poet has imagined the thoughts that could be in the mind of the girl in the famous poem The solitary reaper of William Wordsworth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many friends had urged me to write my autobiography. I had started writing last year and now I have a lot of time to complete this project. I have decided that after concluding my autobiography, I would give complete attention to ‘Vishranti’. It is a pleasure writing my autobiography. It feels good to revisit and rewind through my thoughts and through my pen – the life that I lived, journey that I traversed for many years, sights seen and experienced and losses and gains along the way. Last year when I started working on my autobiography, I was not sure about disclosing these incidents since some senior leaders would not be too pleased. But I am determined now, since I am out of active politics and my presence in politics is going to be in name only. I have been telling my friends that I am going to be a guest artist in politics now. I was a politician earlier so my freedom of expression had to be restricted. Now, I am a writer first and then someone else, therefore it is my right to enjoy and employ a writer’s freedom of expression. I have fully utilised that right in writing my autobiography, and many things unsaid have been laid out in the open. I have lived my life. I have lived fully and joyously. I have lived this life and told its story and shared my life experiences in abundant details. I will dedicate the rest of my life to God Almighty in Vivekanand Sewa Kendra. I will wait for the moment when I fulfil all my duties and go back to where I came from. Truthfully speaking, I would go smiling and laughing with a song in my heart and a spring in my step.

Book excerpt: Saints and sages say that love is devotion and devotion is love. Their deepest desire unlocked the mysteries of the spellbound heart, where each beat was used to create that garland of songs, to gift to their Beloved. And so these revelations are shared by Sage Narad, who imparts these secrets, which purify one's heart to receive the sweetest melody of the most blessed of loves. His clear instructions prepare the aspiring lover as an offering into the arms of that adorable Cowherd Boy of Vrindavan, Krishn, the One who stole countless hearts and minds with just a glance from His lotus eye or by the mere touch of His beautiful lips to a flute. Those who are desirous of Krishn's love can realise and relish Him through the bond of sacred love. The Narad Bhakti Sutra is the hymn of this sacred love, a song which concludes in a blissful union of the lover and her Beloved.

Book excerpt: Early modern India—a period extending from the fifteenth to the late eighteenth century—saw dramatic cultural, religious, and political changes as it went from Sultanate to Mughal to early colonial rule. Witness to the rise of multiple literary and devotional traditions, this period was characterized by immense political energy and cultural vibrancy. Text and Tradition in Early Modern North India brings together recent scholarship on the languages, literatures, and religious traditions of northern India. It focuses on the rise of vernacular languages as vehicles for literary expression and historical and religious self-assertion, and particularly attends to ways in which these regional spoken languages connect with each other and their cosmopolitan counterparts. Hindu, Muslim, and Jain idioms emerge in new ways, and the effect of the volume as a whole is to show that they belong to a single complex cultural conversation.

He is the awesome architect of His age and the illuminating mentor whose discourse, the Bhagavad Gita, is regarded as a light unto all ages. The book Krishna: A Journey through the Lands & Legends of Krishna describes well known tourist places and narrates the famous legends associated with them. It also presents places that may not be known to a common man but have witnessed the glorious pastimes of Lord Krishna and associated legends. It is an innovative book that has a happy blending of a travelogue with mythological reminiscences. The centres visited are placed in a setting which gives them a tinge of human emotions; brick and marble speak to the visitor and tell stories. The past and the present mingle, and the visit becomes a memorable experience.
