Book excerpt: We have developed a technique for measuring the depth time history of rigid body penetration into brittle materials under a deceleration of 10(exp 5) g. A series of 4140 steel projectile penetrations into 6-mixture mortar targets has been conducted in the velocity range of 100 to 500 m/s. Based on the experimental results, the target materials are damaged via compacting and brittle radial and lateral crack propagation in front of and surrounding the penetration path. The projectile- target contact length on the projectile lateral surface is

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blasting is the predominant rock excavation technique in tunnel/drifts. During blasting, the uncontrolled shock wave movement caused damage to the surrounding rock strata. This results into additional support cost and time over run to complete the project. The available controlled blasting techniques are costly and time consuming and hence not popular. Thus, vibration based damage control technique has more applicability and popular world-wide. This book present the a strong review of the causes of rock damage and the role of its influencing parameters on the extent of rock damage. The mechanism of blast wave propagation and wave properties are also discussed. The controlled blasting techniques proposed by different researchers time to time is also reviewed in details. The newly developed mathametical model for controlling the rock damage based on propagation of blast wave is described which is validated using number of case studies. To predict the extent of rock damage, artificial neural network model is also developed, which may act as an expert system with large number of training data set.

Book excerpt: This book presents a new fracturing technique that should be considered as a potential alternative, or a companion technique, to hydraulic fracturing of tight gas reservoirs and low permeability rock masses. As opposed to hydraulic fracturing which generates a few numbers of large cracks, electro-hydraulic fracturing induces diffuse micro-cracking and fragmentation of rocks. Laboratory tests demonstrate that increases of permeability by two orders of magnitude can be reached, without major cracking in tested specimens. This book discusses the principles of this new technique, reports experiments which have been developed is order to prove the concept and finally describes the numerical model from which the potentialities of this technique in representative reservoir conditions can be assessed.

The process of rock fragmentation by blasting is not well understood yet. Therefore, as a first step, blast-induced dynamic fractures must be studied under highly controlled conditions. The whole cycle of conducting a series of laboratory-scale blast, analyzing the results, and using them to test the validity of an advanced numerical code is reported in this thesis.Initially, the respective contributions by both shock energy and gas energy fractions in an explosive in the blasting process are explained. Then, microstructural, physical and mechanical properties of Laurentian and Barre granites as the selected rock types are investigated.Explosively driven fractures in a blast are controlled by rock and explosive properties, coupling media and coupling ratio. Sample geometries, types of explosives and coupling media used in the experiments are explored in the next step. In order to isolate the effect of shock energy from the gas energy in explosively driven fractures, copper liners were installed in the blast holes to prevent gas penetration into the shock induced cracks. The aim of the experiments was to study exclusively the nature of shock-driven fractures, and to contain the dynamic fractures within the samples and avoid sample fragmentation. At the same time and in order to investigate the stress field as a function of distance from the borehole, pressure gauges were installed in the samples. The measured pressures were used in a numerical-experimental procedure to estimate the attenuation properties of the rocks. Blasted samples were cut and impregnated with a mix of epoxy and fluorescent dye. Next, dynamic fracture patterns were highlighted using a strong ultraviolet source. After taking photographs, fracture patterns were manually mapped and crack densities were calculated at different depths and distances from the boreholes. The parameters that affect the development of dynamic fracture patterns are also discussed and relation between crack densities and pressures applied by explosives are investigated. Finally, the dynamic fracture patterns and measured pressures will be used for calibrating the selected equation of state, strength and failure models implemented in AUTODYN. Governing equations, the procedure for obtaining the model constants, applicability of the selected model for predicting the blast experiments and its limitations are discussed in detail.
