Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Biographies of the Worthies of Worcestershire It was originally intended that short notices of "Persons Eminent in Art, Literature, and Science" should form part of the Victoria History of Worcestershire; but in its progress this splondid work attained such largo dimensions that the biographical section had to be eliminated, and the materials already collected have been used partly for this present volume. The Dictionary of National Biography has set up for all our eminent men and women a monument more durable than marble. The aim of this little book is to do the same on a small scale for Worcestershire; to satisfy the commemorative instinct of humanity, and to serve as a book of reference. The majority of the names are already dealt with at some length in the sixty-five volumes of the D.N.B., which should be found on the shelves of every Public Library. An asterisk prefixed to a name refers the reader to this wonderful work; and only such facts, chiefly local, are given here, as will make the outline complete in itself. Other sources of information to which we are largely indebted are J. Chambers' Biography of Worcester (1820), W. R. Williams' Members for Worcestershire (1897), Smith and Onslow's Diocesan History of Worcester (1883), the Victoria History, Nash's Worcestershire, T. C. Tuherville's Worcestershire in the 19th Century, Complete Peerage, by G.E.C., Berrow's Worcester Journal, Worcester Herald, Ac. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and why Australia's legal system fails Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 'Russell Marks unravels a national tragedy. From the front line he delivers a first-rate, firsthand account of how so many First Nations people end up in jail, again and again.' --Patrick Dodson, Labor Senator for Western Australia Indigenous Australians are the most incarcerated people on the planet. Indigenous men are fifteen times more likely to be locked up than their non-Indigenous counterparts; Indigenous women are twenty-one times more likely. Featuring vivid case studies and drawing on a deep sense of history, Black Lives, White Law explores Australia's extraordinary record of locking up First Nations people. It examines Australia's system of criminal justice -- the web of laws and courts and police and prisons -- and how that system interacts with First Nations people and communities. How is it that so many are locked up? Why have imprisonment rates increased in recent years? Is this situation fair? Almost everyone agrees that it's not. And yet it keeps getting worse. In this groundbreaking book, Russell Marks investigates Australia's incarceration epidemic. What would happen if the institutions of Australian justice received the same scrutiny to which they routinely subject Indigenous Australians? 'How should we tell the story of Indigenous incarceration in Australia? Only part of it is in the numbers. And we can't get very far by looking at the crimes that see Indigenous offenders punished by courts and sentenced to prison ... To really grapple with the problem of Indigenous incarceration requires us to accept the possibility that there might be another way. That the current state of affairs -- where entire families sometimes spend time behind bars -- is not inevitable.' --Russell Marks Shortlisted, Australian Political Book of the Year 2023 Shortlisted, Prime Minister's Literary Awards 2023 'This passionate, timely book shines a critical light on First Nations' incarceration rates in Australia, bringing history into the present with a sense of urgency and purpose ... Powerfully interventionist while avoiding polemic, this book reminds us that frontier violence has a present as well as a past.' --Judges' comments, Prime Minister's Literary Awards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a usual kind of book about banking or bankers. The authors were interested in the lives of women who joined in partnership banking. These women began working in what had been a male preserve before ideas of feminism and women's rights had suggested this as a possibility. They were feminists before feminism existed! Responsibility as partners in banks did not absolve them from their duties as wives and mothers. So we hear about domestic matters - childbirth, sickness, dinner services, furniture, watercolour painting and riding accidents. There is also a background of links with commerce and business which made the British economy so vibrant and dynamic at this formative time. The banking industry grew and developed in response to the needs of enterprise in shipping, textile manufacture, mining, engineering and general commerce. In short, these bankers created the art of multi-tasking. The banks and bankers described here came from different backgrounds within the parameters of comfortable middle-class families, rooted in local communities and enterprises. This book is full of banking history and characters and mercifully light on references to subprime lending, liquidity ratios, securitisation, or even bonuses. This is an excellent time for it.

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major, revisionist reference work explains for the first time how the Stationers' Company acquired both a charter and a nationwide monopoly of printing. In the most detailed and comprehensive investigation of the London book trade in any period, Peter Blayney systematically documents the story from 1501, when printing first established permanent roots inside the City boundaries, until the Stationers' Company was incorporated by royal charter in 1557. Having exhaustively re-examined original sources and scoured numerous archives unexplored by others in the field, Blayney radically revises accepted beliefs about such matters as the scale of native production versus importation, privileges and patents, and the regulation of printing by the Church, Crown and City. His persistent focus on individuals - most notably the families, rivals and successors of Richard Pynson, John Rastell and Robert Redman - keeps this study firmly grounded in the vivid lives and careers of early Tudor Londoners.
