Photographs from the Harlow family collection help to document the early history of the town and many of its oldest buildings. The Higgins collection covers subjects somewhat more recent. The wonderful set of views, taken just prior to the building of what today is known as Route 9 in 1930, gives us great insight into the many changes that have taken place since then, courtesy of Mr. Frank Morrill. The town of Shrewsbury continues to evolve even todaya number of development projects are in the works or are in the planning stage. These include several medical/retail complexes, a large-scale UPS facility, and a new elementary school. As the town changes, hopefully many of the remaining historic structures will be preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Book excerpt: The Shrewsbury area was one of the first Pennsylvania settlements west of the Susquehanna River. Located midway between Harrisburg and Baltimore, Maryland, an important north-south transportation route known as the Potocas Trail ran through the town's center. What began as a quiet farming area in the late 1700s developed into a commerce center of furniture and sewing factories by the late 1800s. Today, its central business area, now on the National Register of Historic Places, is the antique hub of southern York County. Shrewsbury continues to provide peaceful living for many who work in the Baltimore area.

Book excerpt: Although well-known as the birthplace of Charles Darwin and for its idyllic location on the River Severn, in footballing terms Shrewsbury was still a backwater in the late 1970s. But Town's promotion for the first time in their history to Football League Division Two in 1979 changed all that. The 'Spirit of 79' propelled them into the limelight with a famous FA Cup run and an unlikely Third Division title triumph. Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham would now be heading to Gay Meadow, and predictably Shrewsbury were the pundits' favourites for relegation. Come On You Blues is a vivid, first-hand account of Town's inaugural campaign in Division Two in 1979/80, as seen through the eyes of a 15-year-old fan and proud owner of a £12 junior season ticket. The book recalls the thrills and anguish of following a small team from Shropshire battling for survival in the second tier, and defying the odds by trouncing footballing giants, upstaging local rivals and scrubbing up well against exciting, up-and-coming sides.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Times in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts: Gleanings From History and Tradition New World which was at that time attracting so many adventurers from beyond the sea. Isaac Johnson had gathered together all that he had, and taken his portion of his grandfather's estate to take himself and his frail young wife to America and establish there a home for themselves. After their arrival, he made himself useful to the government and received as remuneration a grant of several hundred acres of land lying in the northwest part of what was afterwards called Shrewsbury. The Lady Arbella found refuge for a time in Salem in the home of friends, but she soon faded away like a delicate tropical flower in the cold, hard life which she found in New England. Her amiable and heart-broken husband followed her in one month, his grave being the first In King's Chapel burying ground in Boston. It is pleasant to feel that the story of the charming Lady Arbella is even so remotely connected with any part of our town, though it is probable that neither of them ever saw the Shrewsbury land. Book Synopsis Open Midnight by : Brooke Williams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open Midnight weaves two parallel stories about the great wilderness—Brooke Williams’s year alone with his dog ground truthing wilderness maps of southern Utah, and that of his great-great-great-grandfather, who in 1863 made his way with a group of Mormons from England across the wilderness almost to Utah, dying a week short. The book is also about two levels of history—personal, as represented by William Williams, and collective, as represented by Charles Darwin, who lived in Shrewsbury, England, at about the same time as Williams. As Brooke Williams begins researching the story of his oldest known ancestor, he realizes that he has few facts. He wonders if a handful of dates can tell the story of a life, writing, “If those points were stars in the sky, we would connect them to make a constellation, which is what I’ve made with his life by creating the parts missing from his story.” Thus William Williams becomes a kind of spiritual guide, a shamanlike consciousness that accompanies the author on his wilderness and life journeys, and that appears at pivotal points when the author is required to choose a certain course. The mysterious presence of his ancestor inspires the author to create imagined scenes in which Williams meets Darwin in Shrewsbury, sowing something central in the DNA that eventually passes to Brooke Williams, whose life has been devoted to nature and wilderness. Brooke Williams’s inventive and vivid prose pushes boundaries and investigates new ways toward knowledge and experience, inviting readers to think unconventionally about how we experience reality, spirituality, and the wild. The author draws on Jungian psychology to relate how our consciousness of the wild is culturally embedded in our psyche, and how a deep connection to the wild can promote emotional and psychological well-being. Williams's narrative goes beyond a call for conservation, but in the vein of writers like Joanna Macy, Bill Plotkin, David Abram, the author argues passionately for the importance of wildness is to the human soul. Reading Williams's inspired prose provides a measure of hope for protecting the beautiful places that we all need to thrive. Open Midnight is grounded in the present by Williams’s descriptions of the Utah lands he explores. He beautifully evokes the feeling of being solitary in the wild, at home in the deepest sense, in the presence of the sublime. In doing so, he conveys what Gary Snyder calls “a practice of the wild” more completely than any other work. Williams also relates an insider’s view of negotiations about wilderness protection. As an advocate working for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, he represents a minority in meetings designed to open wilderness lands to roads and hunting. He portrays the mindset of the majority of Utah’s citizens, who argue passionately for their rights to use their lands however they wish. The phrase “open midnight,” as Williams sees it, evokes the time between dusk and dawn, between where we’ve been and where we’re going, and the unconscious where all possibilities are hidden.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, From Its Settlement in 1717 to 1829: With Other Matter Relating Thereto Not Before Published, Including an Extensive Family Register In pursuing the inquiry, my information has been extended, and my curiosity gratified. By the records of olden time, I have been introduced not only to the ancient dead, whose works live in history, and whose deeds are related in story, but made acquainted with numerous family lines of subsequent generations and their wide spread connections. In this compilation I introduce them to the reader, with an ao count of some of their descendants, their families, &c., and of others, whose remote ancestry I could not, or had not time to trace. What reflections have not arisen in my mind, while pre paring it! What will not be produced in his, who reads it The aged will meditate upon it, and recall to mind many things they had forgotten, if they ever knew them; while the young, with more buoyant feelings, perusing it for information, will find it an instructive compendium of genealogy, and some of the historical matter entertaining, when drawn around the evening fireside, where more frequently occur an interchange of thoughts and a participation in feelings, that give a zest to amusement.
