Book excerpt: Three kinds of warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives (Sasobit, Evotherm, and CWA) were used in asphalt-rubber stone matrix asphalt (AR-SMA) to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of AR-SMA mixtures. In hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture designs with the same air voids, the compaction temperatures of AR-SMA mixtures with different WMA additives were determined. The wheel tracking test, low temperature beam bending test, and indirect tensile test were conducted in order to evaluate the high temperature performance in terms of the resistance to rutting, the low temperature performance in terms of the resistance to cracking, and the moisture susceptibility of AR-SMA mixtures with WMA additives. The results indicate that the addition of Sasobit can improve high temperature performance significantly relative to the control mixture (AR-SMA without WMA additive), whereas the other additives yield no significant differences. Three WMA additives have significant effects on low-temperature performance, but they do not significantly increase moisture susceptibility relative to the control mixture.

Book excerpt: In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the effects of mixing temperature, binder content, and dust content on the performance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Mixes produced at different mixing temperatures and with or without added polymer modified binder (P(subscript b)) and/or bag house dust (BHD) were evaluated. Two different types of specimens: laboratory mixed laboratory compacted, and plant mixed laboratory compacted were evaluated by Cantabro Mass Loss (CML) testing in an unaged condition or after a laboratory conditioning protocol (CP) was applied. Additional P(subscript b) and BHD were added to plant produced mixes in the laboratory before mixing. Results showed that mixing temperature affected behavior in some cases. Specimens with lower air void (V (subscript a)) levels performed better than those with higher Va levels. Additional polymer modified binder and BHD, when added together, meaningfully improved mixture results in terms of CML values.

Book excerpt: Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a relatively new paving mixture in the U.S. which shows promise as a tough, stable, rut-resistant surface mix in certain applications. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) established a Technical Working Group (TWG) composed of representatives from Industry, the states, the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), and FHWA to develop a set of model guidelines for materials and construction. The TWG also undertook the development of a research agenda, to monitor performance on completed SMA projects, and to assist states and contractors in SMA mix design and construction. This publication is a product of the TWG and provides general guidelines for the use of SMA paving mixtures, including composition of an SMA mixture, aggregates and additives, production, hauling and paving, and compaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, Virginia launched an expanded commitment to stone matrix asphalt (SMA). By the end of 2004, contracts that encompassed nearly 400,000 tons of SMA had been awarded and most of the material produced and placed. During this 2-year timeframe, more construction districts and contractors were engaged in the design, production, and placement of SMA than at any time in the history of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Most were experiencing it for the first time. This report documents many aspects of the 2003/2004 SMA "implementation initiative." It summarizes and presents detailed information on costs and quantities, volumetric properties, compaction, permeability, aggregate quality, and initial functional character (ride and friction) for SMA pavements placed during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. SMA is a complex and expensive HMA material. Carefully documenting (or "baselining") today's experiences and understanding the consequences in terms of lifetime costing are important keys to the continued successful deployment of the best HMA technologies for Virginia. If the cost savings associated with SMA (as identified by the National Asphalt Pavement Association) continue and are applied to only the 14% of VDOT's annual program allotted to SMA in 2005, the fruits of this research can contribute to more than $14 million per year in savings.

Book excerpt: Conventional stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is being increasingly used in highways and expressways because it provides high rutting resistance, good skid resistance, and noise reduction for heavily trafficked roads. However, the conventional SMA mixture requires high mixing and compacting temperatures to create a suitable coating between the polymer-modified asphalt and large size of aggregate. Warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technology is being extended to provide significant economic benefits when applied to heat sensitive mixture, such as polymer-modified mixture, to reduce mixing and compacting temperatures. In this study, the performance characteristics of SMA-WMA mixture using new polyethylene wax-based WMA additive were evaluated against the conventional SMA mixture without additive, in terms of the moisture susceptibility, viscoelastic properties, rutting resistance at high temperature, fatigue resistance, and crack resistance at low temperature. The mix design was carried out in the laboratory for the conventional SMA mixture, and a similar composition was adopted for the SMA-WMA mixture (with the incorporation of 1.5 % WMA additive in the asphalt binder weight), in order to evaluate the influence of the performance characteristics of the resulting SMA mixture. Drain-Down and Cantabro test results of SMA-WMA mixture meet the requirement of the relevant criteria. Compared to the conventional SMA, the mixtures containing WMA additive show superior performance in moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance at high temperature, fatigue resistance at intermediate temperature, and crack resistance at low temperature. Therefore, this implies that the WMA additive is effective in reducing the production temperature, without compromising the performance of the SMA-WMA mixture.

Book excerpt: Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

Book excerpt: Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) is a gap-graded hot mix asphalt with a high percentage of coarse aggregate and a high asphalt content. SMA is the typical gap-graded mixture used in Virginia that is intended to maximize rutting resistance and durability with a stable stone-on-stone skeleton held together by a rich mixture of asphalt binder. The field performance of SMA in Virginia has been generally excellent. However, several SMA pavements have undergone premature failure, and factors related to both pavement structure and materials have been identified as causes for the poor performance. A detailed forensic study recommended a specification change for gradation of SMA-9.5 mixtures to provide improved stability. The Virginia Department of Transportation adopted a new aggregate gradation in 2012 for these mixtures. Aggregate morphological characteristics, including sphericity, flatness ratio, elongation ratio, angularity, and texture, have been recognized as major factors influencing the performance of aggregate and asphalt mixtures. The current study demonstrated via laboratory methods the stability of mixtures conforming to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s new grading specification and the effects of aggregate morphology and asphalt binder properties on stability. SMA mixtures designed and produced by different contractors using aggregates from different quarries in Virginia were included in the study. SMA mixtures and samples of the aggregates used in production were obtained for laboratory evaluation of the structural stability and aggregate characteristics of the mixtures. All mixtures met the criterion of VCAMIX
