Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the Enemy uses stories of personal relationships to explore the behaviour of ordinary people during Stalin's terror. Communist Party leaders strongly encouraged ordinary citizens and party members to 'unmask the hidden enemy' and people responded by flooding the secret police and local authorities with accusations. By 1937, every workplace was convulsed by hyper-vigilance, intense suspicion and the hunt for hidden enemies. Spouses, co-workers, friends and relatives disavowed and denounced each other. People confronted hideous dilemmas. Forced to lie to protect loved ones, they struggled to reconcile political imperatives and personal loyalties. Workplaces were turned into snake pits. The strategies that people used to protect themselves - naming names, pre-emptive denunciations, and shifting blame - all helped to spread the terror. Inventing the Enemy, a history of the terror in five Moscow factories, explores personal relationships and individual behaviour within a pervasive political culture of 'enemy hunting'.

Book excerpt: Who’s your biggest enemy? Possibly you? Enemy Mode is an immensely damaging brain state that occurs in everyday life. In enemy mode, a person sees and experiences others as adversaries. Living in this mode poisons family and community bonds. It contributes to social stress, business failure, divorce, alienation, domestic violence, crime, racism, and international violence. Social media magnifies the impact of enemy mode toward almost all topics or persons imaginable. Longtime author and neuropsychologist Dr. Jim Wilder explains how the brain develops enemy mode and searches for ways to get the brain to “refriend.” Since a brain in enemy mode cannot tell when someone is trying to help, it rejects or attacks its allies, including refrienders. Wilder puts his years of research to the test in assessing the impossible task put forth by the Christian faith: to love one’s enemies. After being trained in enemy mode through the military, business, and even friendships, retired Brigadier General Ray Woolridge comes alongside Wilder, bringing the reader on his journey of learning to refriend. He interviews leaders in sports, business, the military, law enforcement, politics, health care, and education, assessing the enemy mode impact on lives and culture. Can Wilder and Woolridge figure out how enemy mode works and craft a solution? And can they get people and institutions to implement those solutions? This book is for all who desire to be better equipped to face the barrage of daily relational stressors that come at them. It’s for all who long for more harmonious relationships at home, in the workplace, and in their communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a boy cries, his father trains him in the way of the ancients. He is taught to "man up," and rejects anything feminine in his life. Thus he begins the process of becoming a man in the image of his culture. This transformation comes at the expense of his own calling to reflect the image of God. Men and women, however, were both created in this divine image and were meant to live in harmony rather than enmity. Recently, influential Christian writers and leaders have suggested that men have become too feminized and need to return to their calling to be "real men." Clark believes that this "new masculinity" is in reality a return to the way of the ancients. Drawing from his experiences as a minister, domestic- and sexual- violence prevention advocate, and community leader, Clark suggests that Jesus came to redefine masculinity and resist the cultural view of manhood, power, and oppression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I searched all over Google “How to write an introduction for a novel?” and to be honest I found nothing. So, I have written by opening my heart, every word is written from my heart. I read many books, all books speak about strengths, peace, success, wealth and health too. But I didn’t find any book which speaks on our enemies. We know that half of our time will be spent on thinking about our enemies and tackling them. So, I decided to write a book on enemies. The story starts from childhood to old age explains all the incidents which a common man faces and coming to know all his enemies. The specialties of the book are it helps to find your real enemies, the other specialty is there are tasks which you have to do. This is a novel that is not just a story but some tasks that need to perform. One more specialty is I wrote this book when I was 18 and published it when I was 19. I am hundred percent sure after you read this book, you will never feel that this is a book written by a teenager. This book is written in a very simple language which can be completed in just 1 week. This a book which doesn’t require a dictionary to read, everything is written in simple language. My friends and the publishers read this book in just one week. This is the best book for a beginner to start habituating to reading novels. I didn’t see any book which was written in this simpler language. There might be some books written in simpler language but are very rare. Reading 180 pages of a book may look difficult to complete in one week. You are right but not this book. Don’t keep any doubts in mind just start reading the book. The book may seem boring in middle but has a very good meaning in the story.

Book excerpt: With the approach of the First World War, the German community in Britain began to be assailed by a combination of government measures and popular hostility which resulted in attacks against individuals with German connections and confiscation of their property. From May 1915, a policy of wholesale internment and repatriation was to reduce the German population by more than half of its pre-war figure. The author of this study charts the growth of the German community in Britain before detailing the story of its destruction under the chauvinistic intolerance which gripped the country during the Great War.

Book excerpt: When Enemy Combatant was first published in the United States in hardcover in 2006 it garnered sensational reviews, and its author was featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, on National Public Radio, and on ABC News. A second generation British Muslim, Begg had been held by the U.S. military for more than three years before being released without charge in January of 2005. His memoir is the first published account by a Guantánamo detainee of life inside the infamous prison. Writing in the Washington Post Book World, Jane Mayer described Enemy Combatant as “fascinating . . . Begg provides some ideological counterweight to the one–sided spin coming from the U.S. government. He writes passionately and personally, stripping readers of the comforting lie that somehow the detainees aren’t really like us, with emotional attachments, intellectual interests and fully developed humanity.” Recommended by the Financial Times and Tikkun magazine and a ColorLines Editors’ Pick of Post–9/11 Books, Enemy Combatant is “a forcefully told, up-to-the-minute political story . . . necessary reading for people on all sides of the issue” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Book excerpt: It was no mystery why I hated Genesis Gusano. She liked to take other people’s things. The bitch stole a pair of my cutest shoes along with my favorite necklace and a school paper I’d written, which had nearly gotten me expelled from Haverick University entirely. But the last straw came when she dared to take the one thing I’d been pining over for two years. Him. I had craved Hudson Ivey in a way I didn’t even know craving was possible, and that was before I’d learned his dang name. He had no idea he’d become a possession that two enemies were warring over. All he wanted to do was graduate with his culinary arts degree and become the best chef possible. But now he’s stuck in Genesis’s sick game until a ghost from his past changes all the rules, possessing him in a whole new, far more dangerous way. I promised myself I was done with the paranormal life. I was determined to be a normal, everyday, average girl. But I can’t just stand aside and watch him be destroyed. So I guess it’s time for a little Faith to step in and save the day.

Book excerpt: As a child, author Wolfgang Schmidt lived through the terror of World War II. In The Enemy’s Child, he chronicles the life of his German naval family from the 1930s through the 1950s. By placing a series of compelling memories within a broader historical context, he narrates the struggles German families faced during and after World War II. Schmidt’s family moved frequently, so this memoir offers a unique glimpse into life in nine wartime cities: Koszalin Pomerania, Kiel, Neustadt Holstein, Gdynia, Berlin, Bad Freienwalde, Göttingen, Eckernförde Schleswig-Holstein, and Buir. It journeys from multiple naval stations on the Baltic Sea to bomb shelters in Berlin and the emergency exodus as the Russian front advanced. Providing insight into family life in Germany during World War II, The Enemy’s Child reveals the challenges of living in the country, contrasting the experiences of four brothers who chose different paths from war to hope, including Schmidt, who decided to make his life in America.
