Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a convected field of turbulence with a shock wave has been analyzed to yield the modified turbulence, entropy spotiness, and noise generated downstream of the shock. This analysis generalizes the results of Technical Note 2864, which apply to a single spectrum component, to give the shock-interaction effects of a complete turbulence field. The previous report solved the basic gas-dynamic problem, and the present report has added the necessary spectrum analysis.

Book excerpt: The third edition of Engineering Noise Control has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended. Each chapter contains new material, much of which is not available elsewhere. The result is a comprehensive discussion of the theoretical principles and concepts of acoustics and noise control, a detailed discussion of the hearing mechanism, noise measuring instrumentation and techniques, noise criteria, sound source characterization and emission, outdoor sound propagation, sound in rooms, sound transmission through partitions, enclosure design, dissipative and reactive mufflers, vibration isolation, equipment sound power emission calculations and active noise cancellation. The book is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate or graduate students of acoustic and noise control, and it also contains essential information and prediction techniques that make it an invaluable resource for the practitioner.

Book excerpt: The articles in this volume present the state-of-the-art in noise prediction, modeling and measurement. The articles are partially based on class notes provided during the course `Noise sources in turbulent shear flows', given at CISM on April 2011. The first part contains general concepts of aero acoustics, including vortex sound theory and acoustic analogies, in the second part particular emphasis is put into arguments of interest for engineers and relevant for aircraft design: jet noise, airfoil broadband noise, boundary layer noise (including interior noise and its control) and the concept of noise sources, their theoretical modeling and identification in turbulent lows. All these arguments are treated extensively with the inclusion of many practical examples and references to engineering applications.

Book excerpt: The analysis of the sound field generated by the passage of isotropic turbulence through a shock of finite strength (Ribner, 1953, 1954) was extended to provide the flux of acoustic energy. The energy flux varies almost linearly with shock density ratio, reaching a maximum at infinite Mach number of 0.062 of the flux of turbulence kinetic energy. Direct comparison with a result obtained by Lighthill (1953) is misleading. His energy relations, reckoned relative to a frame moving with the fluid, must be converted to the shock-fixed frame used in this report. The converted results of his theory (weak shocks) and the results of the author's theory (arbitrary shocks) appear to show a similar asymptotic behavior for vanishing shock strength; they diverge with increasing shock strength. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truism that turbulence is an unsolved problem, whether in scientific, engin eering or geophysical terms. It is strange that this remains largely the case even though we now know how to solve directly, with the help of sufficiently large and powerful computers, accurate approximations to the equations that govern tur bulent flows. The problem lies not with our numerical approximations but with the size of the computational task and the complexity of the solutions we gen erate, which match the complexity of real turbulence precisely in so far as the computations mimic the real flows. The fact that we can now solve some turbu lence in this limited sense is nevertheless an enormous step towards the goal of full understanding. Direct and large-eddy simulations are these numerical solutions of turbulence. They reproduce with remarkable fidelity the statistical, structural and dynamical properties of physical turbulent and transitional flows, though since the simula tions are necessarily time-dependent and three-dimensional they demand the most advanced computer resources at our disposal. The numerical techniques vary from accurate spectral methods and high-order finite differences to simple finite-volume algorithms derived on the principle of embedding fundamental conservation prop erties in the numerical operations. Genuine direct simulations resolve all the fluid motions fully, and require the highest practical accuracy in their numerical and temporal discretisation. Such simulations have the virtue of great fidelity when carried out carefully, and repre sent a most powerful tool for investigating the processes of transition to turbulence.
