This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book collects the most relevant results from the INdAM Workshop "Shocks, Singularities and Oscillations in Nonlinear Optics and Fluid Mechanics" held in Rome, September 14-18, 2015. The contributions discuss recent major advances in the study of nonlinear hyperbolic systems, addressing general theoretical issues such as symmetrizability, singularities, low regularity or dispersive perturbations. It also investigates several physical phenomena where such systems are relevant, such as nonlinear optics, shock theory (stability, relaxation) and fluid mechanics (boundary layers, water waves, Euler equations, geophysical flows, etc.). It is a valuable resource for researchers in these fields.
Book Synopsis Geometric Optics for Surface Waves in Nonlinear Elasticity by : Jean-François Coulombel
Download or read book Geometric Optics for Surface Waves in Nonlinear Elasticity written by Jean-François Coulombel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is devoted to the analysis of high frequency solutions to the equations of nonlinear elasticity in a half-space. The authors consider surface waves (or more precisely, Rayleigh waves) arising in the general class of isotropic hyperelastic models, which includes in particular the Saint Venant-Kirchhoff system. Work has been done by a number of authors since the 1980s on the formulation and well-posedness of a nonlinear evolution equation whose (exact) solution gives the leading term of an approximate Rayleigh wave solution to the underlying elasticity equations. This evolution equation, which is referred to as “the amplitude equation”, is an integrodifferential equation of nonlocal Burgers type. The authors begin by reviewing and providing some extensions of the theory of the amplitude equation. The remainder of the paper is devoted to a rigorous proof in 2D that exact, highly oscillatory, Rayleigh wave solutions uε to the nonlinear elasticity equations exist on a fixed time interval independent of the wavelength ε, and that the approximate Rayleigh wave solution provided by the analysis of the amplitude equation is indeed close in a precise sense to uε on a time interval independent of ε. This paper focuses mainly on the case of Rayleigh waves that are pulses, which have profiles with continuous Fourier spectrum, but the authors' method applies equally well to the case of wavetrains, whose Fourier spectrum is discrete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singularities in Fluids, Plasmas and Optics, which contains the proceedings of a NATO Workshop held in Heraklion, Greece, in July 1992, provides a survey of the state of the art in the analysis and computation of singularities in physical problems drawn from fluid mechanics, plasma physics and nonlinear optics. The singularities include curvature singularities on fluid interfaces, the onset of turbulence in 3-D inviscid flows, focusing singularities for laser beams, and magnetic reconnection. The highlights of the book include the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for describing laser beam focusing, the method of complex variables for the analysis and computation of singularities on fluid interfaces, and studies of singularities for the 3-D Euler equations. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in these areas.

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis and Applications—Plenary Lectures written by Luigi G. Rodino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes the texts of the survey lectures given by plenary speakers at the 11th International ISAAC Congress held in Växjö, Sweden, on 14-18 August, 2017. It is the purpose of ISAAC to promote analysis, its applications, and its interaction with computation. Analysis is understood here in the broad sense of the word, including differential equations, integral equations, functional analysis, and function theory. With this objective, ISAAC organizes international Congresses for the presentation and discussion of research on analysis. The plenary lectures in the present volume, authored by eminent specialists, are devoted to some exciting recent developments, topics including: local solvability for subprincipal type operators; fractional-order Laplacians; degenerate complex vector fields in the plane; lower bounds for pseudo-differential operators; a survey on Morrey spaces; localization operators in Signal Theory and Quantum Mechanics. Thanks to the accessible style used, readers only need a basic command of Calculus. This book will appeal to scientists, teachers, and graduate students in Mathematics, in particular Mathematical Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Physics.
Book Synopsis Rogue and Shock Waves in Nonlinear Dispersive Media by : Miguel Onorato
Download or read book Rogue and Shock Waves in Nonlinear Dispersive Media written by Miguel Onorato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This self-contained set of lectures addresses a gap in the literature by providing a systematic link between the theoretical foundations of the subject matter and cutting-edge applications in both geophysical fluid dynamics and nonlinear optics. Rogue and shock waves are phenomena that may occur in the propagation of waves in any nonlinear dispersive medium. Accordingly, they have been observed in disparate settings – as ocean waves, in nonlinear optics, in Bose-Einstein condensates, and in plasmas. Rogue and dispersive shock waves are both characterized by the development of extremes: for the former, the wave amplitude becomes unusually large, while for the latter, gradients reach extreme values. Both aspects strongly influence the statistical properties of the wave propagation and are thus considered together here in terms of their underlying theoretical treatment. This book offers a self-contained graduate-level text intended as both an introduction and reference guide for a new generation of scientists working on rogue and shock wave phenomena across a broad range of fields in applied physics and geophysics.
